ch 34 - The whole incident of Dinah and Shechem is most unpleasant. It highlights the dangers of investigating what the world has to offer. The behaviour of Simeon and Levi is appalling also.. It seems that Shechem had, by the world's standards, high principles. Of course this would not justify Dinah marrying him. From the way that the men of the land speak it is clear to see how the 'world' thinks - it is self seeking.
ch 35 - Jacob owned a parcel of ground at Shechem - Abraham had bought it. So the gold was buried on his own land.

v 1.Dinah went window shopping. She went to see what the local girls were doing. But it was probably her naivety which led to her being raped by the prince. What a lesson for us parents, and Sunday School teachers. We must always prepare our youngsters for facing the world. Perhaps her parents had been too involved with the boys’ upbringing, and had not forewarned Dinah. The dreadful consequences of this unhappy event led to many lives being lost, and to the harsh sentence of Jacob inGen 49:5-7.

Dinah has the same root as Dan. Dan means judge and Dinah means justice. Dinah would have been 14 or 15 years old at this time. Curiosity of life overcame her and she had to see what was out there. We know what happened, of course, but it would be interesting to wonder what went wrong. Was it a case of immaturity, naïveté, lack of values or guidance, or a combination? We don't know, but the incident should prompt us to street proof our youngsters against the present evil world.

Gen 35:28 The record states that Isaac died at the age of 180yrs of age. When Isaac was 60yrs old Jacob and Esau were born to him and Rebekah (Gen 25:26). So for the remaining 120 years of Isaac’s life (180-60=120) Isaac was aware of the birth of the 12 sons to Jacob. So Jacob was 120 years old then his father Isaac died. Therefore there were only 10 years between the death of Isaac and Jacob’s 130thyear when he met Pharaoh (Gen 47:9).
It appears therefore that the events in life of Joseph in the court of Pharaoh (Gen 41:46 to Gen 47:9) took place within a period of 10 years?

7. And the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290> came <935>(8804) out of the field <7704> when they heard <8085>(8800) it: and the men <582> were grieved <6087>(8691), and they were very <3966> wroth <2734>(8799), because he had wrought <6213>(8804) folly <5039> in Israel <3478> in lying <7901>(8800) with Jacob's <3290> daughter <1323>; which thing ought not to be done <6213>(8735).
8. And Hamor <2544> communed <1696>(8762) with them, saying <559>(8800), The soul <5315> of my son <1121> Shechem <7927> longeth <2836>(8804) for your daughter <1323>: I pray you give <5414>(8798) her him to wife <802>.
9. And make ye marriages <2859>(8690) with us, and give <5414>(8799) your daughters <1323> unto us, and take <3947>(8799) our daughters <1323> unto you.
10. And ye shall dwell <3427>(8799) with us: and the land <776> shall be <1961>(8799) before you <6440>; dwell <3427>(8798) and trade <5503>(8804) ye therein, and get you possessions <270>(8734) therein.
11. And Shechem <7927> said <559>(8799) unto her father <1> and unto her brethren <251>, Let me find <4672>(8799) grace <2580> in your eyes <5869>, and what ye shall say <559>(8799) unto me I will give <5414>(8799).
12. Ask <7235>(8685) me never so much <3966> dowry <4119> and gift <4976>, and I will give <5414>(8799) according as ye shall say <559>(8799) unto me: but give <5414>(8798) me the damsel <5291> to wife <802>.
13. And the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290> answered <6030>(8799) Shechem <7927> and Hamor <2544> his father <1> deceitfully <4820>, and said <1696>(8762), because he had defiled <2930>(8765) Dinah <1783> their sister <269>:
14. And they said <559>(8799) unto them, We cannot <3808> <3201>(8799) do <6213>(8800) this thing <1697>, to give <5414>(8800) our sister <269> to one <376> that is uncircumcised <6190>; for that were a reproach <2781> unto us:
15. But in this <2063> will we consent <225>(8735) unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male <2145> of you be circumcised <4135>(8736);
16. Then will we give <5414>(8804) our daughters <1323> unto you, and we will take <3947>(8799) your daughters <1323> to us, and we will dwell <3427>(8804) with you, and we will become one <259> people <5971>.
