God showed how displeased He was with Israel, when the ark was returned. The town on Bethshemesh
in Judah's territory, should not have touched the ark. But they did, and 53,000 men died.

The word translated "Emerods" in the KJV is "tekhore" 02914, which can mean tumours or haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids, although often painful, are not usually life threatening. The fact that these tumours are linked with the mice, and that widespread disease, suffering & death was the result, makes one wonder whether it wasn't a form of the "plague" which struck Europe/UK repeatedly over the centuries. The bug, Yersinia pestis, which caused the infection & death, was then carried by rats.

The five principal cities of the Philistines, Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, were ruled by five lords (Josh 13:3). Yahweh's opposition to them here parallels that of Goliath and his brothers, which would occur later. David, who slew Goliath, knew that the giant had four brothers which would account for his selection of five stones (1Sam 17:40). Subsequently, Goliath's brothers were also slain (2Sam 21:16-21).

The Philistines had witnessed and accepted the supremacy of the God of Israel over their own god Dagon. And yet, it did not spur them to alter their religious affiliation. Furthermore, in later conflicts with the Israelites, they had forgotten the supreme power of Yahweh and had to be reminded of it again. Unfortunately, the same pattern of forgetfulness applied to the Israelites also.

5:6 The specific mention of ‘Jebusites’ who were the inhabitants causes us to remember that in Judg 1:21 the Benjamites did not drive out the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Indicating that David was more focused on the plan of God than were the Benjamites and in particular Saul when he was king.

The lesson of what happened in chapter 5 is that God cannot be worshipped in whatever way we like. We cannot take God and reduce Him to the size of a box and take Him from one place to another as we wish. For us Gentiles He has decreed that those who worship Him must do so through the Priesthood of the son of David, Jesus Christ. Who are we try to do it differently?
Rob de Jongh [Mountsorrel (UK)] Comment added in 2015 Reply to Rob
Bet-shemesh was a Levitical city, appointed as a city of refuge (Joshua 21:13-16). So the men of the city had NO excuse. As Levites, they knew how the Ark should be handled, but they sought to satisfy their curiosity rather than honour the God of Israel. The Ark was the symbol of God's presence with Israel, for His glory shone from between the cherubim. What lesson for us! In this casual, self-centred world, let us remember to look to He who is truly Lord of all the earth.

5:6.11 In saying that that hand of God was heavy <<3513> we see the same word that was used in the previous chapter to speak of Eli – 1Sam 4:188. The ironic play on words teaches that God is not constrained by a “heavy” man whose sons were godless.

1. And the Philistines <6430> took <3947>(8804) the ark <727> of God <430>, and brought <935>(8686) it from Ebenezer <72> unto Ashdod <795>.
2. When the Philistines <6430> took <3947>(8799) the ark <727> of God <430>, they brought <935>(8686) it into the house <1004> of Dagon <1712>, and set <3322>(8686) it by <681> Dagon <1712>.
3. And when they of Ashdod <796> arose early <7925>(8686) on the morrow <4283>, behold, Dagon <1712> was fallen <5307>(8802) upon his face <6440> to the earth <776> before <6440> the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>. And they took <3947>(8799) Dagon <1712>, and set <7725> <0> him in his place <4725> again <7725>(8686).
4. And when they arose early <7925>(8686) on the morrow <4283> morning <1242>, behold, Dagon <1712> was fallen <5307>(8802) upon his face <6440> to the ground <776> before <6440> the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>; and the head <7218> of Dagon <1712> and both <8147> the palms <3709> of his hands <3027> were cut off <3772>(8803) upon the threshold <4670>; only the stump of Dagon <1712> was left <7604>(8738) to him.
5. Therefore neither the priests <3548> of Dagon <1712>, nor any that come <935>(8802) into Dagon's <1712> house <1004>, tread <1869>(8799) on the threshold <4670> of Dagon <1712> in Ashdod <795> unto this day <3117>.
6. But the hand <3027> of the LORD <3068> was heavy <3513>(8799) upon them of Ashdod <796>, and he destroyed <8074>(8686) them, and smote <5221>(8686) them with emerods <2914>(8675) <6076>, even Ashdod <795> and the coasts <1366> thereof.
