Jacob as a prince had power with God (therefore "Israel"), but because of his lameness had to meet Esau in God’s strength, not his own.
David Simpson [Worcester (UK)] Comment added in 2004 Reply to David
32:24 We have for the better part of our life understood that Jacob and the angel wrestled all night."wrestled until the breaking of day" but, when we go back a few verses we see that that was not the case. We see that Jacob lodged himself on the other side of the ford Jabbok (V.21-22) We are not told when Jacob arose, but it would have been during the night that he and his company moved.

JACOBS GREATEST LESSON (v.22-32)
When Jacob's life gets recorded into the Book of Hebrews, its quite significant that the writer jumps to the end of Jacob's life. "By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshipped as he leaned on the top of his staff." (Heb 11:21)
Hosea describes how Jacob wrestled (Hos 12:4). He did not merely grapple with the angel, refusing to release his hold, but "he wept and made supplication." Prayers and tears were part of his weapons. It was not only a physical, but a spiritual wrestling. Hosea declares: "By his strength" he had power with God (Hos 12:3). But the R.V. changes this to: "in his manhood," and the change is significant. His manhood suggests growth to maturity.
All his life long, Jacob had relied on his own wits and his own ability, but now he had come to a point where he couldn't go it alone any more. The angel had in essence broken his leg and now Jacob had to lean upon his staff - or better said, he had to lean upon God's help.
What a tremendous lesson we have here. It's not until we reach our own "Peniel", our own point of extremity, that we learn to lean upon God. Its when we realize that we can't go it alone, and it's then that we become the kind of person that God wants. Let us learn this lesson by the example of Jacob's life.

Gen 32:1-2 As Jacob journeyed South to the land of promise he met the angels of God and named the place Mahanaim. (<4266>, two hosts or two camps). We see God was faithful to the promises he made to Abraham was with Jacob as he journeyed.
We should travel in faith through life seeking the kingdom of God trusting that the angels of the Lord encamp around us.
David recognised there were two camps and was delivered from his troubles and was able to say, “This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”(Psa 34:6-7)
Jesus knew this messianic Psalm and knew the angels of the Lord camped around him. There were the rulers hostile to him on the one hand but on the other, his friends the disciples and 12 legions of angels who could have delivered him, (Matt 26:53). Jesus was obedient to his Father's and an angel of the Lord appeared in Gethsemane to strengthen him for what was before him (Luke 22:43) and so God’s will was done.

1. And Jacob <3290> went <1980>(8804) on his way <1870>, and the angels <4397> of God <430> met <6293>(8799) him.
2. And when Jacob <3290> saw them <7200>(8804), he said <559>(8799), This is God's <430> host <4264>: and he called <7121>(8799) the name <8034> of that place <4725> Mahanaim <4266>.
3. And Jacob <3290> sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> before him <6440> to Esau <6215> his brother <251> unto the land <776> of Seir <8165>, the country <7704> of Edom <123>.
4. And he commanded <6680>(8762) them, saying <559>(8800), Thus shall ye speak <559>(8799) unto my lord <113> Esau <6215>; Thy servant <5650> Jacob <3290> saith <559>(8804) thus, I have sojourned <1481>(8804) with Laban <3837>, and stayed there <309>(8799) until now:
5. And I have oxen <7794>, and asses <2543>, flocks <6629>, and menservants <5650>, and womenservants <8198>: and I have sent <7971>(8799) to tell <5046>(8687) my lord <113>, that I may find <4672>(8800) grace <2580> in thy sight <5869>.
6. And the messengers <4397> returned <7725>(8799) to Jacob <3290>, saying <559>(8800), We came <935>(8804) to thy brother <251> Esau <6215>, and also he cometh <1980>(8802) to meet thee <7125>(8800), and four hundred <3967> men <376> with him.
7. Then Jacob <3290> was greatly <3966> afraid <3372>(8799) and distressed <3334>(8799): and he divided <2673>(8799) the people <5971> that was with him, and the flocks <6629>, and herds <1241>, and the camels <1581>, into two <8147> bands <4264>;
8. And said <559>(8799), If Esau <6215> come <935>(8799) to the one <259> company <4264>, and smite it <5221>(8689), then the other company <4264> which is left <7604>(8737) shall escape <6413>.
