It is interesting that God waits until Elihu has prepared Job's mind for this onslaught (out of the whirlwind) before he presents it. God organises our lives the same way. We need to be prepared by circumstances - perhaps over years - before he might finally make a move on a particular issue. Let us be sure to remain open to God's changing of us.
Peter [UK] Comment added in 2002 Reply to Peter
Now Yahweh speaks to Job for the first time in the whole of the book.
He challenges Job about his understanding of His creation using similar language and ideas to those used by Elihu.
Peter Forbes [Mountsorrel (UK)] Comment added in 2001 Reply to Peter
In all our discussions about how God does things - such as the way that we try from time to time to explain the details of how the atonement works - we should be aware that we cannot answer the questions that Yahweh directed at Job. This should make us circumspect in the way that we speak about His works.
Peter Forbes [Mountsorrel (UK)] Comment added in 2002 Reply to Peter
38:1 God can speak 'out of' many different circumstances. He spoke to Elijah in a 'still small voice' (1 Kings 19:12). The 'whirlwind' was to highlight God's power to Job.
Peter Forbes [Mountsorrel (UK)] Comment added in 2003 Reply to Peter
God spoke to Job, not to the friends. The Lord brings the whole of His creative power in front of Job, and thereby increases His Own power in Job's eyes, and reduces Job down to the level of a created being.
David Simpson [Worcester (UK)] Comment added in 2004 Reply to David
Elihu's speech sensitised Job to the creative majesty of Yahweh. Now Yahweh speaks for Himself. Finally, Job has the meeting he wanted with the Yahweh (13:22-24). However, he does not get to ask specific questions about his condition or plead his innocence. Instead, he is compelled to listen to a perception check of the Almighty's position vis-à-vis that of man.
Michael Parry [Montreal (Can)] Comment added in 2005 Reply to Michael
Job is called into account in v.1-3, how often we don't know why God allows suffering
- Do we complain what God is doing to bring us closer to Him?
- The trials we often go through are not only for us, but those around us
- Trial is a forceful reminder of true values
Peter Dulis [toronto west] Comment added in 2005 Reply to Peter
Job 38 - 40: It's almost as if, in Ch 36 (from v27) and Ch 37, Elihu described to Job man's perspective of God's creative work - the way we humans can see and describe His mysteries of creation. However, when God speaks to Job from the storm and whirlwind, He is describing His work from the perspective of the Creator - something we as humans cannot possibly do. This brings Job back down to the level we all are in God's eyes - like an ant or even a grain of sand! Job is brought to realise that he could never come before God and ask the great Judge why he had been tormented in the way he had. In these chapters we get an insight into the mind of God and become humbled by His lovingkindness towards us, mere sinful mortals in His sight. But for the grace of God and His boundless forgiveness towards us through His Son, we would be as nothing. Oh, the awe and majesty and wonder of our Creator!

HUMBLED BY GOD
As God answered Job, he didn't directly answer the accusations and questions Job had put before him. Instead, like awesome waves of thunder and lightening that roll on and on, each boom and flash building on the last, the Lord revealed some of His glory to Job. God's answers to Job were a series of displays of His awesomeness and His strength.
Even though Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east, he was nothing compared to the God who created him. Throughout the discourses of Job, we can become quite impressed with how good, great, powerful, rich and wise the man Job was, but when God starts to speak, all of that falls away, and we find that Job, like ourselves, become just a small spot in the creation of God.
As we read through these last few chapters in Job, let's become aware of the awesomeness of God, and as a result let's be humbled before God like Job was. Then, in humility we can begin to serve him in a new way - because we love him, and we owe him our all. No longer will we think he needs us, but we can be honoured to serve the Living God.

ARE YOU READY?
"A day of the LORD is coming," we read. It will be a day like no other but it will symbolise the transition between the rule of the kingdom of men on the earth and the kingdom of God. It will be the defining point when the trend away from righteousness is reversed and evil is not tolerated any more. It will be the day when Jesus returns to reign as king over Israel and over the whole world. It will be the beginning of the time when all people will turn to one world religion and will go up to Jerusalem every year to worship the LORD. And it will be a time when God will directly intervene in world affairs to direct them in a right way. You will be affected by these changes. Will you submit to them or resist them? Are you prepared to turn your whole life around to become God centred or is this life too valuable to you? Those of us who give our lives to God now will take the change much easier. What about you? Are you ready?

1. In that day <3117> there shall be a fountain <4726> opened <6605>(8737) to the house <1004> of David <1732> and to the inhabitants <3427>(8802) of Jerusalem <3389> for sin <2403> and for uncleanness <5079>.