7. And when the men <582> of Ashdod <795> saw <7200>(8799) that it was so, they said <559>(8804), The ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478> shall not abide <3427>(8799) with us: for his hand <3027> is sore <7185>(8804) upon us, and upon Dagon <1712> our god <430>.
8. They sent <7971>(8799) therefore and gathered <622>(8799) all the lords <5633> of the Philistines <6430> unto them, and said <559>(8799), What shall we do <6213>(8799) with the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478>? And they answered <559>(8799), Let the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478> be carried about <5437>(8735) unto Gath <1661>. And they carried <5437> <0> the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478> about <5437>(8686) thither.
9. And it was so, that, after <310> they had carried it about <5437>(8689), the hand <3027> of the LORD <3068> was against the city <5892> with a very <3966> great <1419> destruction <4103>: and he smote <5221>(8686) the men <582> of the city <5892>, both small <6996> and great <1419>, and they had emerods <2914>(8675) <6076> in their secret parts <8368>(8735).
10. Therefore they sent <7971>(8762) the ark <727> of God <430> to Ekron <6138>. And it came to pass, as the ark <727> of God <430> came <935>(8800) to Ekron <6138>, that the Ekronites <6139> cried out <2199>(8799), saying <559>(8800), They have brought about <5437>(8689) the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478> to us, to slay <4191>(8687) us and our people <5971>.
11. So they sent <7971>(8799) and gathered together <622>(8799) all the lords <5633> of the Philistines <6430>, and said <559>(8799), Send away <7971>(8761) the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478>, and let it go again <7725>(8799) to his own place <4725>, that it slay <4191>(8686) us not, and our people <5971>: for there was a deadly <4194> destruction <4103> throughout all the city <5892>; the hand <3027> of God <430> was very <3966> heavy <3513>(8804) there.
12. And the men <582> that died <4191>(8804) not were smitten <5221>(8717) with the emerods <2914>(8675) <6076>: and the cry <7775> of the city <5892> went up <5927>(8799) to heaven <8064>.
1. And the ark <727> of the LORD <3068> was in the country <7704> of the Philistines <6430> seven <7651> months <2320>.
2. And the Philistines <6430> called <7121>(8799) for the priests <3548> and the diviners <7080>(8802), saying <559>(8800), What shall we do <6213>(8799) to the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>? tell <3045>(8685) us wherewith we shall send <7971>(8762) it to his place <4725>.
3. And they said <559>(8799), If ye send away <7971>(8764) the ark <727> of the God <430> of Israel <3478>, send <7971>(8762) it not empty <7387>; but in any wise <7725>(8687) return <7725>(8686) him a trespass offering <817>: then ye shall be healed <7495>(8735), and it shall be known <3045>(8738) to you why his hand <3027> is not removed <5493>(8799) from you.
4. Then said <559>(8799) they, What shall be the trespass offering <817> which we shall return <7725>(8686) to him? They answered <559>(8799), Five <2568> golden <2091> emerods <2914>(8675) <6076>, and five <2568> golden <2091> mice <5909>, according to the number <4557> of the lords <5633> of the Philistines <6430>: for one <259> plague <4046> was on you all, and on your lords <5633>.
5. Wherefore ye shall make <6213>(8804) images <6754> of your emerods <2914>(8675) <6076>, and images <6754> of your mice <5909> that mar <7843>(8688) the land <776>; and ye shall give <5414>(8804) glory <3519> unto the God <430> of Israel <3478>: peradventure he will lighten <7043>(8686) his hand <3027> from off you, and from off your gods <430>, and from off your land <776>.
6. Wherefore then do ye harden <3513>(8762) your hearts <3824>, as the Egyptians <4714> and Pharaoh <6547> hardened <3513>(8765) their hearts <3820>? when he had wrought wonderfully <5953>(8694) among them, did they not let the people go <7971>(8762), and they departed <3212>(8799)?
7. Now therefore make <6213>(8798) a <259> new <2319> cart <5699>, and take <3947>(8798) two <8147> milch <5763>(8802) kine <6510>, on which there hath come <5927>(8804) no yoke <5923>, and tie <631>(8804) the kine <6510> to the cart <5699>, and bring <7725>(8689) their calves <1121> home <1004> from them <310>:
8. And take <3947>(8804) the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>, and lay <5414>(8804) it upon the cart <5699>; and put <7760>(8799) the jewels <3627> of gold <2091>, which ye return <7725>(8689) him for a trespass offering <817>, in a coffer <712> by the side <6654> thereof; and send it away <7971>(8765), that it may go <1980>(8804).