17. But if ye will not hearken <8085>(8799) unto us, to be circumcised <4135>(8736); then will we take <3947>(8804) our daughter <1323>, and we will be gone <1980>(8804).
18. And their words <1697> pleased <3190>(8799) <5869> Hamor <2544>, and Shechem <7927> Hamor's <2544> son <1121>.
19. And the young man <5288> deferred <309>(8765) not to do <6213>(8800) the thing <1697>, because he had delight <2654>(8804) in Jacob's <3290> daughter <1323>: and he was more honourable <3513>(8737) than all the house <1004> of his father <1>.
20. And Hamor <2544> and Shechem <7927> his son <1121> came <935>(8799) unto the gate <8179> of their city <5892>, and communed <1696>(8762) with the men <582> of their city <5892>, saying <559>(8800),
21. These men <582> are peaceable <8003> with <854> us; therefore let them dwell <3427>(8799) in the land <776>, and trade <5503>(8799) therein; for the land <776>, behold, it is large <7342> enough <3027> for them <6440>; let us take <3947>(8799) their daughters <1323> to us for wives <802>, and let us give <5414>(8799) them our daughters <1323>.
22. Only herein <2063> will the men <582> consent <225>(8735) unto us for to dwell <3427>(8800) with us, to be one <259> people <5971>, if every male <2145> among us be circumcised <4135>(8736), as they are circumcised <4135>(8737).
23. Shall not their cattle <4735> and their substance <7075> and every beast <929> of theirs be ours? only let us consent <225>(8735) unto them, and they will dwell <3427>(8799) with us.
24. And unto Hamor <2544> and unto Shechem <7927> his son <1121> hearkened <8085>(8799) all that went out <3318>(8802) of the gate <8179> of his city <5892>; and every male <2145> was circumcised <4135>(8735), all that went out <3318>(8802) of the gate <8179> of his city <5892>.
25. And it came to pass on the third <7992> day <3117>, when they were sore <3510>(8802), that two <8147> of the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290>, Simeon <8095> and Levi <3878>, Dinah's <1783> brethren <251>, took <3947>(8799) each man <376> his sword <2719>, and came <935>(8799) upon the city <5892> boldly <983>, and slew <2026>(8799) all the males <2145>.
26. And they slew <2026>(8804) Hamor <2544> and Shechem <7927> his son <1121> with the edge <6310> of the sword <2719>, and took <3947> <0> Dinah <1783> out <3947>(8799) of Shechem's <7927> house <1004>, and went out <3318>(8799).
27. The sons <1121> of Jacob <3290> came <935>(8804) upon the slain <2491>, and spoiled <962>(8799) the city <5892>, because they had defiled <2930>(8765) their sister <269>.
28. They took <3947>(8804) their sheep <6629>, and their oxen <1241>, and their asses <2543>, and that which was in the city <5892>, and that which was in the field <7704>,
29. And all their wealth <2428>, and all their little ones <2945>, and their wives <802> took they captive <7617>(8804), and spoiled <962>(8799) even all that was in the house <1004>.
30. And Jacob <3290> said <559>(8799) to Simeon <8095> and Levi <3878>, Ye have troubled <5916>(8804) me to make me to stink <887>(8687) among the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of the land <776>, among the Canaanites <3669> and the Perizzites <6522>: and I being few <4962> in number <4557>, they shall gather themselves together <622>(8738) against me, and slay me <5221>(8689); and I shall be destroyed <8045>(8738), I and my house <1004>.
31. And they said <559>(8799), Should he deal <6213>(8799) with our sister <269> as with an harlot <2181>(8802)?
1. And God <430> said <559>(8799) unto Jacob <3290>, Arise <6965>(8798), go up <5927>(8798) to Bethel <1008>, and dwell <3427>(8798) there: and make <6213>(8798) there an altar <4196> unto God <410>, that appeared <7200>(8737) unto thee when thou fleddest <1272>(8800) from the face <6440> of Esau <6215> thy brother <251>.
