REJECTION
It is a very encouraging fact that God often chooses society's outcasts to be his great leaders. It has been the same right from the beginning. Abel was despised by his brother Cain; Joseph was rejected by his brothers; Moses had to flee from Egypt for fear of his life; and here, Jephthah, the son of a prostitute, was rejected by his brothers and family and banished from receiving his inheritance. Yet God has taken all those great men because he saw qualities in them that the people around them could not see. Even Jesus was in the same position. Until he was raised from the dead he was rejected by his brothers, his nation and even his disciples, and yet he was the Son of God, the one man through the whole of history that all the people of the world should have been looking up to.
God looks for different things in people than we do. He did not chose any of Jephthah's pure blooded brothers with their precious inheritance to lead Israel, he chose Jephthah, the reject. When we find ourselves rejected by men for whatever reason, let's make sure that we have our hearts right with God and are accepted by him. Being accepted by God has great rewards.

1. And after <310> Abimelech <40> there arose <6965>(8799) to defend <3467>(8687) Israel <3478> Tola <8439> the son <1121> of Puah <6312>, the son <1121> of Dodo <1734>, a man <376> of Issachar <3485>; and he dwelt <3427>(8802) in Shamir <8069> in mount <2022> Ephraim <669>.
2. And he judged <8199>(8799) Israel <3478> twenty <6242> and three <7969> years <8141>, and died <4191>(8799), and was buried <6912>(8735) in Shamir <8069>.
3. And after <310> him arose <6965>(8799) Jair <2971>, a Gileadite <1569>, and judged <8199>(8799) Israel <3478> twenty <6242> and two <8147> years <8141>.
4. And he had thirty <7970> sons <1121> that rode <7392>(8802) on thirty <7970> ass colts <5895>, and they had thirty <7970> cities <5892>, which are called <7121>(8799) Havothjair <2334> unto this day <3117>, which are in the land <776> of Gilead <1568>.
5. And Jair <2971> died <4191>(8799), and was buried <6912>(8735) in Camon <7056>.
6. And the children <1121> of Israel <3478> did <6213>(8800) evil <7451> again <3254>(8686) in the sight <5869> of the LORD <3068>, and served <5647>(8799) Baalim <1168>, and Ashtaroth <6252>, and the gods <430> of Syria <758>, and the gods <430> of Zidon <6721>, and the gods <430> of Moab <4124>, and the gods <430> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, and the gods <430> of the Philistines <6430>, and forsook <5800>(8799) the LORD <3068>, and served <5647>(8804) not him.
7. And the anger <639> of the LORD <3068> was hot <2734>(8799) against Israel <3478>, and he sold <4376>(8799) them into the hands <3027> of the Philistines <6430>, and into the hands <3027> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>.
8. And that year <8141> they vexed <7492>(8799) and oppressed <7533>(8779) the children <1121> of Israel <3478>: eighteen <8083> <6240> years <8141>, all the children <1121> of Israel <3478> that were on the other side <5676> Jordan <3383> in the land <776> of the Amorites <567>, which is in Gilead <1568>.
9. Moreover the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> passed over <5674>(8799) Jordan <3383> to fight <3898>(8736) also against Judah <3063>, and against Benjamin <1144>, and against the house <1004> of Ephraim <669>; so that Israel <3478> was sore <3966> distressed <3334>(8799).
10. And the children <1121> of Israel <3478> cried <2199>(8799) unto the LORD <3068>, saying <559>(8800), We have sinned <2398>(8804) against thee, both because we have forsaken <5800>(8804) our God <430>, and also served <5647>(8799) Baalim <1168>.
11. And the LORD <3068> said <559>(8799) unto the children <1121> of Israel <3478>, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians <4714>, and from the Amorites <567>, from the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, and from the Philistines <6430>?
12. The Zidonians <6722> also, and the Amalekites <6002>, and the Maonites <4584>, did oppress <3905>(8804) you; and ye cried <6817>(8799) to me, and I delivered <3467>(8686) you out of their hand <3027>.
13. Yet ye have forsaken <5800>(8804) me, and served <5647>(8799) other <312> gods <430>: wherefore I will deliver <3467>(8687) you no more <3254>(8686).
14. Go <3212>(8798) and cry <2199>(8798) unto the gods <430> which ye have chosen <977>(8804); let them <1992> deliver <3467>(8686) you in the time <6256> of your tribulation <6869>.