9. And see <7200>(8804), if it goeth up <5927>(8799) by the way <1870> of his own coast <1366> to Bethshemesh <1053>, then he hath done <6213>(8804) us this great <1419> evil <7451>: but if not, then we shall know <3045>(8804) that it is not his hand <3027> that smote <5060>(8804) us: it was a chance <4745> that happened to us <1961>(8804).
10. And the men <582> did so <6213>(8799); and took <3947>(8799) two <8147> milch <5763>(8802) kine <6510>, and tied <631>(8799) them to the cart <5699>, and shut up <3607>(8804) their calves <1121> at home <1004>:
11. And they laid <7760>(8799) the ark <727> of the LORD <3068> upon the cart <5699>, and the coffer <712> with the mice <5909> of gold <2091> and the images <6754> of their emerods <2914>.
12. And the kine <6510> took the straight <3474>(8799) way <1870> to the way <1870> of Bethshemesh <1053>, and went along <1980>(8804) the highway <4546> <259>, lowing <1600>(8800) as they went <1980>(8800), and turned not aside <5493>(8804) to the right hand <3225> or to the left <8040>; and the lords <5633> of the Philistines <6430> went <1980>(8802) after <310> them unto the border <1366> of Bethshemesh <1053>.
13. And they of Bethshemesh <1053> were reaping <7114>(8802) their wheat <2406> harvest <7105> in the valley <6010>: and they lifted up <5375>(8799) their eyes <5869>, and saw <7200>(8799) the ark <727>, and rejoiced <8055>(8799) to see <7200>(8800) it.
14. And the cart <5699> came <935>(8802) into the field <7704> of Joshua <3091>, a Bethshemite <1030>, and stood <5975>(8799) there, where there was a great <1419> stone <68>: and they clave <1234>(8762) the wood <6086> of the cart <5699>, and offered <5927>(8689) the kine <6510> a burnt offering <5930> unto the LORD <3068>.
15. And the Levites <3881> took down <3381>(8689) the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>, and the coffer <712> that was with it, wherein the jewels <3627> of gold <2091> were, and put <7760>(8799) them on the great <1419> stone <68>: and the men <582> of Bethshemesh <1053> offered <5927>(8689) burnt offerings <5930> and sacrificed <2076>(8799) sacrifices <2077> the same day <3117> unto the LORD <3068>.
16. And when the five <2568> lords <5633> of the Philistines <6430> had seen <7200>(8804) it, they returned <7725>(8799) to Ekron <6138> the same day <3117>.
17. And these are the golden <2091> emerods <2914> which the Philistines <6430> returned <7725>(8689) for a trespass offering <817> unto the LORD <3068>; for Ashdod <795> one <259>, for Gaza <5804> one <259>, for Askelon <831> one <259>, for Gath <1661> one <259>, for Ekron <6138> one <259>;
18. And the golden <2091> mice <5909>, according to the number <4557> of all the cities <5892> of the Philistines <6430> belonging to the five <2568> lords <5633>, both of fenced <4013> cities <5892>, and of country <6521> villages <3724>, even unto the great <1419> stone of Abel <59>, whereon they set down <3240>(8689) the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>: which stone remaineth unto this day <3117> in the field <7704> of Joshua <3091>, the Bethshemite <1030>.
19. And he smote <5221>(8686) the men <376> of Bethshemesh <1053>, because they had looked <7200>(8804) into the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>, even he smote <5221>(8686) of the people <5971> fifty <2572> thousand <505> and threescore and ten <7657> men <582>: and the people <5971> lamented <56>(8691), because the LORD <3068> had smitten <5221>(8689) many of the people <5971> with a great <1419> slaughter <4347>.
20. And the men <582> of Bethshemesh <1053> said <559>(8799), Who is able <3201>(8799) to stand <5975>(8800) before <6440> this holy <6918> LORD <3068> God <430>? and to whom shall he go up <5927>(8799) from us?
21. And they sent <7971>(8799) messengers <4397> to the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of Kirjathjearim <7157>, saying <559>(8800), The Philistines <6430> have brought again <7725>(8689) the ark <727> of the LORD <3068>; come ye down <3381>(8798), and fetch it up <5927>(8685) to you.