2. Then Jacob <3290> said <559>(8799) unto his household <1004>, and to all that were with him, Put away <5493>(8685) the strange <5236> gods <430> that are among you <8432>, and be clean <2891>(8690), and change <2498>(8685) your garments <8071>:
3. And let us arise <6965>(8799), and go up <5927>(8799) to Bethel <1008>; and I will make <6213>(8799) there an altar <4196> unto God <410>, who answered <6030>(8802) me in the day <3117> of my distress <6869>, and was with me in the way <1870> which I went <1980>(8804).
4. And they gave <5414>(8799) unto Jacob <3290> all the strange <5236> gods <430> which were in their hand <3027>, and all their earrings <5141> which were in their ears <241>; and Jacob <3290> hid <2934>(8799) them under the oak <424> which was by Shechem <7927>.
5. And they journeyed <5265>(8799): and the terror <2847> of God <430> was upon the cities <5892> that were round about <5439> them, and they did not pursue <7291>(8804) after <310> the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290>.
6. So Jacob <3290> came <935>(8799) to Luz <3870>, which is in the land <776> of Canaan <3667>, that is, Bethel <1008>, he and all the people <5971> that were with him.
7. And he built <1129>(8799) there an altar <4196>, and called <7121>(8799) the place <4725> Elbethel <416>: because there God <430> appeared <1540>(8738) unto him, when he fled <1272>(8800) from the face <6440> of his brother <251>.
8. But Deborah <1683> Rebekah's <7259> nurse <3243>(8688) died <4191>(8799), and she was buried <6912>(8735) beneath Bethel <1008> under an oak <437>: and the name <8034> of it was called <7121>(8799) Allonbachuth <439>.
9. And God <430> appeared <7200>(8735) unto Jacob <3290> again, when he came <935>(8800) out of Padanaram <6307>, and blessed <1288>(8762) him.
10. And God <430> said <559>(8799) unto him, Thy name <8034> is Jacob <3290>: thy name <8034> shall not be called <7121>(8735) any more Jacob <3290>, but Israel <3478> shall be thy name <8034>: and he called <7121>(8799) his name <8034> Israel <3478>.
11. And God <430> said <559>(8799) unto him, I am God <410> Almighty <7706>: be fruitful <6509>(8798) and multiply <7235>(8798); a nation <1471> and a company <6951> of nations <1471> shall be of thee, and kings <4428> shall come <3318>(8799) out of thy loins <2504>;
12. And the land <776> which I gave <5414>(8804) Abraham <85> and Isaac <3327>, to thee I will give it <5414>(8799), and to thy seed <2233> after thee <310> will I give <5414>(8799) the land <776>.
13. And God <430> went up <5927>(8799) from him in the place <4725> where he talked <1696>(8765) with him.
14. And Jacob <3290> set up <5324>(8686) a pillar <4676> in the place <4725> where he talked <1696>(8765) with him, even a pillar <4678> of stone <68>: and he poured <5258>(8686) a drink offering <5262> thereon, and he poured <3332>(8799) oil <8081> thereon.
15. And Jacob <3290> called <7121>(8799) the name <8034> of the place <4725> where God <430> spake <1696>(8765) with him, Bethel <1008>.
16. And they journeyed <5265>(8799) from Bethel <1008>; and there was but <5750> a little <3530> way <776> to come <935>(8800) to Ephrath <672>: and Rachel <7354> travailed <3205>(8799), and she had hard <7185>(8762) labour <3205>(8800).
17. And it came to pass, when she was in hard <7185>(8687) labour <3205>(8800), that the midwife <3205>(8764) said <559>(8799) unto her, Fear <3372>(8799) not; thou shalt have this son <1121> also.
18. And it came to pass, as her soul <5315> was in departing <3318>(8800), (for she died <4191>(8804)) that she called <7121>(8799) his name <8034> Benoni <1126>: but his father <1> called <7121>(8804) him Benjamin <1144>.
19. And Rachel <7354> died <4191>(8799), and was buried <6912>(8735) in the way <1870> to Ephrath <672>, which is Bethlehem <1035>.