15. And the children <1121> of Israel <3478> said <559>(8799) unto the LORD <3068>, We have sinned <2398>(8804): do <6213>(8798) thou unto us whatsoever seemeth <5869> good <2896> unto thee; deliver <5337>(8685) us only, we pray thee, this day <3117>.
16. And they put away <5493>(8686) the strange <5236> gods <430> from among <7130> them, and served <5647>(8799) the LORD <3068>: and his soul <5315> was grieved <7114>(8799) for the misery <5999> of Israel <3478>.
17. Then the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> were gathered together <6817>(8735), and encamped <2583>(8799) in Gilead <1568>. And the children <1121> of Israel <3478> assembled themselves together <622>(8735), and encamped <2583>(8799) in Mizpeh <4709>.
18. And the people <5971> and princes <8269> of Gilead <1568> said <559>(8799) one <376> to another <7453>, What man <376> is he that will begin <2490>(8686) to fight <3898>(8736) against the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>? he shall be head <7218> over all the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of Gilead <1568>.
1. Now Jephthah <3316> the Gileadite <1569> was a mighty man <1368> of valour <2428>, and he was the son <1121> of an harlot <802> <2181>(8802): and Gilead <1568> begat <3205>(8686) Jephthah <3316>.
2. And Gilead's <1568> wife <802> bare <3205>(8799) him sons <1121>; and his wife's <802> sons <1121> grew up <1431>(8799), and they thrust out <1644>(8762) Jephthah <3316>, and said <559>(8799) unto him, Thou shalt not inherit <5157>(8799) in our father's <1> house <1004>; for thou art the son <1121> of a strange <312> woman <802>.
3. Then Jephthah <3316> fled <1272>(8799) from <6440> his brethren <251>, and dwelt <3427>(8799) in the land <776> of Tob <2897>: and there were gathered <3950>(8691) vain <7386> men <582> to Jephthah <3316>, and went out <3318>(8799) with him.
4. And it came to pass in process of time <3117>, that the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> made war <3898>(8735) against Israel <3478>.
5. And it was so, that when the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> made war <3898>(8738) against Israel <3478>, the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568> went <3212>(8799) to fetch <3947>(8800) Jephthah <3316> out of the land <776> of Tob <2897>:
6. And they said <559>(8799) unto Jephthah <3316>, Come <3212>(8798), and be our captain <7101>, that we may fight <3898>(8735) with the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>.
7. And Jephthah <3316> said <559>(8799) unto the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568>, Did not ye hate <8130>(8804) me, and expel <1644>(8762) me out of my father's <1> house <1004>? and why are ye come <935>(8804) unto me now when ye are in distress <6887>(8804)?
8. And the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568> said <559>(8799) unto Jephthah <3316>, Therefore we turn again <7725>(8804) to thee now, that thou mayest go <1980>(8804) with us, and fight <3898>(8738) against the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, and be our head <7218> over all the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of Gilead <1568>.
9. And Jephthah <3316> said <559>(8799) unto the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568>, If ye bring me home again <7725>(8688) to fight <3898>(8736) against the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, and the LORD <3068> deliver <5414>(8804) them before <6440> me, shall I be your head <7218>?
10. And the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568> said <559>(8799) unto Jephthah <3316>, The LORD <3068> be witness <8085>(8802) between us, if we do <6213>(8799) not so according to thy words <1697>.
11. Then Jephthah <3316> went <3212>(8799) with the elders <2205> of Gilead <1568>, and the people <5971> made <7760>(8799) him head <7218> and captain <7101> over them: and Jephthah <3316> uttered <1696>(8762) all his words <1697> before <6440> the LORD <3068> in Mizpeh <4709>.
12. And Jephthah <3316> sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> unto the king <4428> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, saying <559>(8800), What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come <935>(8804) against me to fight <3898>(8736) in my land <776>?
13. And the king <4428> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> answered <559>(8799) unto the messengers <4397> of Jephthah <3316>, Because Israel <3478> took away <3947>(8804) my land <776>, when they came up <5927>(8800) out of Egypt <4714>, from Arnon <769> even unto Jabbok <2999>, and unto Jordan <3383>: now therefore restore those lands again <7725>(8685) peaceably <7965>.