2. And it shall come to pass in that day <3117>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, that I will cut off <3772>(8686) the names <8034> of the idols <6091> out of the land <776>, and they shall no more be remembered <2142>(8735): and also I will cause the prophets <5030> and the unclean <2932> spirit <7307> to pass <5674>(8686) out of the land <776>.
3. And it shall come to pass, that when any <376> shall yet prophesy <5012>(8735), then his father <1> and his mother <517> that begat <3205>(8802) him shall say <559>(8804) unto him, Thou shalt not live <2421>(8799); for thou speakest <1696>(8765) lies <8267> in the name <8034> of the LORD <3068>: and his father <1> and his mother <517> that begat <3205>(8802) him shall thrust <1856>(8804) him through when he prophesieth <5012>(8736).
4. And it shall come to pass in that day <3117>, that the prophets <5030> shall be ashamed <954>(8799) every one <376> of his vision <2384>, when he hath prophesied <5012>(8736); neither shall they wear <3847>(8799) a rough <8181> garment <155> to deceive <3584>(8763):
5. But he shall say <559>(8804), I am no prophet <5030>, I am an husbandman <376> <5647>(8802) <127>; for man <120> taught me to keep cattle <7069>(8689) from my youth <5271>.
6. And one shall say <559>(8804) unto him, What are these wounds <4347> in thine hands <3027>? Then he shall answer <559>(8804), Those with which I was wounded <5221>(8717) in the house <1004> of my friends <157>(8764).
7. Awake <5782>(8798), O sword <2719>, against my shepherd <7462>(8802), and against the man <1397> that is my fellow <5997>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>: smite <5221>(8685) the shepherd <7462>(8802), and the sheep <6629> shall be scattered <6327>(8799): and I will turn <7725>(8689) mine hand <3027> upon the little ones <6819>(8802).
8. And it shall come to pass, that in all the land <776>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>, two <8147> parts <6310> therein shall be cut off <3772>(8735) and die <1478>(8799); but the third <7992> shall be left <3498>(8735) therein.
9. And I will bring <935>(8689) the third part <7992> through the fire <784>, and will refine <6884>(8804) them as silver <3701> is refined <6884>(8800), and will try <974>(8804) them as gold <2091> is tried <974>(8800): they shall call <7121>(8799) on my name <8034>, and I will hear <6030>(8799) them: I will say <559>(8804), It is my people <5971>: and they shall say <559>(8799), The LORD <3068> is my God <430>.
1. Behold, the day <3117> of the LORD <3068> cometh <935>(8804), and thy spoil <7998> shall be divided <2505>(8795) in the midst <7130> of thee.
2. For I will gather <622>(8804) all nations <1471> against Jerusalem <3389> to battle <4421>; and the city <5892> shall be taken <3920>(8738), and the houses <1004> rifled <8155>(8738), and the women <802> ravished <7901>(8735)(8675) <7693>(8735); and half <2677> of the city <5892> shall go forth <3318>(8804) into captivity <1473>, and the residue <3499> of the people <5971> shall not be cut off <3772>(8735) from the city <5892>.
3. Then shall the LORD <3068> go forth <3318>(8804), and fight <3898>(8738) against those nations <1471>, as when <3117> he fought <3898>(8736) in the day <3117> of battle <7128>.
4. And his feet <7272> shall stand <5975>(8804) in that day <3117> upon the mount <2022> of Olives <2132>, which is before <6440> Jerusalem <3389> on the east <6924>, and the mount <2022> of Olives <2132> shall cleave <1234>(8738) in the midst <2677> thereof toward the east <4217> and toward the west <3220>, and there shall be a very <3966> great <1419> valley <1516>; and half <2677> of the mountain <2022> shall remove <4185>(8804) toward the north <6828>, and half <2677> of it toward the south <5045>.
5. And ye shall flee <5127>(8804) to the valley <1516> of the mountains <2022>; for the valley <1516> of the mountains <2022> shall reach <5060>(8686) unto Azal <682>: yea, ye shall flee <5127>(8804), like as ye fled <5127>(8804) from before <6440> the earthquake <7494> in the days <3117> of Uzziah <5818> king <4428> of Judah <3063>: and the LORD <3068> my God <430> shall come <935>(8804), and all the saints <6918> with thee.
6. And it shall come to pass in that day <3117>, that the light <216> shall not be clear <3368>, nor dark <7087>(8675) <7087>(8799):
7. But it shall be one <259> day <3117> which shall be known <3045>(8735) to the LORD <3068>, not day <3117>, nor night <3915>: but it shall come to pass, that at evening <6153> time <6256> it shall be light <216>.