20. And Jacob <3290> set <5324>(8686) a pillar <4676> upon her grave <6900>: that is the pillar <4678> of Rachel's <7354> grave <6900> unto this day <3117>.
21. And Israel <3478> journeyed <5265>(8799), and spread <5186>(8799) his tent <168> beyond <1973> the tower <4026> of Edar <4029>.
22. And it came to pass, when Israel <3478> dwelt <7931>(8800) in that land <776>, that Reuben <7205> went <3212>(8799) and lay <7901>(8799) with Bilhah <1090> his father's <1> concubine <6370>: and Israel <3478> heard <8085>(8799) it. Now the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290> were twelve <8147> <6240>:
23. The sons <1121> of Leah <3812>; Reuben <7205>, Jacob's <3290> firstborn <1060>, and Simeon <8095>, and Levi <3878>, and Judah <3063>, and Issachar <3485>, and Zebulun <2074>:
24. The sons <1121> of Rachel <7354>; Joseph <3130>, and Benjamin <1144>:
25. And the sons <1121> of Bilhah <1090>, Rachel's <7354> handmaid <8198>; Dan <1835>, and Naphtali <5321>:
26. And the sons <1121> of Zilpah <2153>, Leah's <3812> handmaid <8198>; Gad <1410>, and Asher <836>: these are the sons <1121> of Jacob <3290>, which were born <3205>(8795) to him in Padanaram <6307>.
27. And Jacob <3290> came <935>(8799) unto Isaac <3327> his father <1> unto Mamre <4471>, unto the city of Arbah <7153>, which is Hebron <2275>, where Abraham <85> and Isaac <3327> sojourned <1481>(8804).
28. And the days <3117> of Isaac <3327> were an hundred <3967> <8141> and fourscore <8084> years <8141>.
29. And Isaac <3327> gave up the ghost <1478>(8799), and died <4191>(8799), and was gathered <622>(8735) unto his people <5971>, being old <2205> and full <7649> of days <3117>: and his sons <1121> Esau <6215> and Jacob <3290> buried <6912>(8799) him.
Notes that are not verse specific
This psalm calls for patience - the fourth component of the fruit of the spirit (Gal 5:22). Let's not concern ourselves with the ungodly or their ways, even though they might prosper in this life (Psa 73:12). We set our sights on the Kingdom whence is our prize (Matt 6:21, Phil 3:14).
Michael Parry [Montreal (Can)] Comment added in 2004 Reply to Michael
37:11 But the meek shall inherit the land
Moses was the meekest person on the earth at that time (Numbers 12:3). Moses meekness lay in his putting the wellbeing of others ahead of his own wellbeing, even to proposing to God that he (Moses) lose the Kingdom if Israel could be spared God's judgment (Exodus 31:32). God, of course, would have none of this, but was impressed with Moses selflessness.
Thus meek people often give more than they receive, in this life.
BUT the meek shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). They have a rich reward - in the Kingdom.

1. A Psalm of David <1732>. Fret <2734>(8691) not thyself because of evildoers <7489>(8688), neither be thou envious <7065>(8762) against the workers <6213>(8802) of iniquity <5766>.
2. For they shall soon <4120> be cut down <5243>(8799) like the grass <2682>, and wither <5034>(8799) as the green <3418> herb <1877>.
3. Trust <982>(8798) in the LORD <3068>, and do <6213>(8798) good <2896>; so shalt thou dwell <7931>(8798) in the land <776>, and verily <530> thou shalt be fed <7462>(8798).

6. And he shall bring forth <3318>(8689) thy righteousness <6664> as the light <216>, and thy judgment <4941> as the noonday <6672>.
7. Rest <1826>(8798) in the LORD <3068>, and wait patiently <2342>(8708) for him: fret <2734>(8691) not thyself because of him who prospereth <6743>(8688) in his way <1870>, because of the man <376> who bringeth <6213> <0> wicked devices <4209> to pass <6213>(8802).
8. Cease <7503>(8685) from anger <639>, and forsake <5800>(8798) wrath <2534>: fret <2734>(8691) not thyself in any wise <389> to do evil <7489>(8687).