9. And Jacob <3290> said <559>(8799), O God <430> of my father <1> Abraham <85>, and God <430> of my father <1> Isaac <3327>, the LORD <3068> which saidst <559>(8802) unto me, Return <7725>(8798) unto thy country <776>, and to thy kindred <4138>, and I will deal well <3190>(8686) with thee:
10. I am not worthy of the least <6994>(8804) of all the mercies <2617>, and of all the truth <571>, which thou hast shewed <6213>(8804) unto thy servant <5650>; for with my staff <4731> I passed over <5674>(8804) this Jordan <3383>; and now I am become two <8147> bands <4264>.
11. Deliver me <5337>(8685), I pray thee, from the hand <3027> of my brother <251>, from the hand <3027> of Esau <6215>: for I fear <3373> him, lest he will come <935>(8799) and smite me <5221>(8689), and the mother <517> with <5921> the children <1121>.
12. And thou saidst <559>(8804), I will surely <3190>(8687) do thee good <3190>(8686), and make <7760>(8804) thy seed <2233> as the sand <2344> of the sea <3220>, which cannot be numbered <5608>(8735) for multitude <7230>.
13. And he lodged <3885>(8799) there that same night <3915>; and took <3947>(8799) of that which came <935>(8802) to his hand <3027> a present <4503> for Esau <6215> his brother <251>;
14. Two hundred <3967> she goats <5795>, and twenty <6242> he goats <8495>, two hundred <3967> ewes <7353>, and twenty <6242> rams <352>,
15. Thirty <7970> milch <3243>(8688) camels <1581> with their colts <1121>, forty <705> kine <6510>, and ten <6235> bulls <6499>, twenty <6242> she asses <860>, and ten <6235> foals <5895>.
16. And he delivered <5414>(8799) them into the hand <3027> of his servants <5650>, every drove <5739> by themselves; and said <559>(8799) unto his servants <5650>, Pass over <5674>(8798) before me <6440>, and put <7760>(8799) a space <7305> betwixt <996> drove <5739> and <996> drove <5739>.
17. And he commanded <6680>(8762) the foremost <7223>, saying <559>(8800), When Esau <6215> my brother <251> meeteth thee <6298>(8799), and asketh thee <7592>(8804), saying <559>(8800), Whose art thou? and whither goest <3212>(8799) thou? and whose are these before <6440> thee?
18. Then thou shalt say <559>(8804), They be thy servant <5650> Jacob's <3290>; it is a present <4503> sent <7971>(8803) unto my lord <113> Esau <6215>: and, behold, also he is behind us <310>.
19. And so <1571> commanded he <6680>(8762) the second <8145>, and the third <7992>, and all that followed <1980>(8802) <310> the droves <5739>, saying <559>(8800), On this manner <1697> shall ye speak <1696>(8762) unto Esau <6215>, when ye find <4672>(8800) him.
20. And say ye <559>(8804) moreover <1571>, Behold, thy servant <5650> Jacob <3290> is behind us <310>. For he said <559>(8804), I will appease <3722>(8762) him <6440> with the present <4503> that goeth <1980>(8802) before me <6440>, and afterward <310> I will see <7200>(8799) his face <6440>; peradventure he will accept <5375>(8799) of me <6440>.
21. So went <5674> <0> the present <4503> over <5674>(8799) before him <6440>: and himself lodged <3885>(8804) that night <3915> in the company <4264>.
22. And he rose up <6965>(8799) that night <3915>, and took <3947>(8799) his two <8147> wives <802>, and his two <8147> womenservants <8198>, and his eleven <6240> <259> sons <3206>, and passed over <5674>(8799) the ford <4569> Jabbok <2999>.
23. And he took them <3947>(8799), and sent them over <5674>(8686) the brook <5158>, and sent over <5674>(8686) that he had.
24. And Jacob <3290> was left <3498>(8735) alone; and there wrestled <79>(8735) a man <376> with him until the breaking <5927>(8800) of the day <7837>.
