v.19 "...LET ME NOW RUN..."
It's amazing how the Kings were able to determine the nature of the news by who was running.
Our conduct does not go unnoticed.
Matt Drywood [Hamilton Book Road (Can)] Comment added in 2003 Reply to Matt
David was as genuinely sorry over Absalom's death as he had been by Saul and Jonathan's killing. The principle in Christ's model prayer, "Forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us" (Luke 11:4), was indeed practised by David 1,000 years before Christ.
David Simpson [Worcester (UK)] Comment added in 2004 Reply to David
The death of Absalom was a heavy burden, and it is impossible for any of us not to sympathize with the outburst of feeling that David showed at this time. All the thoughts of victory he had won as king were completely wiped out by the loss that he suffered as a father. His affection for his worthless son, was greater than for what it would have been for anything else that he could have suffered as king.

1. And David <1732> numbered <6485>(8799) the people <5971> that were with him, and set <7760>(8799) captains <8269> of thousands <505> and captains <8269> of hundreds <3967> over them.
2. And David <1732> sent forth <7971>(8762) a third part <7992> of the people <5971> under the hand <3027> of Joab <3097>, and a third part <7992> under the hand <3027> of Abishai <52> the son <1121> of Zeruiah <6870>, Joab's <3097> brother <251>, and a third part <7992> under the hand <3027> of Ittai <863> the Gittite <1663>. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799) unto the people <5971>, I will surely <3318>(8800) go forth <3318>(8799) with you myself <589> also.
3. But the people <5971> answered <559>(8799), Thou shalt not go forth <3318>(8799): for if we flee <5127>(8799) away <5127>(8800), they will not care <7760>(8799) <3820> for us; neither if half <2677> of us die <4191>(8799), will they care <7760>(8799) <3820> for us: but now thou art worth <3644> ten <6235> thousand <505> of us: therefore now it is better <2896> that thou succour <5826>(8800)(8675) <5826>(8687) us out of the city <5892>.
4. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799) unto them, What seemeth <5869> you best <3190>(8799) I will do <6213>(8799). And the king <4428> stood <5975>(8799) by the gate <8179> side <3027>, and all the people <5971> came out <3318>(8804) by hundreds <3967> and by thousands <505>.
5. And the king <4428> commanded <6680>(8762) Joab <3097> and Abishai <52> and Ittai <863>, saying <559>(8800), Deal gently <328> for my sake with the young man <5288>, even with Absalom <53>. And all the people <5971> heard <8085>(8804) when the king <4428> gave all the captains <8269> charge <6680>(8763) concerning <1697> Absalom <53>.
6. So the people <5971> went out <3318>(8799) into the field <7704> against <7125>(8800) Israel <3478>: and the battle <4421> was in the wood <3293> of Ephraim <669>;
7. Where the people <5971> of Israel <3478> were slain <5062>(8735) before <6440> the servants <5650> of David <1732>, and there was there a great <1419> slaughter <4046> that day <3117> of twenty <6242> thousand <505> men.
8. For the battle <4421> was there scattered <6327>(8737) over the face <6440> of all the country <776>: and the wood <3293> devoured <398>(8800) more <7235>(8686) people <5971> that day <3117> than the sword <2719> devoured <398>(8804).
9. And Absalom <53> met <7122>(8735) the servants <6440> <5650> of David <1732>. And Absalom <53> rode <7392>(8802) upon a mule <6505>, and the mule <6505> went <935>(8799) under the thick boughs <7730> of a great <1419> oak <424>, and his head <7218> caught hold <2388>(8799) of the oak <424>, and he was taken up <5414>(8714) between the heaven <8064> and the earth <776>; and the mule <6505> that was under him went away <5674>(8804).
10. And a certain <259> man <376> saw <7200>(8799) it, and told <5046>(8686) Joab <3097>, and said <559>(8799), Behold, I saw <7200>(8804) Absalom <53> hanged <8518>(8803) in an oak <424>.
11. And Joab <3097> said <559>(8799) unto the man <376> that told <5046>(8688) him, And, behold, thou sawest <7200>(8804) him, and why didst thou not smite <5221>(8689) him there to the ground <776>? and I would have given <5414>(8800) thee ten <6235> shekels of silver <3701>, and a <259> girdle <2290>.