9. For evildoers <7489>(8688) shall be cut off <3772>(8735): but those that wait <6960>(8802) upon the LORD <3068>, they shall inherit <3423>(8799) the earth <776>.
10. For yet a little while <4592>, and the wicked <7563> shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider <995>(8712) his place <4725>, and it shall not be.

12. The wicked <7563> plotteth <2161>(8802) against the just <6662>, and gnasheth <2786>(8802) upon him with his teeth <8127>.
13. The Lord <136> shall laugh <7832>(8799) at him: for he seeth <7200>(8804) that his day <3117> is coming <935>(8799).
14. The wicked <7563> have drawn out <6605>(8804) the sword <2719>, and have bent <1869>(8804) their bow <7198>, to cast down <5307>(8687) the poor <6041> and needy <34>, and to slay <2873>(8800) such as be of upright <3477> conversation <1870>.
15. Their sword <2719> shall enter <935>(8799) into their own heart <3820>, and their bows <7198> shall be broken <7665>(8735).
16. A little <4592> that a righteous man <6662> hath is better <2896> than the riches <1995> of many <7227> wicked <7563>.
17. For the arms <2220> of the wicked <7563> shall be broken <7665>(8735): but the LORD <3068> upholdeth <5564>(8802) the righteous <6662>.
18. The LORD <3068> knoweth <3045>(8802) the days <3117> of the upright <8549>: and their inheritance <5159> shall be for ever <5769>.
19. They shall not be ashamed <954>(8799) in the evil <7451> time <6256>: and in the days <3117> of famine <7459> they shall be satisfied <7646>(8799).
20. But the wicked <7563> shall perish <6>(8799), and the enemies <341>(8802) of the LORD <3068> shall be as the fat <3368> of lambs <3733>: they shall consume <3615>(8804); into smoke <6227> shall they consume away <3615>(8804).
21. The wicked <7563> borroweth <3867>(8801), and payeth not again <7999>(8762): but the righteous <6662> sheweth mercy <2603>(8802), and giveth <5414>(8802).
22. For such as be blessed <1288>(8794) of him shall inherit <3423>(8799) the earth <776>; and they that be cursed <7043>(8794) of him shall be cut off <3772>(8735).
23. The steps <4703> of a good man <1397> are ordered <3559>(8797) by the LORD <3068>: and he delighteth <2654>(8799) in his way <1870>.
24. Though he fall <5307>(8799), he shall not be utterly cast down <2904>(8714): for the LORD <3068> upholdeth <5564>(8802) him with his hand <3027>.
25. I have been young <5288>, and now am old <2204>(8804); yet have I not seen <7200>(8804) the righteous <6662> forsaken <5800>(8737), nor his seed <2233> begging <1245>(8764) bread <3899>.
26. He is ever <3117> merciful <2603>(8802), and lendeth <3867>(8688); and his seed <2233> is blessed <1293>.
27. Depart <5493>(8798) from evil <7451>, and do <6213>(8798) good <2896>; and dwell <7931>(8798) for evermore <5769>.
28. For the LORD <3068> loveth <157>(8802) judgment <4941>, and forsaketh <5800>(8799) not his saints <2623>; they are preserved <8104>(8738) for ever <5769>: but the seed <2233> of the wicked <7563> shall be cut off <3772>(8738).
29. The righteous <6662> shall inherit <3423>(8799) the land <776>, and dwell <7931>(8799) therein for ever <5703>.
30. The mouth <6310> of the righteous <6662> speaketh <1897>(8799) wisdom <2451>, and his tongue <3956> talketh <1696>(8762) of judgment <4941>.
31. The law <8451> of his God <430> is in his heart <3820>; none of his steps <838> shall slide <4571>(8799).
32. The wicked <7563> watcheth <6822>(8802) the righteous <6662>, and seeketh <1245>(8764) to slay <4191>(8687) him.
33. The LORD <3068> will not leave <5800>(8799) him in his hand <3027>, nor condemn <7561>(8686) him when he is judged <8199>(8736).