8. And it shall be in that day <3117>, that living <2416> waters <4325> shall go out <3318>(8799) from Jerusalem <3389>; half <2677> of them toward the former <6931> sea <3220>, and half <2677> of them toward the hinder <314> sea <3220>: in summer <7019> and in winter <2779> shall it be.
9. And the LORD <3068> shall be king <4428> over all the earth <776>: in that day <3117> shall there be one <259> LORD <3068>, and his name <8034> one <259>.
10. All the land <776> shall be turned <5437>(8735) as a plain <6160> from Geba <1387> to Rimmon <7417> south <5045> of Jerusalem <3389>: and it shall be lifted up <7213>(8804), and inhabited <3427>(8804) in her place, from Benjamin's <1144> gate <8179> unto the place <4725> of the first <7223> gate <8179>, unto the corner <6434> gate <8179>, and from the tower <4026> of Hananeel <2606> unto the king's <4428> winepresses <3342>.
11. And men shall dwell <3427>(8804) in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction <2764>; but Jerusalem <3389> shall be safely <983> inhabited <3427>(8804).
12. And this shall be the plague <4046> wherewith the LORD <3068> will smite <5062>(8799) all the people <5971> that have fought <6633>(8804) against Jerusalem <3389>; Their flesh <1320> shall consume away <4743>(8687) while they stand <5975>(8802) upon their feet <7272>, and their eyes <5869> shall consume away <4743>(8735) in their holes <2356>, and their tongue <3956> shall consume away <4743>(8735) in their mouth <6310>.
13. And it shall come to pass in that day <3117>, that a great <7227> tumult <4103> from the LORD <3068> shall be among them; and they shall lay hold <2388>(8689) every one <376> on the hand <3027> of his neighbour <7453>, and his hand <3027> shall rise up <5927>(8804) against the hand <3027> of his neighbour <7453>.
14. And Judah <3063> also shall fight <3898>(8735) at Jerusalem <3389>; and the wealth <2428> of all the heathen <1471> round about <5439> shall be gathered together <622>(8795), gold <2091>, and silver <3701>, and apparel <899>, in great <3966> abundance <7230>.
15. And so shall be the plague <4046> of the horse <5483>, of the mule <6505>, of the camel <1581>, and of the ass <2543>, and of all the beasts <929> that shall be in these <1992> tents <4264>, as this plague <4046>.
16. And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left <3498>(8737) of all the nations <1471> which came <935>(8802) against Jerusalem <3389> shall even go up <5927>(8804) from <1767> year <8141> to year <8141> to worship <7812>(8692) the King <4428>, the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, and to keep <2287>(8800) the feast <2282> of tabernacles <5521>.
17. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up <5927>(8799) of all the families <4940> of the earth <776> unto Jerusalem <3389> to worship <7812>(8692) the King <4428>, the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, even upon them shall be no rain <1653>.
18. And if the family <4940> of Egypt <4714> go not up <5927>(8799), and come <935>(8804) not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague <4046>, wherewith the LORD <3068> will smite <5062>(8799) the heathen <1471> that come not up <5927>(8799) to keep <2287>(8800) the feast <2282> of tabernacles <5521>.
19. This shall be the punishment <2403> of Egypt <4714>, and the punishment <2403> of all nations <1471> that come not up <5927>(8799) to keep <2287>(8800) the feast <2282> of tabernacles <5521>.
20. In that day <3117> shall there be upon the bells <4698> of the horses <5483>, HOLINESS <6944> UNTO THE LORD <3068>; and the pots <5518> in the LORD'S <3068> house <1004> shall be like the bowls <4219> before <6440> the altar <4196>.
21. Yea, every pot <5518> in Jerusalem <3389> and in Judah <3063> shall be holiness <6944> unto the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>: and all they that sacrifice <2076>(8802) shall come <935>(8804) and take <3947>(8804) of them, and seethe <1310>(8765) therein: and in that day <3117> there shall be no more the Canaanite <3669> in the house <1004> of the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>.

1. And <2532> I saw <1492>(5627) another <243> sign <4592> in <1722> heaven <3772>, great <3173> and <2532> marvellous <2298>, seven <2033> angels <32> having <2192>(5723) the seven <2033> last <2078> plagues <4127>; for <3754> in <1722> them <846> is filled up <5055>(5681) the wrath <2372> of God <2316>.