25. And when he saw <7200>(8799) that he prevailed <3201>(8804) not against him, he touched <5060>(8799) the hollow of his thigh <3409>; and the hollow <3709> of Jacob's <3290> thigh <3409> was out of joint <3363>(8799), as he wrestled <79>(8736) with him.
26. And he said <559>(8799), Let me go <7971>(8761), for the day <7837> breaketh <5927>(8804). And he said <559>(8799), I will not let thee go <7971>(8762), except <518> thou bless <1288>(8765) me.
27. And he said <559>(8799) unto him, What is thy name <8034>? And he said <559>(8799), Jacob <3290>.
28. And he said <559>(8799), Thy name <8034> shall be called <559>(8735) no more Jacob <3290>, but Israel <3478>: for as a prince hast thou power <8280>(8804) with God <430> and with men <582>, and hast prevailed <3201>(8799).
29. And Jacob <3290> asked <7592>(8799) him, and said <559>(8799), Tell <5046>(8685) me, I pray thee, thy name <8034>. And he said <559>(8799), Wherefore is it <2088> that thou dost ask <7592>(8799) after my name <8034>? And he blessed <1288>(8762) him there.
30. And Jacob <3290> called <7121>(8799) the name <8034> of the place <4725> Peniel <6439>: for I have seen <7200>(8804) God <430> face <6440> to face <6440>, and my life <5315> is preserved <5337>(8735).
31. And as he passed over <5674>(8804) Penuel <6439> the sun <8121> rose <2224>(8799) upon him, and he halted <6760>(8802) upon his thigh <3409>.
32. Therefore the children <1121> of Israel <3478> eat <398>(8799) not of the sinew <1517> which shrank <5384>, which is upon the hollow <3709> of the thigh <3409>, unto this day <3117>: because he touched <5060>(8804) the hollow <3709> of Jacob's <3290> thigh <3409> in the sinew <1517> that shrank <5384>.
1. And Jacob <3290> lifted up <5375>(8799) his eyes <5869>, and looked <7200>(8799), and, behold, Esau <6215> came <935>(8802), and with him four <702> hundred <3967> men <376>. And he divided <2673>(8799) the children <3206> unto Leah <3812>, and unto Rachel <7354>, and unto the two <8147> handmaids <8198>.
2. And he put <7760>(8799) the handmaids <8198> and their children <3206> foremost <7223>, and Leah <3812> and her children <3206> after <314>, and Rachel <7354> and Joseph <3130> hindermost <314>.
3. And he passed over <5674>(8804) before them <6440>, and bowed himself <7812>(8691) to the ground <776> seven <7651> times <6471>, until he came near <5066>(8800) to his brother <251>.
4. And Esau <6215> ran <7323>(8799) to meet him <7125>(8800), and embraced <2263>(8762) him, and fell <5307>(8799) on his neck <6677>, and kissed him <5401>(8799): and they wept <1058>(8799).
5. And he lifted up <5375>(8799) his eyes <5869>, and saw <7200>(8799) the women <802> and the children <3206>; and said <559>(8799), Who are those <428> with thee? And he said <559>(8799), The children <3206> which God <430> hath graciously given <2603>(8804) thy servant <5650>.
6. Then the handmaidens <8198> came near <5066>(8799), they and their children <3206>, and they bowed themselves <7812>(8691).
7. And Leah <3812> also with her children <3206> came near <5066>(8799), and bowed themselves <7812>(8691): and after <310> came <5066> <0> Joseph <3130> near <5066>(8738) and Rachel <7354>, and they bowed <7812>(8691) themselves.
8. And he said <559>(8799), What meanest thou by all this drove <4264> which I met <6298>(8804)? And he said <559>(8799), These are to find <4672>(8800) grace <2580> in the sight <5869> of my lord <113>.
9. And Esau <6215> said <559>(8799), I have <3426> enough <7227>, my brother <251>; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
10. And Jacob <3290> said <559>(8799), Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found <4672>(8804) grace <2580> in thy sight <5869>, then receive <3947>(8804) my present <4503> at my hand <3027>: for therefore I have seen <7200>(8804) thy face <6440>, as though I had seen <7200>(8800) the face <6440> of God <430>, and thou wast pleased with me <7521>(8799).