34. Wait <6960>(8761) on the LORD <3068>, and keep <8104>(8798) his way <1870>, and he shall exalt <7311>(8787) thee to inherit <3423>(8800) the land <776>: when the wicked <7563> are cut off <3772>(8736), thou shalt see <7200>(8799) it.
35. I have seen <7200>(8804) the wicked <7563> in great power <6184>, and spreading <6168>(8693) himself like a green <7488> bay tree <249>.
36. Yet he passed away <5674>(8799), and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought <1245>(8762) him, but he could not be found <4672>(8738).
37. Mark <8104>(8798) the perfect <8535> man, and behold <7200>(8798) the upright <3477>: for the end <319> of that man <376> is peace <7965>.
38. But the transgressors <6586>(8802) shall be destroyed <8045>(8738) together <3162>: the end <319> of the wicked <7563> shall be cut off <3772>(8738).
39. But the salvation <8668> of the righteous <6662> is of the LORD <3068>: he is their strength <4581> in the time <6256> of trouble <6869>.
40. And the LORD <3068> shall help <5826>(8799) them, and deliver <6403>(8762) them: he shall deliver <6403>(8762) them from the wicked <7563>, and save <3467>(8686) them, because they trust <2620>(8804) in him.
Notes that are not verse specific
This chapter concludes with an answer to the challenge which the elders had originally put to him in chapter ch. 21:23... by what authority are you doing these things? i.e. teaching in the temple. The ultimate answer was given as the implications of his final question, what think ye of Messiah, whose son is he... why does David in spirit call him 'my Lord'? came home to them. His authority to teach in God's house came from the fact that Messiah was not only son of David, but ALSO Son of GOD. No wonder they dare not ask him any more questions!

1. And <2532> Jesus <2424> answered <611>(5679) and spake <2036>(5627) unto them <846> again <3825> by <1722> parables <3850>, and said <3004>(5723),
2. The kingdom <932> of heaven <3772> is like <3666>(5681) unto a certain <444> king <935>, which <3748> made <4160>(5656) a marriage <1062> for his <848> son <5207>,
3. And <2532> sent forth <649>(5656) his <848> servants <1401> to call <2564>(5658) them that were bidden <2564>(5772) to <1519> the wedding <1062>: and <2532> they would <2309>(5707) not <3756> come <2064>(5629).
4. Again <3825>, he sent forth <649>(5656) other <243> servants <1401>, saying <3004>(5723), Tell <2036>(5628) them which are bidden <2564>(5772), Behold <2400>(5628), I have prepared <2090>(5656) my <3450> dinner <712>: my <3450> oxen <5022> and <2532> my fatlings <4619> are killed <2380>(5772), and <2532> all things <3956> are ready <2092>: come <1205>(5773) unto <1519> the marriage <1062>.
5. But <1161> they made light of <272>(5660) it, and went their ways <565>(5627), one <3303> to <1519> his <2398> farm <68>, another <1161> to <1519> his <848> merchandise <1711>:
6. And <1161> the remnant <3062> took <2902>(5660) his <846> servants <1401>, and <2532> entreated them spitefully <5195>(5656), and <2532> slew <615>(5656) them.
7. But <1161> when the king <935> heard <191>(5660) thereof, he was wroth <3710>(5681): and <2532> he sent forth <3992>(5660) his <848> armies <4753>, and destroyed <622>(5656) those <1565> murderers <5406>, and <2532> burned up <1714>(5656) their <846> city <4172>.
8. Then <5119> saith he <3004>(5719) to his <848> servants <1401>, <3303> The wedding <1062> is <2076>(5748) ready <2092>, but <1161> they which were bidden <2564>(5772) were <2258>(5713) not <3756> worthy <514>.
9. Go ye <4198>(5737) therefore <3767> into <1909> the highways <1327> <3598>, and <2532> as many as <3745> <302> ye shall find <2147>(5632), bid <2564>(5657) to <1519> the marriage <1062>.
10. So <2532> those <1565> servants <1401> went out <1831>(5631) into <1519> the highways <3598>, and gathered together <4863>(5627) all <3956> as many as <3745> they found <2147>(5627), both <5037> bad <4190> and <2532> good <18>: and <2532> the wedding <1062> was furnished <4130>(5681) with guests <345>(5740).
