13:7 This is Nehemiah's second visit to Jerusalem and is the event which Malachi refers to (3:1). Of course Malachi is speaking of John the Baptist also but his first focus is the coming of Nehemiah to resolve the problems amongst the priesthood which Nehemiah 13 speaks about.

Nehemiah exercised strong leadership to make sure that the congregation of the LORD walked correctly. We see that Paul did the same thing for the Corinthians (for example). Are we prepared to offer strong leadership in the LORD's community today?

We need to remember that the events which occurred during Israel's history were written down for us to consider (Rom 15:4). Nehemiah took meticulous care to keep the LORD's community separate and holy. The same care should apply today in the household of Jesus. Marriages with non-believers are not acceptable (2Cor 6:14).

Consider how grieved Nehemiah was, that all through this narrative he is appealing to God to spare him and remember his deeds:
verse |
appeal |
v14 |
Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds |
v22 |
Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy. |
v29 |
Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood |
v31 |
Remember me, O my God, for good |

13:6 While this [Tobiah living in Temple] was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem
Nehemiah was recalled to Susa for an unspecified period. During his absence his reforms, that spanned 12 years, were all trashed. Possibly an interim governor was installed who knew not Nehemiah. The new Governor, possibly at the urging of Sanballat and Tobiah, replaced Hanani and Hananiah (we do not hear of them again) and Ezra may have been recalled to Babylon. Sanballat and Tobiah possibly charmed the new Governor. Temple and ecclesial life ceased to exist. Complacency and compromise were everywhere (Malachi's prophecy regarding their compromising, complacent attitude was written at this time).
Nehemiah was alone - except for his strengthening from God.
That is why he prays to God with his "Remember me" appeals to God:
13:14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds
13:22 Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
13:29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood
13:31 Remember me, O my God, for good
Notice that the first three "Remember" passages are localised and specific. For example v14 "Remember me, O my God, concerning this [arrangements to restore tithing v12].
Nehemiah is asking God to support him because he is alone and is fighting some formidable and entrenched apostasy. Only with God's immediate and formidable help ("Remember me") could success be achieved. Nehemiah risked his life.
Nehemiah's last prayer "Remember me, O my God, for good" is less specific and may simply mean "In all that I am now doing, please bless my efforts". But it could also be more personal and future-focussed. It could be Nehemiah's way of surveying his life and asking that he obtain the Kingdom when Christ appears (cp the thief on the Cross: "Remember when you come into your Kingdom" Luke 23:42).
With those words, the book of Nehemiah ends and we never hear of Nehemiah again.

13:1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses
The commentators are divided as to whether the dedication of the wall 12:27ff is out of place in the record. They all posit it prior to Nehemiah’s departure to Babylon and subsequent return (the mainstream interpretation).
But they are divided as to whether it occurred immediately after the building of the wall or whether it occurred some time later but before Nehemiah’s return to Babylon. See, for example, the Pulpit Commentary where it is argued that the dedication occurred some time after the wall was completed, but prior to Nehemiah’s departure.
But what does Nehemiah 13:1 “On that day …” refer to? If it is the same day as Nehemiah 12:44 then it requires that Nehemiah 13:4 “before this” really means before the day of Nehemiah 12:44. This would place the apostasy of ch 13 earlier than Nehemiah 12:27.
By this interpretation, the dedication of the wall occurs much later than the walls being built - 12 years (Nehemiah 5:14) plus probably at least another year while Nehemiah was in Babylon).
However this seems odd to me – Why would such an important event as the dedication of the wall be delayed for so long? What would the reason be? And if purification of the walls and gates (12:30) is a reference to the apostasy of gentile intrusion found in ch 13, why is there no mention of this as part of the context and cause of the dedication in ch 12?
However, if “On that day” in 13:1 is not the same day as 12:44 but rather some day after Nehemiah has returned from Babylon, then the mainstream interpretation makes sense and chapters 12 and 13 proceed chronologically in that order.
Interestingly, one commentator suggests that 12:44 and 13:1 refer to the same day, but in confirmation of the mainstream interpretation, he argues that 13:4 “before this” should read “after this” meaning after the day of 12:44 and 13:1, although he supplied no proof.