OUR COMFORT
Israel has had their share of fear and terror. Throughout time, after they had turned away from God, their enemies had come in and brought them to their knees, killing, raping, looting, burning and driving them into exile. God's point in this chapter is that Israel's enemies are only mortal. In the end, they too will drink the cup they have forced on Israel and will be reduced to terror themselves. God has promised to comfort Israel, and, being the eternal, living, all-powerful God, he will fulfil his promise. He shows us a picture of Israel in their comforted state: "They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away."
The same promise of comfort, I believe, applies to us. We should not fear what men can do to us or be dismayed by the problems we face in this life. All this is only temporary and will pass away to make room for something much better. God is our comfort and he will fulfil his promises.

1. Hearken <8085>(8798) to me, ye that follow after <7291>(8802) righteousness <6664>, ye that seek <1245>(8764) the LORD <3068>: look <5027>(8685) unto the rock <6697> whence ye are hewn <2672>(8795), and to the hole <4718> of the pit <953> whence ye are digged <5365>(8795).
2. Look <5027>(8685) unto Abraham <85> your father <1>, and unto Sarah <8283> that bare <2342>(8787) you: for I called <7121>(8804) him alone <259>, and blessed <1288>(8762) him, and increased <7235>(8686) him.
3. For the LORD <3068> shall comfort <5162>(8765) Zion <6726>: he will comfort <5162>(8765) all her waste places <2723>; and he will make <7760>(8799) her wilderness <4057> like Eden <5731>, and her desert <6160> like the garden <1588> of the LORD <3068>; joy <8342> and gladness <8057> shall be found <4672>(8735) therein, thanksgiving <8426>, and the voice <6963> of melody <2172>.
4. Hearken <7181>(8685) unto me, my people <5971>; and give ear <238>(8685) unto me, O my nation <3816>: for a law <8451> shall proceed <3318>(8799) from me, and I will make my judgment <4941> to rest <7280>(8686) for a light <216> of the people <5971>.
5. My righteousness <6664> is near <7138>; my salvation <3468> is gone forth <3318>(8804), and mine arms <2220> shall judge <8199>(8799) the people <5971>; the isles <339> shall wait <6960>(8762) upon me, and on mine arm <2220> shall they trust <3176>(8762).
6. Lift up <5375>(8798) your eyes <5869> to the heavens <8064>, and look <5027>(8685) upon the earth <776> beneath: for the heavens <8064> shall vanish away <4414>(8738) like smoke <6227>, and the earth <776> shall wax old <1086>(8799) like a garment <899>, and they that dwell <3427>(8802) therein shall die <4191>(8799) in like <3644> manner <3654>: but my salvation <3444> shall be for ever <5769>, and my righteousness <6666> shall not be abolished <2865>(8735).
7. Hearken <8085>(8798) unto me, ye that know <3045>(8802) righteousness <6664>, the people <5971> in whose heart <3820> is my law <8451>; fear <3372>(8799) ye not the reproach <2781> of men <582>, neither be ye afraid <2865>(8735) of their revilings <1421>.
8. For the moth <6211> shall eat them up <398>(8799) like a garment <899>, and the worm <5580> shall eat <398>(8799) them like wool <6785>: but my righteousness <6666> shall be for ever <5769>, and my salvation <3444> from generation <1755> to generation <1755>.
9. Awake <5782>(8798), awake <5782>(8798), put on <3847>(8798) strength <5797>, O arm <2220> of the LORD <3068>; awake <5782>(8798), as in the ancient <6924> days <3117>, in the generations <1755> of old <5769>. Art thou not it that hath cut <2672>(8688) Rahab <7294>, and wounded <2490>(8781) the dragon <8577>?
10. Art thou not it which hath dried <2717>(8688) the sea <3220>, the waters <4325> of the great <7227> deep <8415>; that hath made <7760>(8804) the depths <4615> of the sea <3220> a way <1870> for the ransomed <1350>(8803) to pass over <5674>(8800)?
11. Therefore the redeemed <6299>(8803) of the LORD <3068> shall return <7725>(8799), and come <935>(8804) with singing <7440> unto Zion <6726>; and everlasting <5769> joy <8057> shall be upon their head <7218>: they shall obtain <5381>(8686) gladness <8342> and joy <8057>; and sorrow <3015> and mourning <585> shall flee away <5127>(8804).