11. And <1161> when <1525> <0> the king <935> came in <1525>(5631) to see <2300>(5664) the guests <345>(5740), he saw <1492>(5627) there <1563> a man <444> which had <1746> <0> not <3756> on <1746>(5765) a wedding <1062> garment <1742>:
12. And <2532> he saith <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Friend <2083>, how <4459> camest thou <1525>(5627) in hither <5602> not <3361> having <2192>(5723) a wedding <1062> garment <1742>? And <1161> he was speechless <5392>(5681).
13. Then <5119> said <2036>(5627) the king <935> to the servants <1249>, Bind <1210>(5660) him <846> hand <5495> and <2532> foot <4228>, and take <142> <0> him <846> away <142>(5657), and <2532> cast <1544>(5628) him into <1519> outer <1857> darkness <4655>; there <1563> shall be <2071>(5704) weeping <2805> and <2532> gnashing <1030> of teeth <3599>.
14. For <1063> many <4183> are <1526>(5748) called <2822>, but <1161> few <3641> are chosen <1588>.
15. Then <5119> went <4198>(5679) the Pharisees <5330>, and took <2983>(5627) counsel <4824> how <3704> they might entangle <3802>(5661) him <846> in <1722> his talk <3056>.
16. And <2532> they sent out <649>(5719) unto him <846> their <848> disciples <3101> with <3326> the Herodians <2265>, saying <3004>(5723), Master <1320>, we know <1492>(5758) that <3754> thou art <1488>(5748) true <227>, and <2532> teachest <1321>(5719) the way <3598> of God <2316> in <1722> truth <225>, <2532> neither <3756> carest <3199>(5719) thou <4671> for <4012> any <3762> man: for <1063> thou regardest <991>(5719) not <1519> <3756> the person <4383> of men <444>.
17. Tell <2036>(5628) us <2254> therefore <3767>, What <5101> thinkest <1380>(5719) thou <4671>? Is it lawful <1832>(5748) to give <1325>(5629) tribute <2778> unto Caesar <2541>, or <2228> not <3756>?
18. But <1161> Jesus <2424> perceived <1097>(5631) their <846> wickedness <4189>, and said <2036>(5627), Why <5101> tempt ye <3985>(5719) me <3165>, ye hypocrites <5273>?
19. Shew <1925>(5657) me <3427> the tribute <2778> money <3546>. And <1161> they brought <4374>(5656) unto him <846> a penny <1220>.
20. And <2532> he saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Whose <5101> is this <3778> image <1504> and <2532> superscription <1923>?
21. They say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Caesar's <2541>. Then <5119> saith he <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Render <591>(5628) therefore <3767> unto Caesar <2541> the things which are <3588> Caesar's <2541>; and <2532> unto God <2316> the things that are <3588> God's <2316>.
22. When <2532> they had heard <191>(5660) these words, they marvelled <2296>(5656), and <2532> left <863>(5631) him <846>, and went their way <565>(5627).
23. The same <1722> <1565> day <2250> came <4334>(5656) to him <846> the Sadducees <4523>, which <3588> say <3004>(5723) that there is <1511>(5750) no <3361> resurrection <386>, and <2532> asked <1905>(5656) him <846>,
24. Saying <3004>(5723), Master <1320>, Moses <3475> said <2036>(5627), If <1437> a man <5100> die <599>(5632), having <2192>(5723) no <3361> children <5043>, his <848> brother <80> shall marry <1918>(5692) his <846> wife <1135>, and <2532> raise up <450>(5692) seed <4690> unto his <846> brother <80>.
25. Now <1161> there were <2258>(5713) with <3844> us <2254> seven <2033> brethren <80>: and <2532> the first <4413>, when he had married a wife <1060>(5660), deceased <5053>(5656), and <2532>, having <2192>(5723) no <3361> issue <4690>, left <863>(5656) his <848> wife <1135> unto his <848> brother <80>:
26. Likewise <3668> the second <1208> also <2532>, and <2532> the third <5154>, unto <2193> the seventh <2033>.
27. And <1161> last <5305> of all <3956> the woman <1135> died <599>(5627) also <2532>.
28. Therefore <3767> in <1722> the resurrection <386> whose <5101> wife <1135> shall she be <2071>(5704) of the seven <2033>? for <1063> they all <3956> had <2192>(5627) her <846>.