1. On that day <3117> they read <7121>(8738) in the book <5612> of Moses <4872> in the audience <241> of the people <5971>; and therein was found <4672>(8738) written <3789>(8803), that the Ammonite <5984> and the Moabite <4125> should not come <935>(8799) into the congregation <6951> of God <430> for <5704> ever <5769>;
2. Because they met <6923>(8765) not the children <1121> of Israel <3478> with bread <3899> and with water <4325>, but hired <7936>(8799) Balaam <1109> against them, that he should curse <7043>(8763) them: howbeit our God <430> turned <2015>(8799) the curse <7045> into a blessing <1293>.
3. Now it came to pass, when they had heard <8085>(8800) the law <8451>, that they separated <914>(8686) from Israel <3478> all the mixed multitude <6154>.
4. And before <6440> this, Eliashib <475> the priest <3548>, having the oversight <5414>(8803) of the chamber <3957> of the house <1004> of our God <430>, was allied <7138> unto Tobiah <2900>:
5. And he had prepared <6213>(8799) for him a great <1419> chamber <3957>, where aforetime <6440> they laid <5414>(8802) the meat offerings <4503>, the frankincense <3828>, and the vessels <3627>, and the tithes <4643> of the corn <1715>, the new wine <8492>, and the oil <3323>, which was commanded <4687> to be given to the Levites <3881>, and the singers <7891>(8789), and the porters <7778>; and the offerings <8641> of the priests <3548>.
6. But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem <3389>: for in the two <8147> and thirtieth <7970> year <8141> of Artaxerxes <783> king <4428> of Babylon <894> came <935>(8804) I unto the king <4428>, and after <7093> certain days <3117> obtained I leave <7592>(8738) of the king <4428>:
7. And I came <935>(8799) to Jerusalem <3389>, and understood <995>(8799) of the evil <7451> that Eliashib <475> did <6213>(8804) for Tobiah <2900>, in preparing <6213>(8800) him a chamber <5393> in the courts <2691> of the house <1004> of God <430>.
8. And it grieved <3415>(8799) me sore <3966>: therefore I cast forth <7993>(8686) all the household <1004> stuff <3627> of Tobiah <2900> out of <2351> the chamber <3957>.
9. Then I commanded <559>(8799), and they cleansed <2891>(8762) the chambers <3957>: and thither brought I again <7725>(8686) the vessels <3627> of the house <1004> of God <430>, with the meat offering <4503> and the frankincense <3828>.
10. And I perceived <3045>(8799) that the portions <4521> of the Levites <3881> had not been given <5414>(8738) them: for the Levites <3881> and the singers <7891>(8789), that did <6213>(8802) the work <4399>, were fled <1272>(8799) every one <376> to his field <7704>.
11. Then contended <7378>(8799) I with the rulers <5461>, and said <559>(8799), Why is the house <1004> of God <430> forsaken <5800>(8738)? And I gathered them together <6908>(8762), and set <5975>(8686) them in their place <5977>.
12. Then brought <935>(8689) all Judah <3063> the tithe <4643> of the corn <1715> and the new wine <8492> and the oil <3323> unto the treasuries <214>.
13. And I made treasurers <686>(8799) over the treasuries <214>, Shelemiah <8018> the priest <3548>, and Zadok <6659> the scribe <5608>(8802), and of the Levites <3881>, Pedaiah <6305>: and next to them <3027> was Hanan <2605> the son <1121> of Zaccur <2139>, the son <1121> of Mattaniah <4983>: for they were counted <2803>(8738) faithful <539>(8737), and their office was to distribute <2505>(8800) unto their brethren <251>.
14. Remember <2142>(8798) me, O my God <430>, concerning this, and wipe not out <4229>(8686) my good <2617> deeds that I have done <6213>(8804) for the house <1004> of my God <430>, and for the offices <4929> thereof.
15. In those days <3117> saw <7200>(8804) I in Judah <3063> some treading <1869>(8802) wine presses <1660> on the sabbath <7676>, and bringing in <935>(8688) sheaves <6194>, and lading <6006>(8802) asses <2543>; as also wine <3196>, grapes <6025>, and figs <8384>, and all manner of burdens <4853>, which they brought <935>(8688) into Jerusalem <3389> on the sabbath <7676> day <3117>: and I testified <5749>(8686) against them in the day <3117> wherein they sold <4376>(8800) victuals <6718>.
16. There dwelt <3427>(8804) men of Tyre <6876> also therein, which brought <935>(8688) fish <1709>(8675) <1709>, and all manner of ware <4377>, and sold <4376>(8802) on the sabbath <7676> unto the children <1121> of Judah <3063>, and in Jerusalem <3389>.