12. And the man <376> said <559>(8799) unto Joab <3097>, Though <3863> I should receive <8254>(8802) a thousand <505> shekels of silver <3701> in mine hand <3709>, yet would I not put forth <7971>(8799) mine hand <3027> against the king's <4428> son <1121>: for in our hearing <241> the king <4428> charged <6680>(8765) thee and Abishai <52> and Ittai <863>, saying <559>(8800), Beware <8104>(8798) that none touch the young man <5288> Absalom <53>.
13. Otherwise <176> I should have wrought <6213>(8804) falsehood <8267> against mine own life <5315>: for there is no matter <1697> hid <3582>(8735) from the king <4428>, and thou thyself wouldest have set <3320>(8691) thyself against me.
14. Then said <559>(8799) Joab <3097>, I may not tarry <3176>(8686) thus with thee <6440>. And he took <3947>(8799) three <7969> darts <7626> in his hand <3709>, and thrust <8628>(8799) them through the heart <3820> of Absalom <53>, while he was yet alive <2416> in the midst of the oak <424>.
15. And ten <6235> young men <5288> that bare <5375>(8802) Joab's <3097> armour <3627> compassed about <5437>(8799) and smote <5221>(8686) Absalom <53>, and slew <4191>(8686) him.
16. And Joab <3097> blew <8628>(8799) the trumpet <7782>, and the people <5971> returned <7725>(8799) from pursuing <7291>(8800) after <310> Israel <3478>: for Joab <3097> held back <2820>(8804) the people <5971>.
17. And they took <3947>(8799) Absalom <53>, and cast <7993>(8686) him into a great <1419> pit <6354> in the wood <3293>, and laid <5324>(8686) a very <3966> great <1419> heap <1530> of stones <68> upon him: and all Israel <3478> fled <5127>(8804) every one <376> to his tent <168>.
18. Now Absalom <53> in his lifetime <2416> had taken <3947>(8804) and reared up <5324>(8686) for himself a pillar <4678>, which is in the king's <4428> dale <6010>: for he said <559>(8804), I have no son <1121> to keep my name <8034> in remembrance <2142>(8687): and he called <7121>(8799) the pillar <4678> after his own name <8034>: and it is called <7121>(8735) unto this day <3117>, Absalom's <53> place <3027>.
19. Then said <559>(8804) Ahimaaz <290> the son <1121> of Zadok <6659>, Let me now run <7323>(8799), and bear <1319> <0> the king <4428> tidings <1319>(8762), how that the LORD <3068> hath avenged <8199>(8804) him of his enemies <3027> <341>(8802).
20. And Joab <3097> said <559>(8799) unto him, Thou <376> shalt not bear tidings <1309> this day <3117>, but thou shalt bear tidings <1319>(8765) another <312> day <3117>: but this day <3117> thou shalt bear no tidings <1319>(8762), because the king's <4428> son <1121> is dead <4191>(8804).
21. Then said <559>(8799) Joab <3097> to Cushi <3569>, Go <3212>(8798) tell <5046>(8685) the king <4428> what thou hast seen <7200>(8804). And Cushi <3569> bowed <7812>(8691) himself unto Joab <3097>, and ran <7323>(8799).
22. Then said <559>(8799) Ahimaaz <290> the son <1121> of Zadok <6659> yet again <3254>(8686) to Joab <3097>, But howsoever <4100>, let me, I pray thee, also run <7323>(8799) after <310> Cushi <3569>. And Joab <3097> said <559>(8799), Wherefore wilt thou run <7323>(8801), my son <1121>, seeing that thou hast no tidings <1309> ready <4672>(8802)?
23. But howsoever, said he, let me run <7323>(8799). And he said <559>(8799) unto him, Run <7323>(8798). Then Ahimaaz <290> ran <7323>(8799) by the way <1870> of the plain <3603>, and overran <5674>(8799) Cushi <3569>.
24. And David <1732> sat <3427>(8802) between the two <8147> gates <8179>: and the watchman <6822>(8802) went up <3212>(8799) to the roof <1406> over the gate <8179> unto the wall <2346>, and lifted up <5375>(8799) his eyes <5869>, and looked <7200>(8799), and behold a man <376> running <7323>(8801) alone.
25. And the watchman <6822>(8802) cried <7121>(8799), and told <5046>(8686) the king <4428>. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799), If he be alone, there is tidings <1309> in his mouth <6310>. And he came <3212>(8799) apace <1980>(8800), and drew near <7131>.