12. I, even I, am he that comforteth <5162>(8764) you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid <3372>(8799) of a man <582> that shall die <4191>(8799), and of the son <1121> of man <120> which shall be made <5414>(8735) as grass <2682>;
13. And forgettest <7911>(8799) the LORD <3068> thy maker <6213>(8802), that hath stretched forth <5186>(8802) the heavens <8064>, and laid the foundations <3245>(8801) of the earth <776>; and hast feared <6342>(8762) continually <8548> every day <3117> because <6440> of the fury <2534> of the oppressor <6693>(8688), as if <834> he were ready <3559>(8790) to destroy <7843>(8687)? and where is the fury <2534> of the oppressor <6693>(8688)?
14. The captive exile <6808>(8802) hasteneth <4116>(8765) that he may be loosed <6605>(8736), and that he should not die <4191>(8799) in the pit <7845>, nor that his bread <3899> should fail <2637>(8799).
15. But I am the LORD <3068> thy God <430>, that divided <7280>(8802) the sea <3220>, whose waves <1530> roared <1993>(8799): The LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> is his name <8034>.
16. And I have put <7760>(8799) my words <1697> in thy mouth <6310>, and I have covered <3680>(8765) thee in the shadow <6738> of mine hand <3027>, that I may plant <5193>(8800) the heavens <8064>, and lay the foundations <3245>(8800) of the earth <776>, and say <559>(8800) unto Zion <6726>, Thou art my people <5971>.
17. Awake <5782>(8708), awake <5782>(8708), stand up <6965>(8798), O Jerusalem <3389>, which hast drunk <8354>(8804) at the hand <3027> of the LORD <3068> the cup <3563> of his fury <2534>; thou hast drunken <8354>(8804) the dregs <6907> of the cup <3563> of trembling <8653>, and wrung them out <4680>(8804).
18. There is none to guide <5095>(8764) her among all the sons <1121> whom she hath brought forth <3205>(8804); neither is there any that taketh <2388>(8688) her by the hand <3027> of all the sons <1121> that she hath brought up <1431>(8765).
19. These two <8147> things are come <7122>(8802) unto thee; who shall be sorry <5110>(8799) for thee? desolation <7701>, and destruction <7667>, and the famine <7458>, and the sword <2719>: by whom shall I comfort <5162>(8762) thee?
20. Thy sons <1121> have fainted <5968>(8795), they lie <7901>(8804) at the head <7218> of all the streets <2351>, as a wild bull <8377> in a net <4364>: they are full <4392> of the fury <2534> of the LORD <3068>, the rebuke <1606> of thy God <430>.
21. Therefore hear <8085>(8798) now this, thou afflicted <6041>, and drunken <7937>(8803), but not with wine <3196>:
22. Thus saith <559>(8804) thy Lord <113> the LORD <3068>, and thy God <430> that pleadeth <7378>(8799) the cause of his people <5971>, Behold, I have taken out <3947>(8804) of thine hand <3027> the cup <3563> of trembling <8653>, even the dregs <6907> of the cup <3563> of my fury <2534>; thou shalt no more <3254>(8686) drink it again <8354>(8800):
23. But I will put <7760>(8804) it into the hand <3027> of them that afflict <3013>(8688) thee; which have said <559>(8804) to thy soul <5315>, Bow down <7812>(8798), that we may go over <5674>(8799): and thou hast laid <7760>(8799) thy body <1460> as the ground <776>, and as the street <2351>, to them that went over <5674>(8802).

WORSHIP GOD.
The Bible tells us over and over that we must worship the Lord our God and worship him only. It also tells us that we must not worship idols, people or anything else that might be set up in opposition to the one true living God.
As Christians then, we need to concentrate our attention on the Lord our God and on his Son, Jesus Christ. We need to make sure that they take the Number One place in our lives and that all our worship is reserved only for them. We need to make sure that our worship is true and not just a matter of lip service because the time may come when the whole world will be carried away with the worship of a false god, which Revelation calls the Beast. We read that "All the inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast - all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the lamb that was slain from the creation of the world." And, "He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed." And later, "... and cause all who refuse to worship the image to be killed."
Let us resolve now to make sure our worship of God is true and strong so that we recognise false worship when it comes and can stand firm in our faith.