17. Then I contended <7378>(8799) with the nobles <2715> of Judah <3063>, and said <559>(8799) unto them, What evil <7451> thing <1697> is this that ye do <6213>(8802), and profane <2490>(8764) the sabbath <7676> day <3117>?
18. Did <6213>(8804) not your fathers <1> thus, and did <935> <0> not our God <430> bring <935>(8686) all this evil <7451> upon us, and upon this city <5892>? yet ye bring <935>(8686) more <3254>(8688) wrath <2740> upon Israel <3478> by profaning <2490>(8763) the sabbath <7676>.
19. And it came to pass, that when the gates <8179> of Jerusalem <3389> began to be dark <6751>(8804) before <6440> the sabbath <7676>, I commanded <559>(8799) that the gates <1817> should be shut <5462>(8735), and charged <559>(8799) that they should not be opened <6605>(8799) till after <310> the sabbath <7676>: and some of my servants <5288> set <5975>(8689) I at the gates <8179>, that there should no burden <4853> be brought in <935>(8799) on the sabbath <7676> day <3117>.
20. So the merchants <7402>(8802) and sellers <4376>(8802) of all kind of ware <4465> lodged <3885>(8799) without <2351> Jerusalem <3389> once <6471> or twice <8147>.
21. Then I testified <5749>(8686) against them, and said <559>(8799) unto them, Why lodge <3885>(8801) ye about <5048> the wall <2346>? if ye do so again <8138>(8799), I will lay <7971>(8799) hands <3027> on you. From that time <6256> forth came <935>(8804) they no more on the sabbath <7676>.
22. And I commanded <559>(8799) the Levites <3881> that they should cleanse <2891>(8693) themselves, and that they should come <935>(8802) and keep <8104>(8802) the gates <8179>, to sanctify <6942>(8763) the sabbath <7676> day <3117>. Remember <2142>(8798) me, O my God <430>, concerning this also, and spare <2347>(8798) me according to the greatness <7230> of thy mercy <2617>.
23. In those days <3117> also saw <7200>(8804) I Jews <3064> that had married <3427>(8689) wives <802> of Ashdod <796>, of Ammon <5984>, and of Moab <4125>:
24. And their children <1121> spake <1696>(8764) half <2677> in the speech of Ashdod <797>, and could <5234>(8688) not speak <1696>(8763) in the Jews' language <3066>, but according to the language <3956> of each people <5971>.
25. And I contended <7378>(8799) with them, and cursed <7043>(8762) them, and smote <5221>(8686) certain <582> of them, and plucked off their hair <4803>(8799), and made them swear <7650>(8686) by God <430>, saying, Ye shall not give <5414>(8799) your daughters <1323> unto their sons <1121>, nor take <5375>(8799) their daughters <1323> unto your sons <1121>, or for yourselves.
26. Did not Solomon <8010> king <4428> of Israel <3478> sin <2398>(8804) by these things? yet among many <7227> nations <1471> was there no king <4428> like him, who was beloved <157>(8803) of his God <430>, and God <430> made <5414>(8799) him king <4428> over all Israel <3478>: nevertheless even him <1571> did outlandish <5237> women <802> cause to sin <2398>(8689).
27. Shall we then hearken <8085>(8799) unto you to do <6213>(8800) all this great <1419> evil <7451>, to transgress <4603>(8800) against our God <430> in marrying <3427>(8687) strange <5237> wives <802>?
28. And one of the sons <1121> of Joiada <3111>, the son <1121> of Eliashib <475> the high <1419> priest <3548>, was son in law <2860> to Sanballat <5571> the Horonite <2772>: therefore I chased <1272>(8686) him from me.
29. Remember <2142>(8798) them, O my God <430>, because they have defiled <1352> the priesthood <3550>, and the covenant <1285> of the priesthood <3550>, and of the Levites <3881>.
30. Thus cleansed <2891>(8765) I them from all strangers <5236>, and appointed <5975>(8686) the wards <4931> of the priests <3548> and the Levites <3881>, every one <376> in his business <4399>;
31. And for the wood <6086> offering <7133>, at times <6256> appointed <2163>(8794), and for the firstfruits <1061>. Remember <2142>(8798) me, O my God <430>, for good <2896>.
Notes that are not verse specific
As we read this chapter and realise that this wrath was poured out on them because of their idolatry, let us take heed and be sure that our worship is that of the true God and is not motivated by anything manmade. Let us also remember that covetousness is idolatry. Col.3:5

5:11 This verse quotes from the curse in Deuteronomy 28:30. 5:21 quotes from Leviticus 26:31. You may have noticed other quotations from the curses in earlier chapters, a recurring theme in Amos to show that the nation had chosen evil rather than good.