26. And the watchman <6822>(8802) saw <7200>(8799) another <312> man <376> running <7323>(8801): and the watchman <6822>(8802) called <7121>(8799) unto the porter <7778>, and said <559>(8799), Behold another man <376> running <7323>(8801) alone. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799), He also bringeth tidings <1319>(8764).
27. And the watchman <6822>(8802) said <559>(8799), Me thinketh <7200>(8802) the running <4794> of the foremost <7223> is like the running <4794> of Ahimaaz <290> the son <1121> of Zadok <6659>. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799), He is a good <2896> man <376>, and cometh <935>(8799) with good <2896> tidings <1309>.
28. And Ahimaaz <290> called <7121>(8799), and said <559>(8799) unto the king <4428>, All is well <7965>. And he fell down <7812>(8691) to the earth <776> upon his face <639> before the king <4428>, and said <559>(8799), Blessed <1288>(8803) be the LORD <3068> thy God <430>, which hath delivered up <5462>(8765) the men <582> that lifted up <5375>(8804) their hand <3027> against my lord <113> the king <4428>.
29. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799), Is the young man <5288> Absalom <53> safe <7965>? And Ahimaaz <290> answered <559>(8799), When Joab <3097> sent <7971>(8800) the king's <4428> servant <5650>, and me thy servant <5650>, I saw <7200>(8804) a great <1419> tumult <1995>, but I knew <3045>(8804) not what it was.
30. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799) unto him, Turn aside <5437>(8798), and stand <3320>(8690) here <3541>. And he turned aside <5437>(8735), and stood still <5975>(8799).
31. And, behold, Cushi <3569> came <935>(8802); and Cushi <3569> said <559>(8799), Tidings <1319>(8691), my lord <113> the king <4428>: for the LORD <3068> hath avenged <8199>(8804) thee this day <3117> of all them <3027> that rose up <6965>(8801) against thee.
32. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799) unto Cushi <3569>, Is the young man <5288> Absalom <53> safe <7965>? And Cushi <3569> answered <559>(8799), The enemies <341>(8802) of my lord <113> the king <4428>, and all that rise <6965>(8804) against thee to do thee hurt <7451>, be as that young man <5288> is.
33. And the king <4428> was much moved <7264>(8799), and went up <5927>(8799) to the chamber <5944> over the gate <8179>, and wept <1058>(8799): and as he went <3212>(8800), thus he said <559>(8804), O my son <1121> Absalom <53>, my son <1121>, my son <1121> Absalom <53>! would God I had died <4191>(8800) for thee <5414>(8799), O Absalom <53>, my son <1121>, my son <1121>!

OUTLINE OF JEREMIAH
PART TWO -- THE PROPHECIES TO JUDAH (JEREMIAH 2:1 to 45:5)
I. The Condemnation of Judah (Jeremiah 2:1 to 25:38)
I. Ninth Sermon - Against Judah's Kings (Jeremiah 21:1 to 23:8):
5. chapter 22 of Jeremiah takes place chronologically before chapter 21 and likely during the reign of Jehoiakim; after "Josiah's<2977>" 31 year reign his fourth son born "Shallum<7967>" (2Kin 23:29-31;1Chron 3:15) renamed "Jehoahaz<3059>" reigned for three months circa 608 BC until deposed by Pharaoh Neco who took him to Egypt where he died in captivity; Neco then installed as a vassal king Josiah's second son (25 years old at the time 2Kin 23:36) born "Eliakim<471>" renamed by Neco "Jehoiakim<3079>" who reigned circa 608-597 BC, but after the Egyptians were defeated by the Babylonians at Carchemish in 605 BC and Jerusalem was besieged by the Babylonians Jehoiakim switched loyalties to Babylon, then a failed Babylonian invasion of Egypt in 601 BC had Jehoiakim switch loyalties back to Egypt resulting in the Babylonians besieging Jerusalem and Jehoiakim's body being thrown over the city walls before the siege ended; for 3 months and 10 days Jehoiakim's son "Coniah<3659>" short for "Jeconiah<3204>" also named "Jehoiachin<3078>" reigned until deposed by Nebuchadnessar circa 597 BC who then installed as a vassal king the third son of Josiah first named "Mattaniah<4983>" (2Kin 24:15-20;Zeph 1:1-8) later renamed by Nebuchadnezzar "Zedekiah<6667>".