2. And <2532> I saw <1492>(5627) as it were <5613> a sea <2281> of glass <5193> mingled <3396>(5772) with fire <4442>: and <2532> them that had gotten the victory <3528>(5723) over <1537> the beast <2342>, and <2532> over <1537> his <846> image <1504>, and <2532> over <1537> his <846> mark <5480>, and over <1537> the number <706> of his <846> name <3686>, stand <2476>(5761) on <1909> the sea <2281> of glass <5193>, having <2192>(5723) the harps <2788> of God <2316>.
3. And <2532> they sing <103>(5719) the song <5603> of Moses <3475> the servant <1401> of God <2316>, and <2532> the song <5603> of the Lamb <721>, saying <3004>(5723), Great <3173> and <2532> marvellous <2298> are thy <4675> works <2041>, Lord <2962> God <2316> Almighty <3841>; just <1342> and <2532> true <228> are thy <4675> ways <3598>, thou King <935> of saints <40>.
4. Who <5101> shall <5399> <0> not <3364> fear <5399>(5680) thee <4571>, O Lord <2962>, and <2532> glorify <1392>(5661) thy <4675> name <3686>? for <3754> thou only <3441> art holy <3741>: for <3754> all <3956> nations <1484> shall come <2240>(5692) and <2532> worship <4352>(5692) before <1799> thee <4675>; for <3754> thy <4675> judgments <1345> are made manifest <5319>(5681).
5. And <2532> after <3326> that <5023> I looked <1492>(5627), and <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), the temple <3485> of the tabernacle <4633> of the testimony <3142> in <1722> heaven <3772> was opened <455>(5648):
6. And <2532> the seven <2033> angels <32> came <1831>(5627) out of <1537> the temple <3485>, having <2192>(5723) the seven <2033> plagues <4127>, clothed <1746>(5765) in pure <2513> and <2532> white <2986> linen <3043>, and <2532> having their breasts <4738> girded <4024>(5772) with <4012> golden <5552> girdles <2223>.
7. And <2532> one <1520> of <1537> the four <5064> beasts <2226> gave <1325>(5656) unto the seven <2033> angels <32> seven <2033> golden <5552> vials <5357> full <1073>(5723) of the wrath <2372> of God <2316>, who <3588> liveth <2198>(5723) for <1519> ever <165> and ever <165>.
8. And <2532> the temple <3485> was filled <1072>(5681) with smoke <2586> from <1537> the glory <1391> of God <2316>, and <2532> from <1537> his <846> power <1411>; and <2532> no man <3762> was able <1410>(5711) to enter <1525>(5629) into <1519> the temple <3485>, till <891> the seven <2033> plagues <4127> of the seven <2033> angels <32> were fulfilled <5055>(5686).
1. And <2532> I heard <191>(5656) a great <3173> voice <5456> out of <1537> the temple <3485> saying <3004>(5723) to the seven <2033> angels <32>, Go your ways <5217>(5720), and <2532> pour out <1632>(5657) the vials <5357> of the wrath <2372> of God <2316> upon <1519> the earth <1093>.
2. And <2532> the first <4413> went <565>(5627), and <2532> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1909> the earth <1093>; and <2532> there fell <1096>(5633) a noisome <2556> and <2532> grievous <4190> sore <1668> upon <1519> the men <444> which <3588> had <2192>(5723) the mark <5480> of the beast <2342>, and <2532> upon them which worshipped <4352>(5723) his <846> image <1504>.
3. And <2532> the second <1208> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1519> the sea <2281>; and <2532> it became <1096>(5633) as <5613> the blood <129> of a dead <3498> man: and <2532> every <3956> living <2198>(5723) soul <5590> died <599>(5627) in <1722> the sea <2281>.
4. And <2532> the third <5154> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1519> the rivers <4215> and <2532> <1519> fountains <4077> of waters <5204>; and <2532> they became <1096>(5633) blood <129>.
5. And <2532> I heard <191>(5656) the angel <32> of the waters <5204> say <3004>(5723), Thou art <1488>(5748) righteous <1342>, O Lord <2962>, which <3588> art <3801>, and <2532> wast <2258>(5713)(5625) <3801>, and <2532> shalt be <3741>(5706)(5625) <3801>, because <3754> thou hast judged <2919>(5656) thus <5023>.
6. For <3754> they have shed <1632>(5656) the blood <129> of saints <40> and <2532> prophets <4396>, and <2532> thou hast given <1325>(5656) them <846> blood <129> to drink <4095>(5629); for <1063> they are <1526>(5748) worthy <514>.
7. And <2532> I heard <191>(5656) another <243> out of <1537> the altar <2379> say <3004>(5723), Even so <3483>, Lord <2962> God <2316> Almighty <3841>, true <228> and <2532> righteous <1342> are thy <4675> judgments <2920>.