14. And Jephthah <3316> sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> again <3254>(8686) unto the king <4428> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>:
15. And said <559>(8799) unto him, Thus saith <559>(8804) Jephthah <3316>, Israel <3478> took not away <3947>(8804) the land <776> of Moab <4124>, nor the land <776> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>:
16. But when Israel <3478> came up <5927>(8800) from Egypt <4714>, and walked <3212>(8799) through the wilderness <4057> unto the Red <5488> sea <3220>, and came <935>(8799) to Kadesh <6946>;
17. Then Israel <3478> sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> unto the king <4428> of Edom <123>, saying <559>(8800), Let me, I pray thee, pass through <5674>(8799) thy land <776>: but the king <4428> of Edom <123> would not hearken <8085>(8804) thereto. And in like manner they sent <7971>(8804) unto the king <4428> of Moab <4124>: but he would <14>(8804) not consent: and Israel <3478> abode <3427>(8799) in Kadesh <6946>.
18. Then they went along <3212>(8799) through the wilderness <4057>, and compassed <5437>(8799) the land <776> of Edom <123>, and the land <776> of Moab <4124>, and came <935>(8799) by the east side <4217> <8121> of the land <776> of Moab <4124>, and pitched <2583>(8799) on the other side <5676> of Arnon <769>, but came <935>(8804) not within the border <1366> of Moab <4124>: for Arnon <769> was the border <1366> of Moab <4124>.
19. And Israel <3478> sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> unto Sihon <5511> king <4428> of the Amorites <567>, the king <4428> of Heshbon <2809>; and Israel <3478> said <559>(8799) unto him, Let us pass <5674>(8799), we pray thee, through thy land <776> into <5704> my place <4725>.
20. But Sihon <5511> trusted <539>(8689) not Israel <3478> to pass <5674>(8800) through his coast <1366>: but Sihon <5511> gathered <622> <0> all his people <5971> together <622>(8799), and pitched <2583>(8799) in Jahaz <3096>, and fought <3898>(8735) against Israel <3478>.
21. And the LORD <3068> God <430> of Israel <3478> delivered <5414>(8799) Sihon <5511> and all his people <5971> into the hand <3027> of Israel <3478>, and they smote <5221>(8686) them: so Israel <3478> possessed <3423>(8799) all the land <776> of the Amorites <567>, the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of that country <776>.
22. And they possessed <3423>(8799) all the coasts <1366> of the Amorites <567>, from Arnon <769> even unto Jabbok <2999>, and from the wilderness <4057> even unto Jordan <3383>.
23. So now the LORD <3068> God <430> of Israel <3478> hath dispossessed <3423>(8689) the Amorites <567> from before <6440> his people <5971> Israel <3478>, and shouldest thou possess <3423>(8799) it?
24. Wilt not thou possess <3423>(8799) that which Chemosh <3645> thy god <430> giveth thee to possess <3423>(8686)? So whomsoever the LORD <3068> our God <430> shall drive out <3423>(8689) from before <6440> us, them will we possess <3423>(8799).
25. And now art thou any thing better <2896> than Balak <1111> the son <1121> of Zippor <6834>, king <4428> of Moab <4124>? did he ever <7378>(8800) strive <7378>(8804) against Israel <3478>, or did he ever <3898>(8736) fight <3898>(8738) against them,
26. While Israel <3478> dwelt <3427>(8800) in Heshbon <2809> and her towns <1323>, and in Aroer <6177> and her towns <1323>, and in all the cities <5892> that be along by the coasts <3027> of Arnon <769>, three <7969> hundred <3967> years <8141>? why therefore did ye not recover <5337>(8689) them within that time <6256>?
27. Wherefore I have not sinned <2398>(8804) against thee, but thou doest <6213>(8802) <853> me wrong <7451> to war <3898>(8736) against me: the LORD <3068> the Judge <8199>(8802) be judge <8199>(8799) this day <3117> between the children <1121> of Israel <3478> and the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>.
28. Howbeit the king <4428> of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> hearkened <8085>(8804) not unto the words <1697> of Jephthah <3316> which he sent <7971>(8804) him.
29. Then the Spirit <7307> of the LORD <3068> came upon Jephthah <3316>, and he passed over <5674>(8799) Gilead <1568>, and Manasseh <4519>, and passed over <5674>(8799) Mizpeh <4708> of Gilead <1568>, and from Mizpeh <4708> of Gilead <1568> he passed over <5674>(8804) unto the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>.