23:13-14 Jeremiah’s comments are addressed specifically to Jehoiakim (:18) because of the way he was full of pride and did not follow the ways of Josiah.

1. Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; Go down <3381>(8798) to the house <1004> of the king <4428> of Judah <3063>, and speak <1696>(8765) there this word <1697>,
2. And say <559>(8804), Hear <8085>(8798) the word <1697> of the LORD <3068>, O king <4428> of Judah <3063>, that sittest <3427>(8802) upon the throne <3678> of David <1732>, thou, and thy servants <5650>, and thy people <5971> that enter <935>(8802) in by these gates <8179>:
3. Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; Execute <6213>(8798) ye judgment <4941> and righteousness <6666>, and deliver <5337>(8685) the spoiled <1497>(8803) out of the hand <3027> of the oppressor <6216>: and do no wrong <3238>(8686), do no violence <2554>(8799) to the stranger <1616>, the fatherless <3490>, nor the widow <490>, neither shed <8210>(8799) innocent <5355> blood <1818> in this place <4725>.
4. For if ye do <6213>(8799) this thing <1697> indeed <6213>(8800), then shall there enter in <935>(8804) by the gates <8179> of this house <1004> kings <4428> sitting <3427>(8802) upon the throne <3678> of David <1732>, riding <7392>(8802) in chariots <7393> and on horses <5483>, he, and his servants <5650>, and his people <5971>.
5. But if ye will not hear <8085>(8799) these words <1697>, I swear <7650>(8738) by myself, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>, that this house <1004> shall become a desolation <2723>.
6. For thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> unto the king's <4428> house <1004> of Judah <3063>; Thou art Gilead <1568> unto me, and the head <7218> of Lebanon <3844>: yet surely I will make <7896>(8799) thee a wilderness <4057>, and cities <5892> which are not inhabited <3427>(8738)(8675) <3427>(8737).
7. And I will prepare <6942>(8765) destroyers <7843>(8688) against thee, every one <376> with his weapons <3627>: and they shall cut down <3772>(8804) thy choice <4005> cedars <730>, and cast <5307>(8689) them into the fire <784>.
8. And many <7227> nations <1471> shall pass <5674>(8804) by this city <5892>, and they shall say <559>(8804) every man <376> to his neighbour <7453>, Wherefore hath the LORD <3068> done <6213>(8804) thus unto this great <1419> city <5892>?
9. Then they shall answer <559>(8804), Because they have forsaken <5800>(8804) the covenant <1285> of the LORD <3068> their God <430>, and worshipped <7812>(8691) other <312> gods <430>, and served <5647>(8799) them.
10. Weep <1058>(8799) ye not for the dead <4191>(8801), neither bemoan <5110>(8799) him: but weep <1058>(8798) sore <1058>(8800) for him that goeth away <1980>(8802): for he shall return <7725>(8799) no more, nor see <7200>(8804) his native <4138> country <776>.
11. For thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> touching <413> Shallum <7967> the son <1121> of Josiah <2977> king <4428> of Judah <3063>, which reigned <4427>(8802) instead of Josiah <2977> his father <1>, which went forth <3318>(8804) out of this place <4725>; He shall not return <7725>(8799) thither any more:
12. But he shall die <4191>(8799) in the place <4725> whither they have led him captive <1540>(8689), and shall see <7200>(8799) this land <776> no more.
13. Woe <1945> unto him that buildeth <1129>(8802) his house <1004> by <3808> unrighteousness <6664>, and his chambers <5944> by wrong <4941>; that useth his neighbour's <7453> service <5647>(8799) without wages <2600>, and giveth <5414>(8799) him not for his work <6467>;
14. That saith <559>(8802), I will build <1129>(8799) me a wide <4060> house <1004> and large <7304>(8794) chambers <5944>, and cutteth him out <7167>(8804) windows <2474>; and it is cieled <5603>(8803) with cedar <730>, and painted <4886>(8800) with vermilion <8350>.
15. Shalt thou reign <4427>(8799), because thou closest <8474>(8808) thyself in cedar <730>? did not thy father <1> eat <398>(8804) and drink <8354>(8804), and do <6213>(8804) judgment <4941> and justice <6666>, and then it was well <2896> with him?