1. Hear <8085>(8798) ye this word <1697> which I take up <5375>(8802) against you, even a lamentation <7015>, O house <1004> of Israel <3478>.
2. The virgin <1330> of Israel <3478> is fallen <5307>(8804); she shall no more <3254>(8686) rise <6965>(8800): she is forsaken <5203>(8738) upon her land <127>; there is none to raise her up <6965>(8688).
3. For thus saith <559>(8804) the Lord <136> GOD <3069>; The city <5892> that went out <3318>(8802) by a thousand <505> shall leave <7604>(8686) an hundred <3967>, and that which went forth <3318>(8802) by an hundred <3967> shall leave <7604>(8686) ten <6235>, to the house <1004> of Israel <3478>.
4. For thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> unto the house <1004> of Israel <3478>, Seek <1875>(8798) ye me, and ye shall live <2421>(8798):
5. But seek <1875>(8799) not Bethel <1008>, nor enter <935>(8799) into Gilgal <1537>, and pass <5674>(8799) not to Beersheba <884>: for Gilgal <1537> shall surely <1540>(8800) go into captivity <1540>(8799), and Bethel <1008> shall come to nought <205>.
6. Seek <1875>(8798) the LORD <3068>, and ye shall live <2421>(8798); lest he break out <6743>(8799) like fire <784> in the house <1004> of Joseph <3130>, and devour <398>(8804) it, and there be none to quench <3518>(8764) it in Bethel <1008>.
7. Ye who turn <2015>(8802) judgment <4941> to wormwood <3939>, and leave off <3240>(8689) righteousness <6666> in the earth <776>,
8. Seek him that maketh <6213>(8802) the seven stars <3598> and Orion <3685>, and turneth <2015>(8802) the shadow of death <6757> into the morning <1242>, and maketh the day <3117> dark <2821>(8689) with night <3915>: that calleth <7121>(8802) for the waters <4325> of the sea <3220>, and poureth them out <8210>(8799) upon the face <6440> of the earth <776>: The LORD <3068> is his name <8034>:
9. That strengtheneth <1082>(8688) the spoiled <7701> against the strong <5794>, so that the spoiled <7701> shall come <935>(8799) against the fortress <4013>.
10. They hate <8130>(8804) him that rebuketh <3198>(8688) in the gate <8179>, and they abhor <8581>(8762) him that speaketh <1696>(8802) uprightly <8549>.
11. Forasmuch <3282> therefore as your treading <1318>(8780) is upon the poor <1800>, and ye take <3947>(8799) from him burdens <4864> of wheat <1250>: ye have built <1129>(8804) houses <1004> of hewn stone <1496>, but ye shall not dwell <3427>(8799) in them; ye have planted <5193>(8804) pleasant <2531> vineyards <3754>, but ye shall not drink <8354>(8799) wine <3196> of them.
12. For I know <3045>(8804) your manifold <7227> transgressions <6588> and your mighty <6099> sins <2403>: they afflict <6887>(8802) the just <6662>, they take <3947>(8802) a bribe <3724>, and they turn aside <5186>(8689) the poor <34> in the gate <8179> from their right.
13. Therefore the prudent <7919>(8688) shall keep silence <1826>(8799) in that time <6256>; for it is an evil <7451> time <6256>.
14. Seek <1875>(8798) good <2896>, and not evil <7451>, that ye may live <2421>(8799): and so the LORD <3068>, the God <430> of hosts <6635>, shall be with you, as ye have spoken <559>(8804).
15. Hate <8130>(8798) the evil <7451>, and love <157>(8798) the good <2896>, and establish <3322>(8685) judgment <4941> in the gate <8179>: it may be that the LORD <3068> God <430> of hosts <6635> will be gracious <2603>(8799) unto the remnant <7611> of Joseph <3130>.
16. Therefore the LORD <3068>, the God <430> of hosts <6635>, the Lord <136>, saith <559>(8804) thus; Wailing <4553> shall be in all streets <7339>; and they shall say <559>(8799) in all the highways <2351>, Alas <1930>! alas <1930>! and they shall call <7121>(8804) the husbandman <406> to mourning <60>, and such as are skilful <3045>(8802) of lamentation <5092> to wailing <4553>.