30. And Jephthah <3316> vowed <5087>(8799) a vow <5088> unto the LORD <3068>, and said <559>(8799), If thou shalt without fail <5414>(8800) deliver <5414>(8799) the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> into mine hands <3027>,
31. Then it shall be, that whatsoever <3318>(8802) cometh forth <3318>(8799) of the doors <1817> of my house <1004> to meet <7125>(8800) me, when I return <7725>(8800) in peace <7965> from the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>, shall surely be the LORD'S <3068>, and I will offer it up <5927>(8689) for a burnt offering <5930>.
32. So Jephthah <3316> passed over <5674>(8799) unto the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> to fight <3898>(8736) against them; and the LORD <3068> delivered <5414>(8799) them into his hands <3027>.
33. And he smote <5221>(8686) them from Aroer <6177>, even till thou come <935>(8800) to Minnith <4511>, even twenty <6242> cities <5892>, and unto the plain <58> of the vineyards <3754>(8677) <64>, with a very <3966> great <1419> slaughter <4347>. Thus the children <1121> of Ammon <5983> were subdued <3665>(8735) before <6440> the children <1121> of Israel <3478>.
34. And Jephthah <3316> came <935>(8799) to Mizpeh <4709> unto his house <1004>, and, behold, his daughter <1323> came out <3318>(8802) to meet <7125>(8800) him with timbrels <8596> and with dances <4246>: and she was his only child <3173>; beside her he had neither son <1121> nor <176> daughter <1323>.
35. And it came to pass, when he saw <7200>(8800) her, that he rent <7167>(8799) his clothes <899>, and said <559>(8799), Alas <162>, my daughter <1323>! thou hast brought <3766> <0> me very <3766>(8689) low <3766>(8687), and thou art one of them that trouble <5916>(8802) me: for I have opened <6475>(8804) my mouth <6310> unto the LORD <3068>, and I cannot <3201>(8799) go back <7725>(8800).
36. And she said <559>(8799) unto him, My father <1>, if thou hast opened <6475>(8804) thy mouth <6310> unto the LORD <3068>, do <6213>(8798) to me according to that which <834> hath proceeded <3318>(8804) out of thy mouth <6310>; forasmuch <310> as the LORD <3068> hath taken <6213>(8804) vengeance <5360> for thee of thine enemies <341>(8802), even of the children <1121> of Ammon <5983>.
37. And she said <559>(8799) unto her father <1>, Let this thing <1697> be done <6213>(8735) for me: let me alone <7503>(8685) two <8147> months <2320>, that I may go up <3212>(8799) and down <3381>(8804) upon the mountains <2022>, and bewail <1058>(8799) my virginity <1331>, I and my fellows <7464>(8675) <7474>.
38. And he said <559>(8799), Go <3212>(8798). And he sent her away <7971>(8799) for two <8147> months <2320>: and she went <3212>(8799) with her companions <7464>, and bewailed <1058>(8799) her virginity <1331> upon the mountains <2022>.
39. And it came to pass at the end <7093> of two <8147> months <2320>, that she returned <7725>(8799) unto her father <1>, who did <6213>(8799) with her according to his vow <5088> which he had vowed <5087>(8804): and she knew <3045>(8804) no man <376>. And it was a custom <2706> in Israel <3478>,
40. That the daughters <1323> of Israel <3478> went <3212>(8799) yearly <3117> <3117> to lament <8567>(8763) the daughter <1323> of Jephthah <3316> the Gileadite <1569> four <702> days <3117> in a year <8141>.

QUESTIONS
Sennacherib's verbal attack on Jerusalem was probably, and almost certainly intended to be, just as deadly as a physical attack. In the hearing of all the people, Sennacherib's field commander attempted to demoralise the people of Jerusalem in the confidence they had in their own strength, in Hezekiah, and in the LORD their God. It is hard to know how strong the personal faith of each individual who heard this attack was, and whether it would damage their faith or not, but the field commander's words must have put a dent in their spiritual armour.
From time to time people will attack our faith or our church. Sometimes those attacks will bounce off us because our faith in those areas is strong. But at other times they will find us unprotected and can leave us questioning our faith even to the extent of wondering whether God exists at all. Attacks like this will come, whether we like it or not.
Taking Isaiah 36 all by its self leaves us with no solid answers to the verbal attack of Sennacherib. Perhaps there is a reason for this. Is it so we are left to wonder how they would react? In our wondering how they would react and whether it would impact their faith, we should also think about our reaction in similar circumstances. What if someone really touched a nerve with us? What if they degraded our faith and what they said almost made sense?