16. He judged <1777>(8804) the cause <1779> of the poor <6041> and needy <34>; then it was well <2896> with him: was not this to know <1847> me? saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>.
17. But thine eyes <5869> and thine heart <3820> are not but for thy covetousness <1215>, and for to shed <8210>(8800) innocent <5355> blood <1818>, and for oppression <6233>, and for violence <4835>, to do <6213>(8800) it.
18. Therefore thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> concerning Jehoiakim <3079> the son <1121> of Josiah <2977> king <4428> of Judah <3063>; They shall not lament <5594>(8799) for him, saying, Ah <1945> my brother <251>! or, Ah <1945> sister <269>! they shall not lament <5594>(8799) for him, saying, Ah <1945> lord <113>! or, Ah <1945> his glory <1935>!
19. He shall be buried <6912>(8735) with the burial <6900> of an ass <2543>, drawn <5498>(8800) and cast forth <7993>(8687) beyond <1973> the gates <8179> of Jerusalem <3389>.
20. Go up <5927>(8798) to Lebanon <3844>, and cry <6817>(8798); and lift up <5414>(8798) thy voice <6963> in Bashan <1316>, and cry <6817>(8798) from the passages <5676>: for all thy lovers <157>(8764) are destroyed <7665>(8738).
21. I spake <1696>(8765) unto thee in thy prosperity <7962>; but thou saidst <559>(8804), I will not hear <8085>(8799). This hath been thy manner <1870> from thy youth <5271>, that thou obeyedst <8085>(8804) not my voice <6963>.
22. The wind <7307> shall eat up <7462>(8799) all thy pastors <7462>(8802), and thy lovers <157>(8764) shall go <3212>(8799) into captivity <7628>: surely then shalt thou be ashamed <954>(8799) and confounded <3637>(8738) for all thy wickedness <7451>.
23. O inhabitant <3427>(8802) of Lebanon <3844>, that makest thy nest <7077>(8794) in the cedars <730>, how gracious <2603>(8738) shalt thou be when pangs <2256> come <935>(8800) upon thee, the pain <2427> as of a woman in travail <3205>(8802)!
24. As I live <2416>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>, though Coniah <3659> the son <1121> of Jehoiakim <3079> king <4428> of Judah <3063> were the signet <2368> upon my right <3225> hand <3027>, yet would I pluck <5423>(8799) thee thence;
25. And I will give <5414>(8804) thee into the hand <3027> of them that seek <1245>(8764) thy life <5315>, and into the hand <3027> of them whose face <6440> thou fearest <3016>(8801), even into the hand <3027> of Nebuchadrezzar <5019> king <4428> of Babylon <894>, and into the hand <3027> of the Chaldeans <3778>.
26. And I will cast thee out <2904>(8689), and thy mother <517> that bare <3205>(8804) thee, into another <312> country <776>, where ye were not born <3205>(8795); and there shall ye die <4191>(8799).
27. But to the land <776> whereunto they desire <5375>(8764)(8676) <5315> to return <7725>(8800), thither shall they not return <7725>(8799).
28. Is this man <376> Coniah <3659> a despised <959>(8737) broken <5310>(8803) idol <6089>? is he a vessel <3627> wherein is no pleasure <2656>? wherefore are they cast out <7993>(8717), he and his seed <2233>, and are cast <2904>(8717) into a land <776> which they know <3045>(8804) not?
29. O earth <776>, earth <776>, earth <776>, hear <8085>(8798) the word <1697> of the LORD <3068>.
30. Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>, Write <3789>(8798) ye this man <376> childless <6185>, a man <1397> that shall not prosper <6743>(8799) in his days <3117>: for no man <376> of his seed <2233> shall prosper <6743>(8799), sitting <3427>(8802) upon the throne <3678> of David <1732>, and ruling <4910>(8802) any more in Judah <3063>.
Notes that are not verse specific
The force of this chapter is that 'election' not right marks the way to God. Israel thought their 'election' was by right. In reality they, like the gentiles have no inherent rights before God. God confers benefits on both Jew and gentile.

1. I say <3004>(5719) the truth <225> in <1722> Christ <5547>, I lie <5574>(5736) not <3756>, my <3450> conscience <4893> also bearing <4828> <0> me <3427> witness <4828>(5723) in <1722> the Holy <40> Ghost <4151>,
2. That <3754> I <3427> have <2076>(5748) great <3173> heaviness <3077> and <2532> continual <88> sorrow in <3601> my <3450> heart <2588>.