A quick overview of these two chapters shows that they deal with the rise of the apostate church that would oppose the Truth and its believers.
The apostate church was able to operate with the blessing of the Emperor Constantine who embraced Christianity for his own political ends. Thus, Imperial Rome became the state sponsor of the so-called Christian church.
Constantine endorsed the Council of Nicaea's declaration of the doctrine of the Trinity (325 AD), and commanded that it must be believed by all Christians. Those who did not were deemed heretics and subject to abuse. This abuse continued for many centuries resulting in horrible conditions and death for true believers.
The Lord Jesus will finally destroy this false system of worship when He returns.

13:8 We see two classes of people in the earth. This is exactly how John was inspired to present things. Society would have us believe that differing views should be allowed to exist together with no one denigrating anyone else for their belief system. However this is not how God views things on the earth. There is one truth – His teaching – every other philosophy that opposes Him it wrong.
This is the stark reality of how our Father views things. Does this match our way of viewing the differing views that oppose God’s teaching?

1. And <2532> there appeared <3700>(5681) a great <3173> wonder <4592> in <1722> heaven <3772>; a woman <1135> clothed <4016>(5772) with the sun <2246>, and <2532> the moon <4582> under <5270> her <846> feet <4228>, and <2532> upon <1909> her <846> head <2776> a crown <4735> of twelve <1427> stars <792>:
2. And <2532> she being <2192>(5723) with <1722> child <1064> cried <2896>(5719), travailing in birth <5605>(5723), and <2532> pained <928>(5746) to be delivered <5088>(5629).
3. And <2532> there appeared <3700>(5681) another <243> wonder <4592> in <1722> heaven <3772>; and <2532> behold <2400>(5628) a great <3173> red <4450> dragon <1404>, having <2192>(5723) seven <2033> heads <2776> and <2532> ten <1176> horns <2768>, and <2532> seven <2033> crowns <1238> upon <1909> his <848> heads <2776>.
4. And <2532> his <846> tail <3769> drew <4951>(5719) the third part <5154> of the stars <792> of heaven <3772>, and <2532> did cast <906>(5627) them <846> to <1519> the earth <1093>: and <2532> the dragon <1404> stood <2476>(5707)(5758) before <1799> the woman <1135> which <3588> was ready <3195>(5723) to be delivered <5088>(5629), for <2443> to devour <2719>(5632) her <846> child <5043> as soon as <3752> it was born <5088>(5632).
5. And <2532> she brought forth <5088>(5627) a man <730> child <5207>, who <3739> was <3195>(5719) to rule <4165>(5721) all <3956> nations <1484> with <1722> a rod <4464> of iron <4603>: and <2532> her <846> child <5043> was caught up <726>(5681) unto <4314> God <2316>, and <2532> to his <846> throne <2362>.
6. And <2532> the woman <1135> fled <5343>(5627) into <1519> the wilderness <2048>, where <3699> she hath <2192>(5719) a place <5117> prepared <2090>(5772) of <575> God <2316>, that <2443> they should feed <5142>(5725) her <846> there <1563> a thousand <5507> two hundred <1250> and threescore <1835> days <2250>.
7. And <2532> there was <1096>(5633) war <4171> in <1722> heaven <3772>: Michael <3413> and <2532> his <846> angels <32> fought <4170>(5656) against <2596> the dragon <1404>; and <2532> the dragon <1404> fought <4170>(5656) and <2532> his <846> angels <32>,
8. And <2532> prevailed <2480>(5656) not <3756>; neither <3777> was their place <5117> found <2147>(5681) any more <2089> in <1722> heaven <3772>.
9. And <2532> the great <3173> dragon <1404> was cast out <906>(5681), that old <744> serpent <3789>, called <2564>(5746) the Devil <1228>, and <2532> Satan <4567>, which <3588> deceiveth <4105>(5723) the whole <3650> world <3625>: he was cast out <906>(5681) into <1519> the earth <1093>, and <2532> his <846> angels <32> were cast out <906>(5681) with <3326> him <846>.
10. And <2532> I heard <191>(5656) a loud <3173> voice <5456> saying <3004>(5723) in <1722> heaven <3772>, Now <737> is come <1096>(5633) salvation <4991>, and <2532> strength <1411>, and <2532> the kingdom <932> of our <2257> God <2316>, and <2532> the power <1849> of his <846> Christ <5547>: for <3754> the accuser <2723>(5723) of our <2257> brethren <80> is cast down <2598>(5681), which <3588> accused <2725> them <846> before <1799> our <2257> God <2316> day <2250> and <2532> night <3571>.