11. Take <3947>(8798), I pray thee, my blessing <1293> that is brought <935>(8717) to thee; because God <430> hath dealt graciously with me <2603>(8804), and because <3605> <0> I have <3426> enough <3605>. And he urged <6484>(8799) him, and he took <3947>(8799) it.
12. And he said <559>(8799), Let us take our journey <5265>(8799), and let us go <3212>(8799), and I will go <3212>(8799) before thee.
13. And he said <559>(8799) unto him, My lord <113> knoweth <3045>(8802) that the children <3206> are tender <7390>, and the flocks <6629> and herds <1241> with young <5763>(8802) are with me: and if men should overdrive <1849>(8804) them one <259> day <3117>, all the flock <6629> will die <4191>(8804).
14. Let my lord <113>, I pray thee, pass over <5674>(8799) before <6440> his servant <5650>: and I will lead on <5095>(8691) softly <328>, according as <7272> the cattle <4399> that goeth before me <6440> and the children <3206> be able to endure <7272>, until I come <935>(8799) unto my lord <113> unto Seir <8165>.
15. And Esau <6215> said <559>(8799), Let me now leave <3322>(8686) with thee some of the folk <5971> that are with me. And he said <559>(8799), What <4100> needeth it? let me find <4672>(8799) grace <2580> in the sight <5869> of my lord <113>.
16. So Esau <6215> returned <7725>(8799) that day <3117> on his way <1870> unto Seir <8165>.
17. And Jacob <3290> journeyed <5265>(8804) to Succoth <5523>, and built <1129>(8799) him an house <1004>, and made <6213>(8804) booths <5521> for his cattle <4735>: therefore the name <8034> of the place <4725> is called <7121>(8804) Succoth <5523>.
18. And Jacob <3290> came <935>(8799) to Shalem <8004>, a city <5892> of Shechem <7927>, which is in the land <776> of Canaan <3667>, when he came <935>(8800) from Padanaram <6307>; and pitched his tent <2583>(8799) before <6440> the city <5892>.
19. And he bought <7069>(8799) a parcel <2513> of a field <7704>, where he had spread <5186>(8804) his tent <168>, at the hand <3027> of the children <1121> of Hamor <2544>, Shechem's <7927> father <1>, for an hundred <3967> pieces of money <7192>.
20. And he erected <5324>(8686) there an altar <4196>, and called it <7121>(8799) Elelohe-Israel <415>.

Psalm 36 In this Psalm, David provides us with a description of a wicked man, which he contrasts with the righteous attributes of God.

36:4 conjures up a picture of someone too lazy even to rise from his bed, so he lies there "devising mischief." Alternatively, is it a picture of someone who puts so much effort into "devising mischief" that he has no time for sleep? Prov 4:16

36 title. The next time we read of “the servant of the Lord” it is in 2Tim 2:24 where the qualities of a servant are laid out.
Peter Forbes [Mountsorrel (UK)] Comment added in 2015 Reply to Peter
36 The title. In describing himself as “servant of the Lord” David likens himself to Moses – Deut 34:5. This is not a boastful claim. Rather it is an acknowledgement that Moses was a good example to follow. Even though king David realised his status was that of a lowly servant.

2. For he flattereth <2505>(8689) himself in his own eyes <5869>, until his iniquity <5771> be found <4672>(8800) to be hateful <8130>(8800).
3. The words <1697> of his mouth <6310> are iniquity <205> and deceit <4820>: he hath left off <2308>(8804) to be wise <7919>(8687), and to do good <3190>(8687).

5. Thy mercy <2617>, O LORD <3068>, is in the heavens <8064>; and thy faithfulness <530> reacheth unto the clouds <7834>.
6. Thy righteousness <6666> is like the great <410> mountains <2042>; thy judgments <4941> are a great <7227> deep <8415>: O LORD <3068>, thou preservest <3467>(8686) man <120> and beast <929>.