3. For <1063> I <1473> could wish <2172>(5711) that myself <846> were <1511>(5750) accursed <331> from <575> Christ <5547> for <5228> my <3450> brethren <80>, my <3450> kinsmen <4773> according <2596> to the flesh <4561>:
4. Who <3748> are <1526>(5748) Israelites <2475>; to whom <3739> pertaineth the adoption <5206>, and <2532> the glory <1391>, and <2532> the covenants <1242>, and <2532> the giving of the law <3548>, and <2532> the service <2999> of God, and <2532> the promises <1860>;
5. Whose <3739> are the fathers <3962>, and <2532> of <1537> whom <3739> as concerning <2596> the flesh <4561> Christ <5547> came, who <5607>(5752) is over <1909> all <3956>, God <2316> blessed <2128> for <1519> ever <165>. Amen <281>.
6. Not <3756> as <3634> though <1161> <3754> the word <3056> of God <2316> hath taken none effect <1601>(5758). For <1063> they are not <3756> all <3956> <1537> Israel <2474>, which <3588> <3778> are of Israel <2474>:
7. Neither <3761>, because <3754> they are <1526>(5748) the seed <4690> of Abraham <11>, are they all <3956> children <5043>: but <235>, In <1722> Isaac <2464> shall <2564> <0> thy <4671> seed <4690> be called <2564>(5701).
8. That <5123>(5748) is, They which are the children <5043> of the flesh <4561>, these <5023> are not <3756> the children <5043> of God <2316>: but <235> the children <5043> of the promise <1860> are counted <3049>(5736) for <1519> the seed <4690>.
9. For <1063> this <3778> is the word <3056> of promise <1860>, At <2596> this <5126> time <2540> will I come <2064>(5695), and <2532> Sara <4564> shall have <2071>(5704) a son <5207>.
10. And <1161> not <3756> only <3440> this; but <235> when Rebecca <4479> also <2532> had conceived <2845> by <1537> one <1520> <2192>(5723), even by our <2257> father <3962> Isaac <2464>;
11. (For <1063> the children being <1080> <0> not yet <3380> born <1080>(5685), neither <3366> having done <4238>(5660) any <5100> good <18> or <2228> evil <2556>, that <2443> the purpose <4286> of God <2316> according <2596> to election <1589> might stand <3306>(5725), not <3756> of <1537> works <2041>, but <235> of <1537> him that calleth <2564>(5723);)
12. <3754> It was said <4483>(5681) unto her <846>, The elder <3187> shall serve <1398>(5692) the younger <1640>.
13. As <2531> it is written <1125>(5769), Jacob <2384> have I loved <25>(5656), but <1161> Esau <2269> have I hated <3404>(5656).
14. What <5101> shall we say <2046>(5692) then <3767>? <3361> Is there unrighteousness <93> with <3844> God <2316>? God forbid <3361> <1096>(5636).
15. For <1063> he saith <3004>(5719) to Moses <3475>, I will have mercy on <1653>(5692) whom <3739> <302> I will have mercy <1653>(5725), and <2532> I will have compassion <3627>(5692) on whom <3739> <302> I will have compassion <3627>(5725).
16. So <686> then <3767> it is not <3756> of him that willeth <2309>(5723), nor <3761> of him that runneth <5143>(5723), but <235> of God <2316> that sheweth mercy <1653>(5723).
17. For <1063> the scripture <1124> saith <3004>(5719) unto Pharaoh <5328>, Even for <3754> <1519> this <5124> same purpose <846> have I raised <1825> <0> thee <4571> up <1825>(5656), that <3704> I might shew <1731>(5672) my <3450> power <1411> in <1722> thee <4671>, and <2532> that <3704> my <3450> name <3686> might be declared <1229>(5652) throughout <1722> all <3956> the earth <1093>.
18. Therefore <686> <3767> hath he mercy <1653>(5719) on whom <3739> he will <2309>(5719) have mercy, and <1161> whom <3739> he will <2309>(5719) he hardeneth <4645>(5719).
19. Thou wilt say <2046>(5692) then <3767> unto me <3427>, Why <5101> doth he yet <2089> find fault <3201>(5736)? For <1063> who <5101> hath resisted <436>(5758) his <846> will <1013>?