8. And <2532> the fourth <5067> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1909> the sun <2246>; and <2532> power was given <1325>(5681) unto him <846> to scorch <2739>(5658) men <444> with <1722> fire <4442>.
9. And <2532> men <444> were scorched <2739>(5681) with great <3173> heat <2738>, and <2532> blasphemed <987>(5656) the name <3686> of God <2316>, which <3588> hath <2192>(5723) power <1849> over <1909> these <5025> plagues <4127>: and <2532> they repented <3340>(5656) not <3756> to give <1325>(5629) him <846> glory <1391>.
10. And <2532> the fifth <3991> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1909> the seat <2362> of the beast <2342>; and <2532> his <846> kingdom <932> was <1096>(5633) full of darkness <4656>(5772); and <2532> they gnawed <3145>(5711) their <848> tongues <1100> for <1537> pain <4192>,
11. And <2532> blasphemed <987>(5656) the God <2316> of heaven <3772> because of <1537> their <848> pains <4192> and <2532> <1537> their <848> sores <1668>, and <2532> repented <3340>(5656) not <3756> of <1537> their <848> deeds <2041>.
12. And <2532> the sixth <1623> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> upon <1909> the great <3173> river <4215> Euphrates <2166>; and <2532> the water <5204> thereof <846> was dried up <3583>(5681), that <2443> the way <3598> of the kings <935> of <575> the east <395> <2246> might be prepared <2090>(5686).
13. And <2532> I saw <1492>(5627) three <5140> unclean <169> spirits <4151> like <3664> frogs <944> come out of <1537> the mouth <4750> of the dragon <1404>, and <2532> out of <1537> the mouth <4750> of the beast <2342>, and <2532> out of <1537> the mouth <4750> of the false prophet <5578>.
14. For <1063> they are <1526>(5748) the spirits <4151> of devils <1142>, working <4160>(5723) miracles <4592>, which go forth <1607>(5738)(5625) <1607>(5736) unto <1909> the kings <935> of the earth <1093> and <2532> of the whole <3650> world <3625>, to gather <4863>(5629) them <846> to <1519> the battle <4171> of that <1565> great <3173> day <2250> of God <2316> Almighty <3841>.
15. Behold <2400>(5628), I come <2064>(5736) as <5613> a thief <2812>. Blessed <3107> is he that watcheth <1127>(5723), and <2532> keepeth <5083>(5723) his <848> garments <2440>, lest <3363> he walk <4043>(5725) naked <1131>, and <2532> they see <991>(5725) his <846> shame <808>.
16. And <2532> he gathered <4863> <0> them <846> together <4863>(5627) into <1519> a place <5117> called <2564>(5746) in the Hebrew tongue <1447> Armageddon <717>.
17. And <2532> the seventh <1442> angel <32> poured out <1632>(5656) his <848> vial <5357> into <1519> the air <109>; and <2532> there came <1831>(5627) a great <3173> voice <5456> out of <575> the temple <3485> of heaven <3772>, from <575> the throne <2362>, saying <3004>(5723), It is done <1096>(5754).
18. And <2532> there were <1096>(5633) voices <5456>, and <2532> thunders <1027>, and <2532> lightnings <796>; and <2532> there was <1096>(5633) a great <3173> earthquake <4578>, such as <3634> was <1096>(5633) not <3756> since <3739> <575> men <444> were <1096>(5633) upon <1909> the earth <1093>, so mighty <5082> an earthquake <4578>, and so <3779> great <3173>.
19. And <2532> the great <3173> city <4172> was divided <1096>(5633) into <1519> three <5140> parts <3313>, and <2532> the cities <4172> of the nations <1484> fell <4098>(5627): and <2532> great <3173> Babylon <897> came in remembrance <3415>(5681) before <1799> God <2316>, to give <1325>(5629) unto her <846> the cup <4221> of the wine <3631> of the fierceness <2372> of his <848> wrath <3709>.
20. And <2532> every <3956> island <3520> fled away <5343>(5627), and <2532> the mountains <3735> were <2147> <0> not <3756> found <2147>(5681).
21. And <2532> there fell <2597>(5719) upon <1909> men <444> a great <3173> hail <5464> out of <1537> heaven <3772>, every stone about <5613> the weight of a talent <5006>: and <2532> men <444> blasphemed <987>(5656) God <2316> because of <1537> the plague <4127> of the hail <5464>; for <3754> the plague <4127> thereof <846> was <2076>(5748) exceeding <4970> great <3173>.