What would we think if we were in a similar position?

Isa 36.
There are some hints throughout this chapter that the field commander (i.e. Rabshakeh) is a renegade Jew. What are some of those hints?
The following comes from bro. Harry Whittaker's book Hezekiah, the Great.
1. He was fluent in Hebrew (v. 11).
2. He knew that Hezekiah had pushed through a sweeping religious reformation. v. 7 - "Isn't he (Yahweh) the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You must worship before his altar?'"
3. 2 Kings 18:25 - "The LORD has said unto me, Go up against this land and destroy it." This claim to have a mandate from the God of Israel to invade the Land would be ludicrous if it were not strictly true. For this had been the burden of Isaiah's prophecy (ch. 10:5-7). "Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of may anger, in whose hand is the club of my wrath. I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me...But this is not what he intends...his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations." So Rabshakeh had detailed knowledge of Isaiah's prophecies!
4. And Micah's also! v. 16 - "....This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then
every one of you will eat from his own vine and fig tree..." precisely as Micah had foretold in his Messianic prophecy (
Mic 4:4).
5. Also the promise of a new home in "a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards" reads like an allusion to Moses' description of the Promised land (see
Deut 8:7,8).
6. Another allusion to an earlier Messianic prophecy, spoken in the first instance with reference to Hezekiah's godliness and promise - 2 Kings 18: 19,20 - "Tell Hezekiah...You say, I have counsel and strength for the war." Isaiah had promised "the spirit of counsel and might" (the same words in Hebrew) resting on the "rod out of the stem of Jesse" (
Isa 11:1,2).
If only Rabshakeh had known it, from the moment he began his tirade about the futility of faith in a powerless Yahweh, the fate of Sennacherib and his "invincible" army was sealed.

1. Now it came to pass in the fourteenth <702> <6240> year <8141> of king <4428> Hezekiah <2396>, that Sennacherib <5576> king <4428> of Assyria <804> came up <5927>(8804) against all the defenced <1219>(8803) cities <5892> of Judah <3063>, and took <8610>(8799) them.
2. And the king <4428> of Assyria <804> sent <7971>(8799) Rabshakeh <7262> from Lachish <3923> to Jerusalem <3389> unto king <4428> Hezekiah <2396> with a great <3515> army <2426>. And he stood <5975>(8799) by the conduit <8585> of the upper <5945> pool <1295> in the highway <4546> of the fuller's <3526>(8801) field <7704>.
3. Then came forth <3318>(8799) unto him Eliakim <471>, Hilkiah's <2518> son <1121>, which was over the house <1004>, and Shebna <7644> the scribe <5608>(8802), and Joah <3098>, Asaph's <623> son <1121>, the recorder <2142>(8688).
4. And Rabshakeh <7262> said <559>(8799) unto them, Say <559>(8798) ye now to Hezekiah <2396>, Thus saith <559>(8804) the great <1419> king <4428>, the king <4428> of Assyria <804>, What confidence <986> is this wherein thou trustest <982>(8804)?
5. I say <559>(8804), sayest thou, (but they are but vain <8193> words <1697>) I have counsel <6098> and strength <1369> for war <4421>: now on whom dost thou trust <982>(8804), that thou rebellest <4775>(8804) against me?
6. Lo, thou trustest <982>(8804) in the staff <4938> of this broken <7533>(8803) reed <7070>, on Egypt <4714>; whereon if a man <376> lean <5564>(8735), it will go <935>(8804) into his hand <3709>, and pierce <5344>(8804) it: so is Pharaoh <6547> king <4428> of Egypt <4714> to all that trust <982>(8802) in him.
7. But if thou say <559>(8799) to me, We trust <982>(8804) in the LORD <3068> our God <430>: is it not he, whose high places <1116> and whose altars <4196> Hezekiah <2396> hath taken away <5493>(8689), and said <559>(8799) to Judah <3063> and to Jerusalem <3389>, Ye shall worship <7812>(8691) before <6440> this altar <4196>?
8. Now therefore give pledges <6148>(8690), I pray thee, to my master <113> the king <4428> of Assyria <804>, and I will give <5414>(8799) thee two thousand <505> horses <5483>, if thou be able <3201>(8799) on thy part to set <5414>(8800) riders <7392>(8802) upon them.