20. Nay but <3304>, O <5599> man <444>, who <5101> art <1488>(5748) thou <4771> that repliest against <470>(5740) God <2316>? <3361> Shall <2046> <0> the thing formed <4110> say <2046>(5692) to him that formed <4111>(5660) it, Why <5101> hast thou made <4160>(5656) me <3165> thus <3779>?
21. <2228> Hath <2192>(5719) not <3756> the potter <2763> power <1849> over the clay <4081>, of <1537> the same <846> lump <5445> to <3739> <3303> make <4160>(5658) one vessel <4632> unto <1519> honour <5092>, and <1161> another <3739> unto <1519> dishonour <819>?
22. What if <1487> <1161> God <2316>, willing <2309>(5723) to shew <1731>(5670) his wrath <3709>, and <2532> to make <1107> <0> his <848> power <1415> known <1107>(5658), endured <5342>(5656) with <1722> much <4183> longsuffering <3115> the vessels <4632> of wrath <3709> fitted <2675>(5772) to <1519> destruction <684>:
23. And <2532> that <2443> he might make known <1107>(5661) the riches <4149> of his <848> glory <1391> on <1909> the vessels <4632> of mercy <1656>, which <3739> he had afore prepared <4282>(5656) unto <1519> glory <1391>,
24. Even <2532> us <2248>, whom <3739> he hath called <2564>(5656), not <3756> <3739> of <1537> the Jews <2453> only <3440>, but <235> also <2532> of <1537> the Gentiles <1484>?
25. As he saith <3004>(5719) also <2532> in <1722> Osee <5617>, I will call <2564>(5692) them my <3450> people <2992>, which were not <3756> my <3450> people <2992>; and <2532> her beloved <25>(5772), which was <25> <0> not <3756> beloved <25>(5772).
26. And <2532> it shall come to pass <2071>(5704), that in <1722> the place <5117> where <3757> it was said <4483>(5681) unto them <846>, Ye <5210> are not <3756> my <3450> people <2992>; there <1563> shall they be called <2564>(5701) the children <5207> of the living <2198>(5723) God <2316>.
27. Esaias <2268> also <1161> crieth <2896>(5719) concerning <5228> Israel <2474>, Though <1437> the number <706> of the children <5207> of Israel <2474> be <5600>(5753) as <5613> the sand <285> of the sea <2281>, a remnant <2640> shall be saved <4982>(5701):
28. For <1063> he will finish <4931>(5723) the work <3056>, and <2532> cut it short <4932>(5723) in <1722> righteousness <1343>: because <3754> a short <4932>(5772) work <3056> will <4160> <0> the Lord <2962> make <4160>(5692) upon <1909> the earth <1093>.
29. And <2532> as <2531> Esaias <2268> said before <4280>(5758), Except <1508> the Lord <2962> of Sabaoth <4519> had left <1459>(5627) us <2254> a seed <4690>, we had been <302> <1096>(5675) as <5613> Sodoma <4670>, and <2532> been made like <302> <3666>(5681) unto <5613> Gomorrha <1116>.
30. What <5101> shall we say <2046>(5692) then <3767>? That <3754> the Gentiles <1484>, which <3588> followed <1377>(5723) not <3361> after righteousness <1343>, have attained <2638>(5627) to righteousness <1343>, even <1161> the righteousness <1343> which <3588> is of <1537> faith <4102>.
31. But <1161> Israel <2474>, which followed <1377>(5723) after the law <3551> of righteousness <1343>, hath <5348> <0> not <3756> attained <5348>(5656) to <1519> the law <3551> of righteousness <1343>.
32. Wherefore <1302>? Because <3754> they sought it not <3756> by <1537> faith <4102>, but <235> as <5613> it were by <1537> the works <2041> of the law <3551>. For <1063> they stumbled <4350>(5656) at that stumblingstone <3037> <4348>;
33. As <2531> it is written <1125>(5769), Behold <2400>(5628), I lay <5087>(5719) in <1722> Sion <4622> a stumblingstone <3037> <4348> and <2532> rock <4073> of offence <4625>: and <2532> whosoever <3956> believeth <4100>(5723) on <1909> him <846> shall <2617> <0> not <3756> be ashamed <2617>(5701).