7. How excellent <3368> is thy lovingkindness <2617>, O God <430>! therefore the children <1121> of men <120> put their trust <2620>(8799) under the shadow <6738> of thy wings <3671>.

THE ONE WE LOOK FOR
As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, there were many who saw him as their king. They believed he was the One they were looking for. They saw in him a King, they saw him fulfilling scripture, healing the sick, lame, blind and deaf, and feeding the hungry. To those people, for now, he was their man. They had lined the streets shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" and, "Hosanna in the highest!"
But at the same time there were others for whom Jesus didn't fit in their mould as Messiah. Jesus kept criticising the religious leaders, he hadn't led a revolt against the Romans, and it seemed as if everywhere he went he caused trouble. They were the ones that put him down at every opportunity, ridiculed him, and tried to kill him.
Jesus was the same person to both those groups of people, but the big difference was in what they expected him to be like and what they thought he should do. When it came for the time for Jesus to be crucified and to die, no one expected it to happen because it did not fit into anyone's picture of the Messiah, even though the prophets had spoken about it.
Jesus will return again. As it was prophesied about his life, so it is prophesied about his return. Will he be the one that we look for? Are we familiar enough with what is written to expect and recognise our Messiah when he comes?

Vs.13,14 This incident occurred five days before Jesus was crucified, at the end of March. Summer was the time for figs (Matt 24:32).
Jesus' expectation of the fig tree, and His subsequent curse on it, might seem unreasonable. Although it was not the season for figs, He singled out this (abnormal) tree full of leaves. As the fruit of a fig tree always precedes the leaves, it was reasonable to expect that there would be fruit. But there was none.
And so, the fig tree was cursed, and would no longer bear any fruit. Of course, this whole episode was an enacted parable to show the state of Jewish spirituality. Judaism presented a great outward display but lacked the fulfilling Truth that Jesus brought.
And so, Israel (fig tree) bore no spiritual truth (figs), but had a grand outward show (leaves). Yahweh singled out Israel with the expectation that this nation would accept His Truth. Having rejected the Truth that Jesus represented, the nation was cursed, just as the fig tree was cursed. In 70 AD, punishment was administered for the rejection of Jesus and the Truth.
This parable is also a reminder that we should always be ready to serve (2Tim 4:2).

1. And <2532> when <3753> they drew nigh <1448>(5656) unto <1519> Jerusalem <2414>, and <2532> were come <2064>(5627) to <1519> Bethphage <967>, unto <4314> the mount <3735> of Olives <1636>, then <5119> sent <649>(5656) Jesus <2424> two <1417> disciples <3101>,
2. Saying <3004>(5723) unto them <846>, Go <4198>(5680) into <1519> the village <2968> over against <561> you <5216>, and <2532> straightway <2112> ye shall find <2147>(5692) an ass <3688> tied <1210>(5772), and <2532> a colt <4454> with <3326> her <846>: loose <3089>(5660) them, and bring <71>(5628) them unto me <3427>.
3. And <2532> if <1437> any man <5100> say <2036>(5632) ought <5100> unto you <5213>, ye shall say <2046>(5692), <3754> The Lord <2962> hath <2192>(5719) need <5532> of them <846>; and <1161> straightway <2112> he will send <649>(5692) them <846>.
4. All <1161> <3650> this <5124> was done <1096>(5754), that <2443> it might be fulfilled <4137>(5686) which <3588> was spoken <4483>(5685) by <1223> the prophet <4396>, saying <3004>(5723),
5. Tell ye <2036>(5628) the daughter <2364> of Sion <4622>, Behold <2400>(5628), thy <4675> King <935> cometh <2064>(5736) unto thee <4671>, meek <4239>, and <2532> sitting <1910>(5761) upon <1909> an ass <3688>, and <2532> a colt <4454> the foal <5207> of an ass <5268>.
6. And <1161> the disciples <3101> went <4198>(5679), and <2532> did <4160>(5660) as <2531> Jesus <2424> commanded <4367>(5656) them <846>,
7. And brought <71>(5627) the ass <3688>, and <2532> the colt <4454>, and <2532> put <2007>(5656) on <1883> them <846> their <848> clothes <2440>, and <2532> they set <1940>(5656)(5625) <1940>(5656) him thereon <1883> <846>.