9. How then wilt thou turn away <7725>(8686) the face <6440> of one <259> captain <6346> of the least <6996> of my master's <113> servants <5650>, and put thy trust <982>(8799) on Egypt <4714> for chariots <7393> and for horsemen <6571>?
10. And am I now come up <5927>(8804) without <1107> the LORD <3068> against this land <776> to destroy <7843>(8687) it? the LORD <3068> said <559>(8804) unto me, Go up <5927>(8798) against this land <776>, and destroy <7843>(8685) it.
11. Then said <559>(8799) Eliakim <471> and Shebna <7644> and Joah <3098> unto Rabshakeh <7262>, Speak <1696>(8761), I pray thee, unto thy servants <5650> in the Syrian language <762>; for we understand <8085>(8802) it: and speak <1696>(8762) not to us in the Jews' language <3066>, in the ears <241> of the people <5971> that are on the wall <2346>.
12. But Rabshakeh <7262> said <559>(8799), Hath my master <113> sent <7971>(8804) me to thy master <113> and to thee to speak <1696>(8763) these words <1697>? hath he not sent me to the men <582> that sit <3427>(8802) upon the wall <2346>, that they may eat <398>(8800) their own dung <2716>(8676) <6675>, and drink <8354>(8800) their own piss <4325> <7272>(8675) <7890> with you?
13. Then Rabshakeh <7262> stood <5975>(8799), and cried <7121>(8799) with a loud <1419> voice <6963> in the Jews' language <3066>, and said <559>(8799), Hear <8085>(8798) ye the words <1697> of the great <1419> king <4428>, the king <4428> of Assyria <804>.
14. Thus saith <559>(8804) the king <4428>, Let not Hezekiah <2396> deceive <5377>(8686) you: for he shall not be able <3201>(8799) to deliver <5337>(8687) you.
15. Neither let Hezekiah <2396> make you trust <982>(8686) in the LORD <3068>, saying <559>(8800), The LORD <3068> will surely <5337>(8687) deliver <5337>(8686) us: this city <5892> shall not be delivered <5414>(8735) into the hand <3027> of the king <4428> of Assyria <804>.
16. Hearken <8085>(8799) not to Hezekiah <2396>: for thus saith <559>(8804) the king <4428> of Assyria <804>, Make <6213>(8798) an agreement with me by a present <1293>, and come out <3318>(8798) to me: and eat <398>(8798) ye every one <376> of his vine <1612>, and every one <376> of his fig tree <8384>, and drink <8354>(8798) ye every one <376> the waters <4325> of his own cistern <953>;
17. Until I come <935>(8800) and take you away <3947>(8804) to a land <776> like your own land <776>, a land <776> of corn <1715> and wine <8492>, a land <776> of bread <3899> and vineyards <3754>.
18. Beware lest Hezekiah <2396> persuade <5496>(8686) you, saying <559>(8800), The LORD <3068> will deliver <5337>(8686) us. Hath any <376> of the gods <430> of the nations <1471> delivered <5337>(8689) his land <776> out of the hand <3027> of the king <4428> of Assyria <804>?
19. Where are the gods <430> of Hamath <2574> and Arphad <774>? where are the gods <430> of Sepharvaim <5617>? and have they delivered <5337>(8689) Samaria <8111> out of my hand <3027>?
20. Who are they among all the gods <430> of these lands <776>, that have delivered <5337>(8689) their land <776> out of my hand <3027>, that the LORD <3068> should deliver <5337>(8686) Jerusalem <3389> out of my hand <3027>?
21. But they held their peace <2790>(8686), and answered <6030>(8804) him not a word <1697>: for the king's <4428> commandment <4687> was, saying <559>(8800), Answer <6030>(8799) him not.
22. Then came <935>(8799) Eliakim <471>, the son <1121> of Hilkiah <2518>, that was over the household <1004>, and Shebna <7644> the scribe <5608>(8802), and Joah <3098>, the son <1121> of Asaph <623>, the recorder <2142>(8688), to Hezekiah <2396> with their clothes <899> rent <7167>(8803), and told <5046>(8686) him the words <1697> of Rabshakeh <7262>.

The cornerstone was placed at the junction of two walls. Being at the base, it supported the building of two adjacent walls to become true and stable. As one wall ended, the other began.
Jesus is represented by the cornerstone. The two walls embody the old and new covenants. Both covenants have Jesus as their foundation - the new continues where the old finished.