11. And <2532> they overcame <3528>(5656) him <846> by <1223> the blood <129> of the Lamb <721>, and <2532> by <1223> the word <3056> of their <848> testimony <3141>; and <2532> they loved <25>(5656) not <3756> their <848> lives <5590> unto <891> the death <2288>.
12. Therefore <1223> <5124> rejoice <2165>(5744), ye heavens <3772>, and <2532> ye that dwell <4637>(5723) in <1722> them <846>. Woe <3759> to the inhabiters <2730>(5723) of the earth <1093> and <2532> of the sea <2281>! for <3754> the devil <1228> is come down <2597>(5627) unto <4314> you <5209>, having <2192>(5723) great <3173> wrath <2372>, because he knoweth <1492>(5761) that <3754> he hath <2192>(5719) but a short <3641> time <2540>.
13. And <2532> when <3753> the dragon <1404> saw <1492>(5627) that <3754> he was cast <906>(5681) unto <1519> the earth <1093>, he persecuted <1377>(5656) the woman <1135> which <3748> brought forth <5088>(5627) the man <730> child.
14. And <2532> to the woman <1135> were given <1325>(5681) two <1417> wings <4420> of a great <3173> eagle <105>, that <2443> she might fly <4072>(5741) into <1519> the wilderness <2048>, into <1519> her <848> place <5117>, where <3699> she is nourished <5142>(5743) for a time <1563> <2540>, and <2532> times <2540>, and <2532> half <2255> a time <2540>, from <575> the face <4383> of the serpent <3789>.
15. And <2532> the serpent <3789> cast <906>(5627) out of <1537> his <848> mouth <4750> water <5204> as <5613> a flood <4215> after <3694> the woman <1135>, that <2443> he might cause <4160>(5661) her <5026> to be carried away of the flood <4216>.
16. And <2532> the earth <1093> helped <997>(5656) the woman <1135>, and <2532> the earth <1093> opened <455>(5656) her <848> mouth <4750>, and <2532> swallowed up <2666>(5627) the flood <4215> which <3739> the dragon <1404> cast <906>(5627) out of <1537> his <848> mouth <4750>.
17. And <2532> the dragon <1404> was wroth <3710>(5681) with <1909> the woman <1135>, and <2532> went <565>(5627) to make <4160>(5658) war <4171> with <3326> the remnant <3062> of her <846> seed <4690>, which <3588> keep <5083>(5723) the commandments <1785> of God <2316>, and <2532> have <2192>(5723) the testimony <3141> of Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>.
1. And <2532> I stood <2476>(5681) upon <1909> the sand <285> of the sea <2281>, and <2532> saw <1492>(5627) a beast <2342> rise up <305>(5723) out of <1537> the sea <2281>, having <2192>(5723) seven <2033> heads <2776> and <2532> ten <1176> horns <2768>, and <2532> upon <1909> his <846> horns <2768> ten <1176> crowns <1238>, and <2532> upon <1909> his <846> heads <2776> the name <3686> of blasphemy <988>.
2. And <2532> the beast <2342> which <3739> I saw <1492>(5627) was <2258>(5713) like <3664> unto a leopard <3917>, and <2532> his <846> feet <4228> were as <5613> the feet of a bear <715>, and <2532> his <846> mouth <4750> as <5613> the mouth <4750> of a lion <3023>: and <2532> the dragon <1404> gave <1325>(5656) him <846> his <848> power <1411>, and <2532> his <848> seat <2362>, and <2532> great <3173> authority <1849>.
3. And <2532> I saw <1492>(5627) one <3391> of his <846> heads <2776> as it were <5613> wounded <4969>(5772) to <1519> death <2288>; and <2532> his <846> deadly <2288> wound <4127> was healed <2323>(5681): and <2532> all <3650> the world <1093> wondered <2296>(5681)(5625) <2296>(5656) after <3694> <1722> the beast <2342>.
4. And <2532> they worshipped <4352>(5656) the dragon <1404> which <3739> gave <1325>(5656) power <1849> unto the beast <2342>: and <2532> they worshipped <4352>(5656) the beast <2342>, saying <3004>(5723), Who <5101> is like <3664> unto the beast <2342>? who <5101> is able <1410>(5736) to make war <4170>(5658) with <3326> him <846>?