8. And <1161> a very great <4118> multitude <3793> spread <4766>(5656) their <1438> garments <2440> in <1722> the way <3598>; others <1161> <243> cut down <2875>(5707) branches <2798> from <575> the trees <1186>, and <2532> strawed <4766>(5707) them in <1722> the way <3598>.
9. And <1161> the multitudes <3793> that went before <4254>(5723), and <2532> that followed <190>(5723), cried <2896>(5707), saying <3004>(5723), Hosanna <5614> to the Son <5207> of David <1138>: Blessed <2127>(5772) is he that cometh <2064>(5740) in <1722> the name <3686> of the Lord <2962>; Hosanna <5614> in <1722> the highest <5310>.
10. And <2532> when he was come <1525>(5631) into <1519> Jerusalem <2414>, all <3956> the city <4172> was moved <4579>(5681), saying <3004>(5723), Who <5101> is <2076>(5748) this <3778>?
11. And <1161> the multitude <3793> said <3004>(5707), This <3778> is <2076>(5748) Jesus <2424> the prophet <4396> of <575> Nazareth <3478> of Galilee <1056>.
12. And <2532> Jesus <2424> went <1525>(5627) into <1519> the temple <2411> of God <2316>, and <2532> cast out <1544>(5627) all them <3956> that sold <4453>(5723) and <2532> bought <59>(5723) in <1722> the temple <2411>, and <2532> overthrew <2690>(5656) the tables <5132> of the moneychangers <2855>, and <2532> the seats <2515> of them that sold <4453>(5723) doves <4058>,
13. And <2532> said <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, It is written <1125>(5769), My <3450> house <3624> shall be called <2564>(5701) the house <3624> of prayer <4335>; but <1161> ye <5210> have made <4160>(5656) it a den <4693> of thieves <3027>.
14. And <2532> the blind <5185> and <2532> the lame <5560> came <4334>(5656) to him <846> in <1722> the temple <2411>; and <2532> he healed <2323>(5656) them <846>.
15. And <1161> when the chief priests <749> and <2532> scribes <1122> saw <1492>(5631) the wonderful things <2297> that <3739> he did <4160>(5656), and <2532> the children <3816> crying <2896>(5723) in <1722> the temple <2411>, and <2532> saying <3004>(5723), Hosanna <5614> to the Son <5207> of David <1138>; they were sore displeased <23>(5656),
16. And <2532> said <2036>(5627) unto him <846>, Hearest thou <191>(5719) what <5101> these <3778> say <3004>(5719)? And <1161> Jesus <2424> saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Yea <3483>; have ye never <3763> read <314>(5627), <3754> Out of <1537> the mouth <4750> of babes <3516> and <2532> sucklings <2337>(5723) thou hast perfected <2675>(5668) praise <136>?
17. And <2532> he left <2641>(5631) them <846>, and went <1831>(5627) out of <1854> the city <4172> into <1519> Bethany <963>; and <2532> he lodged <835>(5675) there <1563>.
18. Now <1161> in the morning <4405> as he returned <1877>(5723) into <1519> the city <4172>, he hungered <3983>(5656).
19. And <2532> when he saw <1492>(5631) a <3391> fig tree <4808> in <1909> the way <3598>, he came <2064>(5627) to <1909> it <846>, and <2532> found <2147>(5627) nothing <3762> thereon <1722> <846>, but <1508> leaves <5444> only <3440>, and <2532> said <3004>(5719) unto it <846>, Let no <1096> <0> fruit <2590> grow <1096>(5638) on <1537> thee <4675> henceforward <3371> for <1519> ever <165>. And <2532> presently <3916> the fig tree <4808> withered away <3583>(5681).
20. And <2532> when the disciples <3101> saw <1492>(5631) it, they marvelled <2296>(5656), saying <3004>(5723), How <4459> soon <3916> is the fig tree <4808> withered away <3583>(5681)!