17. And in all vineyards <3754> shall be wailing <4553>: for I will pass <5674>(8799) through <7130> thee, saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>.
18. Woe <1945> unto you that desire <183>(8693) the day <3117> of the LORD <3068>! to what end <4100> is it for you? the day <3117> of the LORD <3068> is darkness <2822>, and not light <216>.
19. As if a man <376> did flee <5127>(8799) from <6440> a lion <738>, and a bear <1677> met <6293>(8804) him; or went <935>(8804) into the house <1004>, and leaned <5564>(8804) his hand <3027> on the wall <7023>, and a serpent <5175> bit <5391>(8804) him.
20. Shall not the day <3117> of the LORD <3068> be darkness <2822>, and not light <216>? even very dark <651>, and no brightness <5051> in it?
21. I hate <8130>(8804), I despise <3988>(8804) your feast days <2282>, and I will not smell <7306>(8686) in your solemn assemblies <6116>.
22. Though ye offer <5927>(8686) me burnt offerings <5930> and your meat offerings <4503>, I will not accept <7521>(8799) them: neither will I regard <5027>(8686) the peace offerings <8002> of your fat beasts <4806>.
23. Take thou away <5493>(8685) from me the noise <1995> of thy songs <7892>; for I will not hear <8085>(8799) the melody <2172> of thy viols <5035>.
24. But let judgment <4941> run down <1556>(8735) as waters <4325>, and righteousness <6666> as a mighty <386> stream <5158>.
25. Have ye offered <5066>(8689) unto me sacrifices <2077> and offerings <4503> in the wilderness <4057> forty <705> years <8141>, O house <1004> of Israel <3478>?
26. But ye have borne <5375>(8804) the tabernacle <5522> of your Moloch <4428> and Chiun <3594> your images <6754>, the star <3556> of your god <430>, which ye made <6213>(8804) to yourselves.
27. Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity <1540>(8689) beyond <1973> Damascus <1834>, saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>, whose name <8034> is The God <430> of hosts <6635>.
Notes that are not verse specific
1:1 Paul had been a vigorous opponent to the gospel, persecuting Jesus’ followers. But notice that Paul says he is an apostle “by the will of God”. It would have been easy for God to stop the persecution brought by Paul by killing him. But no, He called him to the gospel!
We might not have persecuted Jesus’ followers like Saul of Tarsus did. But we are called “by the will of God” as was Paul.
This knowledge should give us confidence that he will forgive our sins faithfully repented of and grant us a place in His kingdom.

1. Thou <4771> therefore <3767>, my <3450> son <5043>, be strong <1743>(5744) in <1722> the grace <5485> that is in <1722> Christ <5547> Jesus <2424>.
2. And <2532> the things <3739> that thou hast heard <191>(5656) of <3844> me <1700> among <1223> many <4183> witnesses <3144>, the same <5023> commit thou <3908>(5639) to faithful <4103> men <444>, who <3748> shall be <2071>(5704) able <2425> to teach <1321>(5658) others <2087> also <2532>.
3. Thou <4771> therefore <3767> endure hardness <2553>(5657), as <5613> a good <2570> soldier <4757> of Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>.
4. No man <3762> that warreth <4754>(5734) entangleth himself <1707>(5743) with the affairs <4230> of this life <979>; that <2443> he may please <700>(5661) him who hath chosen him to be a soldier <4758>(5660).
5. And <1161> if <1437> a man <5100> also <2532> strive <118>(5725) for masteries, yet is he <4737> <0> not <3756> crowned <4737>(5743), except <3362> he strive <118>(5661) lawfully <3545>.
6. The husbandman <1092> that laboureth <2872>(5723) must be <1163>(5748) first <4413> partaker <3335>(5721) of the fruits <2590>.
7. Consider <3539>(5720) what <3739> I say <3004>(5719); and <1063> the Lord <2962> give <1325>(5630) thee <4671> understanding <4907> in <1722> all things <3956>.
8. Remember <3421>(5720) that Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> of <1537> the seed <4690> of David <1138> was raised <1453>(5772) from <1537> the dead <3498> according to <2596> my <3450> gospel <2098>:
9. Wherein <1722> <3739> I suffer trouble <2553>(5719), as <5613> an evil doer <2557>, even unto <3360> bonds <1199>; but <235> the word <3056> of God <2316> is <1210> <0> not <3756> bound <1210>(5769).