29. Jesus <2424> answered <611>(5679) and <1161> said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Ye do err <4105>(5744), not <3361> knowing <1492>(5761) the scriptures <1124>, nor <3366> the power <1411> of God <2316>.
30. For <1063> in <1722> the resurrection <386> they neither <3777> marry <1060>(5719), nor <3777> are given in marriage <1547>(5743), but <235> are <1526>(5748) as <5613> the angels <32> of God <2316> in <1722> heaven <3772>.
31. But <1161> as touching <4012> the resurrection <386> of the dead <3498>, have ye <314> <0> not <3756> read <314>(5627) that which <3588> was spoken <4483>(5685) unto you <5213> by <5259> God <2316>, saying <3004>(5723),
32. I <1473> am <1510>(5748) the God <2316> of Abraham <11>, and <2532> the God <2316> of Isaac <2464>, and <2532> the God <2316> of Jacob <2384>? God <2316> is <2076>(5748) not <3756> the God <2316> of the dead <3498>, but <235> of the living <2198>(5723).
33. And <2532> when the multitude <3793> heard <191>(5660) this, they were astonished <1605>(5712) at <1909> his <846> doctrine <1322>.
34. But <1161> when the Pharisees <5330> had heard <191>(5660) that <3754> he had put <5392> <0> the Sadducees <4523> to silence <5392>(5656), they were gathered together <4863>(5681) <1909> <846>.
35. Then <2532> one <1520> of <1537> them <846>, which was a lawyer <3544>, asked <1905>(5656) him a question, tempting <3985>(5723) him <846>, and <2532> saying <3004>(5723),
36. Master <1320>, which <4169> is the great <3173> commandment <1785> in <1722> the law <3551>?
37. <1161> Jesus <2424> said <2036>(5627) unto him <846>, Thou shalt love <25>(5692) the Lord <2962> thy <4675> God <2316> with <1722> all <3650> thy <4675> heart <2588>, and <2532> with <1722> all <3650> thy <4675> soul <5590>, and <2532> with <1722> all <3650> thy <4675> mind <1271>.
38. This <3778> is <2076>(5748) the first <4413> and <2532> great <3173> commandment <1785>.
39. And <1161> the second <1208> is like <3664> unto it <846>, Thou shalt love <25>(5692) thy <4675> neighbour <4139> as <5613> thyself <4572>.
40. On <1722> these <5025> two <1417> commandments <1785> hang <2910>(5743) all <3650> the law <3551> and <2532> the prophets <4396>.
41. While <1161> the Pharisees <5330> were gathered together <4863>(5772), Jesus <2424> asked <1905>(5656) them <846>,
42. Saying <3004>(5723), What <5101> think <1380>(5719) ye <5213> of <4012> Christ <5547>? whose <5101> son <5207> is he <2076>(5748)? They say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, The Son of David <1138>.
43. He saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, How <4459> then <3767> doth David <1138> in <1722> spirit <4151> call <2564>(5719) him <846> Lord <2962>, saying <3004>(5723),
44. The LORD <2962> said <2036>(5627) unto my <3450> Lord <2962>, Sit thou <2521>(5737) on <1537> my <3450> right hand <1188>, till <2193> <302> I make <5087>(5632) thine <4675> enemies <2190> thy <4675> footstool <5286> <4228>?
45. If <1487> David <1138> then <3767> call <2564>(5719) him <846> Lord <2962>, how <4459> is he <2076>(5748) his <846> son <5207>?
46. And <2532> no man <3762> was able <1410>(5711) to answer <611>(5677) him <846> a word <3056>, neither <3761> durst <5111>(5656) any <5100> man from <575> that <1565> day <2250> forth ask <1905>(5658) him <846> any more <3765> questions.