21. Jesus <2424> answered <611>(5679) and <1161> said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Verily <281> I say <3004>(5719) unto you <5213>, If <1437> ye have <2192>(5725) faith <4102>, and <2532> doubt <1252>(5686) not <3361>, ye shall <4160> <0> not <3756> only <3440> <0> do <4160>(5692) this <3440> which is done to the fig tree <4808>, but <235> also if <2579> ye shall say <2036>(5632) unto this <5129> mountain <3735>, Be thou removed <142>(5682), and <2532> be thou cast <906>(5682) into <1519> the sea <2281>; it shall be done <1096>(5695).
22. And <2532> all things <3956>, whatsoever <302> <3745> ye shall ask <154>(5661) in <1722> prayer <4335>, believing <4100>(5723), ye shall receive <2983>(5695).
23. And <2532> when he was come <2064>(5631) into <1519> the temple <2411>, the chief priests <749> and <2532> the elders <4245> of the people <2992> came <4334>(5656) unto him <846> as he was teaching <1321>(5723), and said <3004>(5723), By <1722> what <4169> authority <1849> doest thou <4160>(5719) these things <5023>? and <2532> who <5101> gave <1325>(5656) thee <4671> this <5026> authority <1849>?
24. And <1161> Jesus <2424> answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, I also <2504> will ask <2065>(5692) you <5209> one <1520> thing <3056>, which <3739> if <1437> ye tell <2036>(5632) me <3427>, I in like wise <2504> will tell <2046>(5692) you <5213> by <1722> what <4169> authority <1849> I do <4160>(5719) these things <5023>.
25. The baptism <908> of John <2491>, whence <4159> was it <2258>(5713)? from <1537> heaven <3772>, or <2228> of <1537> men <444>? And <1161> they reasoned <1260>(5711) with <3844> themselves <1438>, saying <3004>(5723), If <1437> we shall say <2036>(5632), From <1537> heaven <3772>; he will say <2046>(5692) unto us <2254>, Why <1302> did ye <4100> <0> not <3756> then <3767> believe <4100>(5656) him <846>?
26. But <1161> if <1437> we shall say <2036>(5632), Of <1537> men <444>; we fear <5399>(5736) the people <3793>; for <1063> all <3956> hold <2192>(5719) John <2491> as <5613> a prophet <4396>.
27. And <2532> they answered <611>(5679) Jesus <2424>, and said <2036>(5627), We cannot <3756> tell <1492>(5758). And <2532> he said <5346>(5713) unto them <846>, Neither <3761> tell <3004>(5719) I <1473> you <5213> by <1722> what <4169> authority <1849> I do <4160>(5719) these things <5023>.
28. But <1161> what <5101> think <1380>(5719) ye <5213>? A certain man <444> had <2192>(5707) two <1417> sons <5043>; and <2532> he came <4334>(5631) to the first <4413>, and said <2036>(5627), Son <5043>, go <5217>(5720) work <2038>(5737) to day <4594> in <1722> my <3450> vineyard <290>.
29. He answered <1161> <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), I will <2309>(5719) not <3756>: but <1161> afterward <5305> he repented <3338>(5679), and went <565>(5627).
30. And <2532> he came <4334>(5631) to the second <1208>, and said <2036>(5627) likewise <5615>. And <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), I <1473> go, sir <2962>: and <2532> went <565>(5627) not <3756>.
31. Whether <5101> of <1537> them twain <1417> did <4160>(5656) the will <2307> of his father <3962>? They say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, The first <4413>. Jesus <2424> saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Verily <281> I say <3004>(5719) unto you <5213>, That <3754> the publicans <5057> and <2532> the harlots <4204> go <4254> <0> into <1519> the kingdom <932> of God <2316> before <4254>(5719) you <5209>.
32. For <1063> John <2491> came <2064>(5627) unto <4314> you <5209> in <1722> the way <3598> of righteousness <1343>, and <2532> ye believed <4100>(5656) him <846> not <3756>: but <1161> the publicans <5057> and <2532> the harlots <4204> believed <4100>(5656) him <846>: and <1161> ye <5210>, when ye had seen <1492>(5631) it, repented <3338>(5675) not <3756> afterward <5305>, that ye might believe <4100>(5658) him <846>.