Today's readings.. (Judges 10,11), (Isaiah 36), (1 Peter 2)
Our reading of 1 Peter Ch. 2 begins with a list of those things which a true follower of Christ should “put away” - we must do everything we can to get rid of such ways of thinking.
Those who have been brought up from childhood should never have possessed them! But were they fully conscious of the potential of these things to 'invade' and start to possess their minds? It is vital that our minds are 'possessed' by positive attitudes: there is no 'in between' position - in God's eyes.
Jesus once told a parable about this (Matthew 12 v.43-45); of one who got rid of an unclean spirit (attitude) and his mind was clean, but he or she neglected to put anything in its place! The end result was this person's mind was filled with 7 unclean spirits, “and the last state of that person was worse that the first.” A cryptic statement concludes the parable, “so also will it be with this evil generation”!
That final generation of the Jewish nation was largely destroyed when Jerusalem was destroyed, but surely the same is now applying to the last generation of the Gentiles! Our minds are made to be put to use - and this world today with all its abundant methods of communication is ready at every twist and turn to penetrate our minds with useless thoughts, or, worse still, with godless fleshly thoughts.
With this in mind we specially note Peter's advice that in coming to Christ we are “newborn infants” and that our attitude then is to “long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it, you may grow up to salvation” [v.2] so that you are “in the sight of God, chosen and precious,” [v.4], and you recognise yourselves to be “living stones” that are “being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood” [v.5]
The final stage is to realize we are “a holy nation, a people for his own possession” [v.9]. Peter goes on to tell them they are “sojourners and exiles” and not citizens of the world and as such must “abstain from the passions of the flesh which wage war against your soul” [v.11]. The evil spirits are ever ready to gain entry again if we give them a chance, so it is vital we fill the house of our mind with positive spiritual things every day.
Maybe some, before they commit themselves to Christ, think they can indulge in a little of the things of the world. This can be fatal, it will leave a stain on their minds which only a total heartfelt mood of conversion can overcome, such as those who have had no spiritual upbringing experience as they, with really great joy, see the wondrous light God offers and “grow up to salvation.”

2. As <5613> newborn <738> babes <1025>, desire <1971>(5657) the sincere <97> milk <1051> of the word <3050>, that <2443> ye may grow <837>(5686) thereby <1722> <846>:
3. If so be <1512> ye have tasted <1089>(5662) that <3754> the Lord <2962> is gracious <5543>.
4. To <4314> whom <3739> coming <4334>(5740), as unto a living <2198>(5723) stone <3037>, disallowed <593>(5772) indeed <3303> of <5259> men <444>, but <1161> chosen <1588> of <3844> God <2316>, and precious <1784>,
5. Ye <846> also <2532>, as <5613> lively <2198>(5723) stones <3037>, are built up <3618>(5743) a spiritual <4152> house <3624>, an holy <40> priesthood <2406>, to offer up <399>(5658) spiritual <4152> sacrifices <2378>, acceptable <2144> to God <2316> by <1223> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>.
6. Wherefore <1352> also <2532> it is contained <4023>(5719) in <1722> the scripture <1124>, Behold <2400>(5628), I lay <5087>(5719) in <1722> Sion <4622> a chief corner <204> stone <3037>, elect <1588>, precious <1784>: and <2532> he that believeth <4100>(5723) on <1909> him <846> shall <2617> <0> not be <3364> confounded <2617>(5686).
7. Unto you <5213> therefore <3767> which <3588> believe <4100>(5723) he is precious <5092>: but <1161> unto them which be disobedient <544>(5723), the stone <3037> which <3739> the builders <3618>(5723) disallowed <593>(5656), the same <3778> is made <1096>(5675) <1519> the head <2776> of the corner <1137>,
8. And <2532> a stone <3037> of stumbling <4348>, and <2532> a rock <4073> of offence <4625>, even to them which <3739> stumble <4350>(5719) at the word <3056>, being disobedient <544>(5723): whereunto <1519> <3739> also <2532> they were appointed <5087>(5681).
9. But <1161> ye <5210> are a chosen <1588> generation <1085>, a royal <934> priesthood <2406>, an holy <40> nation <1484>, a peculiar <1519> <4047> people <2992>; that <3704> ye should shew forth <1804>(5661) the praises <703> of him who hath called <2564>(5660) you <5209> out of <1537> darkness <4655> into <1519> his <848> marvellous <2298> light <5457>:
10. Which <3588> in time past <4218> were not <3756> a people <2992>, but <1161> are now <3568> the people <2992> of God <2316>: which <3588> had <1653> <0> not <3756> obtained mercy <1653>(5772), but <1161> now <3568> have obtained mercy <1653>(5685).