10. Therefore <1223> <5124> I endure <5278>(5719) all things <3956> for the elect's sakes <1223> <1588>, that <2443> they <846> may <5177> <0> also <2532> obtain <5177>(5632) the salvation <4991> which <3588> is in <1722> Christ <5547> Jesus <2424> with <3326> eternal <166> glory <1391>.
11. It is a faithful <4103> saying <3056>: For <1063> if <1487> we be dead with <4880>(5627) him, we shall <4800> <0> also <2532> live with <4800>(5692) him:
12. If <1487> we suffer <5278>(5719), we shall <4821> <0> also <2532> reign with <4821>(5692) him: if <1487> we deny <720>(5736) him, he also <2548> will deny <720>(5695) us <2248>:
13. If <1487> we believe not <569>(5719), yet he <1565> abideth <3306>(5719) faithful <4103>: he cannot <3756> <1410>(5736) deny <720>(5664) himself <1438>.
14. Of these things <5023> put them in remembrance <5279>(5720), charging <1263>(5740) them before <1799> the Lord <2962> that they strive <3054> <0> not <3361> about words <3054>(5721) to <1519> no <3762> profit <5539>, but to <1909> the subverting <2692> of the hearers <191>(5723).
15. Study <4704>(5657) to shew <3936>(5658) thyself <4572> approved <1384> unto God <2316>, a workman <2040> that needeth not to be ashamed <422>, rightly dividing <3718>(5723) the word <3056> of truth <225>.
16. But <1161> shun <4026>(5732) profane <952> and vain babblings <2757>: for <1063> they will increase <4298>(5692) unto <1909> more <4119> ungodliness <763>.
17. And <2532> their <846> word <3056> will eat <2192>(5692) <3542> as <5613> doth a canker <1044>: of whom <3739> is <2076>(5748) Hymenaeus <5211> and <2532> Philetus <5372>;
18. Who <3748> concerning <4012> the truth <225> have erred <795>(5656), saying <3004>(5723) that the resurrection <386> is past <1096>(5755) already <2235>; and <2532> overthrow <396>(5719) the faith <4102> of some <5100>.
19. Nevertheless <3303> <3305> <5104> the foundation <2310> of God <2316> standeth <2476>(5758) sure <4731>, having <2192>(5723) this <5026> seal <4973>, The Lord <2962> knoweth <1097>(5627) them that are <5607>(5752) his <848>. And <2532>, Let <868> <0> every one <3956> that nameth <3687>(5723) the name <3686> of Christ <5547> depart <868>(5628) from <575> iniquity <93>.
20. But <1161> in <1722> a great <3173> house <3614> there are <2076>(5748) not <3756> only <3440> vessels <4632> of gold <5552> and <2532> of silver <693>, but <235> also <2532> of wood <3585> and <2532> of earth <3749>; and <2532> some <3739> <3303> to <1519> honour <5092>, and <1161> some <3739> to <1519> dishonour <819>.
21. If <1437> a man <5100> therefore <3767> purge <1571>(5661) himself <1438> from <575> these <5130>, he shall be <2071>(5704) a vessel <4632> unto <1519> honour <5092>, sanctified <37>(5772), and <2532> meet <2173> for the master's use <1203>, and prepared <2090>(5772) unto <1519> every <3956> good <18> work <2041>.
22. Flee <5343>(5720) also <1161> youthful <3512> lusts <1939>: but <1161> follow <1377>(5720) righteousness <1343>, faith <4102>, charity <26>, peace <1515>, with <3326> them that call on <1941>(5734) the Lord <2962> out of <1537> a pure <2513> heart <2588>.
23. But <1161> foolish <3474> and <2532> unlearned <521> questions <2214> avoid <3868>(5737), knowing <1492>(5761) that <3754> they do gender <1080>(5719) strifes <3163>.
24. And <1161> the servant <1401> of the Lord <2962> must <1163>(5748) not <3756> strive <3164>(5738); but <235> be <1511>(5750) gentle <2261> unto <4314> all <3956> men, apt to teach <1317>, patient <420>,
25. In <1722> meekness <4236> instructing <3811>(5723) those that oppose themselves <475>(5734); if <3379> <0> God <2316> peradventure <3379> will give <1325>(5632) them <846> repentance <3341> to <1519> the acknowledging <1922> of the truth <225>;
26. And <2532> that they may recover themselves <366>(5661) out of <1537> the snare <3803> of the devil <1228>, who are taken captive <2221>(5772) by <5259> him <846> at <1519> his <1565> will <2307>.