33. Hear <191>(5657) another <243> parable <3850>: There was <2258>(5713) a certain <444> <5100> householder <3617>, which <3748> planted <5452>(5656) a vineyard <290>, and <2532> hedged <5418> it <846> round about <4060>(5656), and <2532> digged <3736>(5656) a winepress <3025> in <1722> it <846>, and <2532> built <3618>(5656) a tower <4444>, and <2532> let <1554> <0> it <846> out <1554>(5639) to husbandmen <1092>, and <2532> went into a far country <589>(5656):
34. And <1161> when <3753> the time <2540> of the fruit <2590> drew near <1448>(5656), he sent <649>(5656) his <848> servants <1401> to <4314> the husbandmen <1092>, that they might receive <2983>(5629) the fruits <2590> of it <846>.
35. And <2532> the husbandmen <1092> took <2983>(5631) his <846> servants <1401>, and beat <1194>(5656) one <3739>, <3303> and <1161> killed <615>(5656) another <3739>, and <1161> stoned <3036>(5681) another <3739>.
36. Again <3825>, he sent <649>(5656) other <243> servants <1401> more <4119> than the first <4413>: and <2532> they did <4160>(5656) unto them <846> likewise <5615>.
37. But <1161> last of all <5305> he sent <649>(5656) unto <4314> them <846> his <848> son <5207>, saying <3004>(5723), They will reverence <1788>(5691) my <3450> son <5207>.
38. But <1161> when the husbandmen <1092> saw <1492>(5631) the son <5207>, they said <2036>(5627) among <1722> themselves <1438>, This <3778> is <2076>(5748) the heir <2818>; come <1205>(5773), let us kill <615>(5725) him <846>, and <2532> let us seize <2722>(5632) on his <846> inheritance <2817>.
39. And <2532> they caught <2983>(5631) him <846>, and cast <1544>(5627) him out of <1854> the vineyard <290>, and <2532> slew <615>(5656) him.
40. When <3752> the lord <2962> therefore <3767> of the vineyard <290> cometh <2064>(5632), what <5101> will he do <4160>(5692) unto those <1565> husbandmen <1092>?
41. They say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, He will miserably <2560> destroy <622>(5692) those <846> wicked men <2556>, and <2532> will let out <1554>(5695) his vineyard <290> unto other <243> husbandmen <1092>, which <3748> shall render <591>(5692) him <846> the fruits <2590> in <1722> their <846> seasons <2540>.
42. Jesus <2424> saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Did ye <314> <0> never <3763> read <314>(5627) in <1722> the scriptures <1124>, The stone <3037> which <3739> the builders <3618>(5723) rejected <593>(5656), the same <3778> is become <1096>(5675) <1519> the head <2776> of the corner <1137>: this <3778> is <3844> the Lord's <2962> doing <1096>(5633), and <2532> it is <2076>(5748) marvellous <2298> in <1722> our <2257> eyes <3788>?
43. Therefore <1223> <5124> say I <3004>(5719) unto you <5213>, <3754> The kingdom <932> of God <2316> shall be taken <142>(5701) from <575> you <5216>, and <2532> given <1325>(5701) to a nation <1484> bringing forth <4160>(5723) the fruits <2590> thereof <846>.
44. And <2532> whosoever shall fall <4098>(5631) on <1909> this <5126> stone <3037> shall be broken <4917>(5701): but <1161> on <1909> whomsoever <302> it shall fall <4098>(5632), it will grind <3039> <0> him <846> to powder <3039>(5692).
45. And <2532> when the chief priests <749> and <2532> Pharisees <5330> had heard <191>(5660) his parables <3850>, they perceived <1097>(5627) that <3754> he spake <3004>(5719) of <4012> them <846>.
46. But <2532> when they sought <2212>(5723) to lay hands <2902>(5658) on him <846>, they feared <5399>(5675) the multitude <3793>, because <1894> they took <2192>(5707) him <846> for <5613> a prophet <4396>.