11. Dearly beloved <27>, I beseech <3870>(5719) you as <5613> strangers <3941> and <2532> pilgrims <3927>, abstain from <567>(5733) fleshly <4559> lusts <1939>, which <3748> war <4754>(5731) against <2596> the soul <5590>;
12. Having <2192>(5723) your <5216> conversation <391> honest <2570> among <1722> the Gentiles <1484>: that <2443>, whereas <1722> <3739> they speak against <2635>(5719) you <5216> as <5613> evildoers <2555>, they may <1392> <0> by <1537> your good <2570> works <2041>, which they shall behold <2029>(5660), glorify <1392>(5661) God <2316> in <1722> the day <2250> of visitation <1984>.
13. <3767> Submit yourselves <5293>(5649) to every <3956> ordinance <2937> of man <442> for <1223> the Lord's sake <2962>: whether it be <1535> to the king <935>, as <5613> supreme <5242>(5723);
14. Or <1535> unto governors <2232>, as <5613> unto them that are sent <3992>(5746) by <1223> him <846> for <1519> <3303> the punishment <1557> of evildoers <2555>, and <1161> for the praise <1868> of them that do well <17>.
15. For <3754> so <3779> is <2076>(5748) the will <2307> of God <2316>, that with well doing <15>(5723) ye may put to silence <5392>(5721) the ignorance <56> of foolish <878> men <444>:
16. As <5613> free <1658>, and <2532> not <3361> using <2192>(5723) your liberty <1657> for <5613> a cloke <1942> of maliciousness <2549>, but <235> as <5613> the servants <1401> of God <2316>.
17. Honour <5091>(5657) all <3956> men. Love <25>(5720) the brotherhood <81>. Fear <5399>(5737) God <2316>. Honour <5091>(5720) the king <935>.
18. Servants <3610>, be subject <5293>(5746) to your masters <1203> with <1722> all <3956> fear <5401>; not <3756> only <3440> to the good <18> and <2532> gentle <1933>, but <235> also <2532> to the froward <4646>.
19. For <1063> this <5124> is thankworthy <5485>, if <1487> a man <5100> for <1223> conscience <4893> toward God <2316> endure <5297>(5719) grief <3077>, suffering <3958>(5723) wrongfully <95>.
20. For <1063> what <4169> glory <2811> is it, if <1487>, when <2532> ye be buffeted <2852>(5746) for your faults <264>(5723), ye shall take it patiently <5278>(5692)? but <235> if <1487>, when ye do well <15>(5723), and <2532> suffer <3958>(5723) for it, ye take it patiently <5278>(5692), this <5124> is acceptable <5485> with <3844> God <2316>.
21. For <1063> even <1519> hereunto <5124> were ye called <2564>(5681): because <3754> Christ <5547> also <2532> suffered <3958>(5627) for <5228> us <2257>, leaving <5277>(5723) us <2254> an example <5261>, that <2443> ye should follow <1872>(5661) his <846> steps <2487>:
22. Who <3739> did <4160>(5656) no <3756> sin <266>, neither <3761> was guile <1388> found <2147>(5681) in <1722> his <846> mouth <4750>:
23. Who <3739>, when he was reviled <3058>(5746), reviled <486> <0> not <3756> again <486>(5707); when he suffered <3958>(5723), he threatened <546>(5707) not <3756>; but <1161> committed <3860>(5707) himself to him that judgeth <2919>(5723) righteously <1346>:
24. Who <3739> his own self <846> bare <399>(5656) our <2257> sins <266> in <1722> his own <848> body <4983> on <1909> the tree <3586>, that <2443> we <2198> <0>, being dead <581>(5637) to sins <266>, should live <2198>(5661) unto righteousness <1343>: by <3739> whose <846> stripes <3468> ye were healed <2390>(5681).
25. For <1063> ye were <2258>(5713) as <5613> sheep <4263> going astray <4105>(5746); but <235> are <1994> <0> now <3568> returned <1994>(5648) unto <1909> the Shepherd <4166> and <2532> Bishop <1985> of your <5216> souls <5590>.