5. And <2532> there was given <1325>(5681) unto him <846> a mouth <4750> speaking <2980>(5723) great things <3173> and <2532> blasphemies <988>; and <2532> power <1849> was given <1325>(5681) unto him <846> to continue <4160>(5658) forty <5062> and two <1417> months <3376>.
6. And <2532> he opened <455>(5656) his <848> mouth <4750> in <1519> blasphemy <988> against <4314> God <2316>, to blaspheme <987>(5658) his <846> name <3686>, and <2532> his <846> tabernacle <4633>, and <2532> them that dwell <4637>(5723) in <1722> heaven <3772>.
7. And <2532> it was given <1325>(5681) unto him <846> to make <4160>(5658) war <4171> with <3326> the saints <40>, and <2532> to overcome <3528>(5658) them <846>: and <2532> power <1849> was given <1325>(5681) him <846> over <1909> all <3956> kindreds <5443>, and <2532> tongues <1100>, and <2532> nations <1484>.
8. And <2532> all <3956> that dwell <2730>(5723) upon <1909> the earth <1093> shall worship <4352>(5692) him <846>, whose <3739> names <3686> are <1125> <0> not <3756> written <1125>(5769) in <1722> the book <976> of life <2222> of the Lamb <721> slain <4969>(5772) from <575> the foundation <2602> of the world <2889>.
9. If any man <1536> have <2192>(5719) an ear <3775>, let him hear <191>(5657).
10. He that <1536> leadeth <4863>(5719) into captivity <161> shall go <5217>(5719) into <1519> captivity <161>: he that <1536> killeth <615>(5719) with <1722> the sword <3162> must <1163>(5748) be killed <615>(5683) with <1722> the sword <3162>. Here <5602> is <2076>(5748) the patience <5281> and <2532> the faith <4102> of the saints <40>.
11. And <2532> I beheld <1492>(5627) another <243> beast <2342> coming up <305>(5723) out of <1537> the earth <1093>; and <2532> he had <2192>(5707) two <1417> horns <2768> like <3664> a lamb <721>, and <2532> he spake <2980>(5707) as <5613> a dragon <1404>.
12. And <2532> he exerciseth <4160>(5719) all <3956> the power <1849> of the first <4413> beast <2342> before <1799> him <846>, and <2532> causeth <4160>(5719) the earth <1093> and <2532> them which dwell <2730>(5723) therein <1722> <846> to <2443> worship <4352>(5661) the first <4413> beast <2342>, whose <3739> deadly <2288> wound <4127> was healed <2323>(5681).
13. And <2532> he doeth <4160>(5719) great <3173> wonders <4592>, so <2532> that <2443> he maketh <4160>(5725) fire <4442> come down <2597>(5721) from <1537> heaven <3772> on <1519> the earth <1093> in the sight <1799> of men <444>,
14. And <2532> deceiveth <4105>(5719) them that dwell <2730>(5723) on <1909> the earth <1093> by <1223> the means of those miracles <4592> which <3739> he <846> had power <1325>(5681) to do <4160>(5658) in the sight <1799> of the beast <2342>; saying <3004>(5723) to them that dwell <2730>(5723) on <1909> the earth <1093>, that they should make <4160>(5658) an image <1504> to the beast <2342>, which <3739> had <2192>(5719) the wound <4127> by a sword <3162>, and <2532> did live <2198>(5656).
15. And <2532> he had power <1325>(5681) to give <1325>(5629) life <4151> unto the image <1504> of the beast <2342>, that <2443> the image <1504> of the beast <2342> should <2980> <0> both <2532> speak <2980>(5661), and <2532> cause <4160>(5661) that as many as <3745> would <302> <4352> <0> not <3361> worship <4352>(5661) the image <1504> of the beast <2342> should be killed <2443> <615>(5686).
16. And <2532> he causeth <4160>(5719) all <3956>, both small <3398> and <2532> great <3173>, <2532> rich <4145> and <2532> poor <4434>, <2532> free <1658> and <2532> bond <1401>, to <2443> receive <1325>(5661) a mark <5480> in <1909> their right hand <1188> <5495>, or <2228> in <1909> their <846> foreheads <3359>:
